DEH fanboys and girls, those who have or haven't yet seen the show, and those who don't care about musicals at all -- this book will satisfy them all. NO SPOILERS in this review, just a rundown of what I loved and didn't love.I'm a person who can't tolerate sloppy or clichéd prose, and YA literature is rife with it. This book is a happy exception. It's very well written and briskly plotted, with well-drawn characters I could easily picture in my own mind. The high-quality writing is the best part of the book, and in my opinion the most important part of any fiction book.Evan Hansen, the protagonist, is a bundle of neuroses, self-doubt, and self-loathing. For me, that got tiring after a bit, but I'm no longer a teenager. It might be that if I were 16 or 17 I'd feel a lot more empathy. Even so, Evan is likable enough to sympathize with, despite his many incredibly obvious blunders and history of awful decision-making. The ancillary characters are all vivid and well fleshed out, mostly representing high school "types" we all know well. I did feel that, in terms of character development, the adults are more sketched-out than thoroughly explored. I think this is true to the teenage mind, though, which conceives of adults as somewhat mysterious and capricious, and EH is a teen speaking in the first person, so it's appropriate.I haven't seen the show or heard the cast album, but after reading the book, I looked up the plot of the show. It appears that there is an important character added in this book that helps flesh out Connor's story. And Connor's story is left somewhat ambiguous; we're teased with a was-he-or-wasn't-he question that's never answered. That left me a little frustrated, because it felt a bit like the writer backed off a potentially controversial character trait by leaving it open. But that's a minor flaw. Overall, I was very surprised at how much I, a grown adult with no particular interest in YA fiction, enjoyed the writing, the characters, and the experience of reading the book.FOR PARENTS -- no spoilers of plot, but a couple notes on content, so don't read on if you don't want to know any more.There is a suicide in the book. It's not described and there's nothing graphic, but the aftermath reverberates throughout the story. So this may not be a great book for younger kids struggling with self-harm and depression. There is also a relentless emphasis on Evan's mental health struggles. If your child suffers from panic, social anxiety, or depression, I'd suggest you read the book yourself and decide whether your kid will feel empathy and relief at reading about others fighting the same battles, or whether the content might trigger more morbid feelings.

I don't know what I can say about this - I am in absolute love with the novel. I have not seen the play, and only listened to the soundtrack after reading the book (I didn't want any spoilers). For those saying that they could not get hooked and had to actually close the book - I'm really not sure if you're reading it properly. The book goes into such great depths to personalize each of the characters that you feel like you're transported into the book and you're a classmate with Evan, or at times, actually him. Feeling what he's feeling, going with the emotions (the good, the bad, and the ugly).The book takes you on a journey that revolves around a lie (yes, a big one), and continues to build up until it reaches its breaking point. I had been waiting for what I dubbed "the drop" from when the lie was first spewed. And I kept reading with interest with where the story was going to go next...was it going to be found? Towards the end of the novel, that's where I let loose of all my emotions while reading...I released all of my emotions the same time Evan did. I wiped away tears from my eyes as I tried to read the last few chapters and as it all came to an end.What I will say is to make sure you read the "Epilogue" as well. There are a lot of loose ends that are tied that there helps put each of the character's - Evan, Jared, Zoe, the Murphys, etc. - stories to a complete close.If I could rate this more than five stars, I would. I would, without a shadow of a doubt, definitely recommend this to anyone that has been struggling or has struggled with mental health, feeling connected with anyone, or that just wants to read an amazing story for the fall (or any time of year).Don't trust in the negative reviews.

I'm so glad I got this book. I hesitated, as I love the show and got to see it in NYC, but it's a wonderful addition to the musical. It also stands on its own as a good story. There's a lot more backstory about Connor especially that adds to the experience and explains his motives.I know the play was based on a real story (with changes). I really enjoyed here how the lyrics for songs were brought in seamlessly (though I think I was singing them in my head).It's a really inspirational story. Since seeing the play, I've wished that it was more available, and this is a great way to spread it. My daughter, in the 7th grade, recommended this book to me. It is such a beautiful book, and it lead to some great talks with my daughter. I feel that any adolescent would enjoy and benefit from this book (and any parent for that matter.) The author makes you genuinely care about the characters. When you know you're going to miss the characters when you reach the end of the book, the author has done an incredible job.

I wish the descriptions for the books has a section where the order of the books was listed. I would like to know which books are apart of the series or are standalone especially if new characters are being added that will continue with the main characters at some point. Before this I read the witches and wolves one with just Quin and Toya. I still feel that book was way too short and rushed. Now reading this book I see why certain scenes were rushed but I wished you would have just cut and pasted some scenes from this book to that book to make it make sense. Now that we know who Kya is the end of the witches and wolves book makes sense and I got the fight scene I felt deprived of from witches and wolves. With that said this book had way less grammatical errors than the other books which I found strange since the witches and wolves book was shorter. Anyhow I enjoyed reading the scenes with Khalil and Kya. Since the school they went to was for supernatural kids I am curious about Elaine and if she will make a reappearance. Also am wondering if there is more regarding Kya’s parents as some of the Dialogue used was in present tense. Love the continued growth of Michael and Taria. Curious of how badass Toya will be once she drops the load.

Kya is developing powers she didn’t know she had and is being sucked into a world she didn’t know existed. I love how this latest installment of this series. Taria is still developing powers and I love how her and Nya connect!

I felt like the story was there. Just no real fulfilling information or substance for me to really invest in this book. It felt rushed, half baked and I only finished it because I really have a passion for this type of art and African American paranormal and I really hope you take the criticism for the second half. The characters were developed ok. I wish there was more back ground as far as who Quinn and Toya were. Out the gate we hear about a missing couple but there was no mention as to how they met Taria, their importance to the story line or anything. No back ground on Michael at all nor his relationship with Taria. Kyas parents were never mentioned again nor could I give an honest answer as to why Apu or Amu wanted Kya in the first place. Reading this I felt like I was reading a part two and was missing a lot. I’m also usually not one to harp on grammar but the simple grammatical mistakes made were so annoying to read no one could have possibly reread or at the very least spell checked this. I almost stopped reading because of those alone. If you don’t take pride in your work it won’t be appreciated. I’m not trying to be harsh and I liked the story line. I just feel like this could have been executed 10 times better had you slowed down and filled in some things here and there. I’ve read hundreds of books that i felt were bad or just plain stupid and poorly written and didn’t bother to comment. I feel like your a good story teller and author and I wanted you to see my thoughts so the next story can be great like i know it can be.

There was so much premise to this being a great book, but there was no flow to the story, no back story for the characters. What little there was made no sense. There was barely any emotions when the baby had to be given away as soon as the mother had it.Just a bunch of sentences in a paragraph, sometimes without the necessary punctuation to complete a thought before jumping to another one or an action that just sprung up out of nowhere. I couldn't understand what the heck was going on or why, basically. I'm sorry, I tried. Couldn't read it and I'm an easy reader.

Those knitters who love this book are inspired by the really creative yarn combinations - let's face it there are only so many bag shapes and as for textures? In felting, they all tend to look alike once felted. So what makes a bag "creative" is the color changing, the novelty yarns, the closures and other doodads once the bag is finished. This book is loaded with creativity - I've made all the bags and all but one was great fun. All the bags look great, even those that didn't turn out like the pictures. However, I don't think it's the best book for the new felter. The basic instructions are fine to get the bag felted (especially if you use Cascade 220 which is a 'can't miss' felting yarn.) Even so, the felting process relies on so many factors - water temperature, whether you use a spin cycle, your own knitting tension and also the fact that real mistakes can happen unless you have some felting expertise under your belt. For example, some colors can bleed if you try and change the color palette, the felt can get permanently wrinkled on the bigger bags unless you do a lot of checking - and not all washers are good for felting, etc.Those of us looking for inspiration and ways to expand our bag repertoire love this book as an addition to our library. The grommets, handles, and novelties are useful even if you expect never to felt a bag again.That said, those looking for a first time felting bag book should start with a book such as "Knit One, Felt Too : Discover the magic of knitted felt with 25 easy patterns"

This is a very good book. I have made four of the purses and they are beautiful. I will make two or three others. Although I know how to knit, I am new to felting. The "knitting basics" section is quite good and easy to understand. The abbreviations list is also very helpful. However, some of the pattern instructions could be a little clearer. For example: The flap instructions for the Spring Fling Bag found on page 19 begin with "with RS facing . . ." I know RS means right side but should you pick the stitches up with the front of the bag facing you, or the back? This affects the "ridge" on the top of the flap. I still don't know the answer to this and have made two of these bags. I bought this book after borrowing this from a friend. My first project was the vintage hobo bag on page 16. Not only is it easy to knit, the bag is beautiful!!! We started circulating this pattern amongst our friends and now we are truly addicted. What I love most about this book aside from the patterns is that the author gives clear instructions on the actual felting. She also writes clear instructions on making flaps, buttonholes, i-cords and other details that assist the novice knitters.I highly recommend this book to others.

After making more than 20 felted bags, I consider myself a felting veteran, but I was blown away by the fantastic patterns found in Pursenalities. The patterns are clear, the results are amazing (I really wasn't sure I could do that with yarn until I tried, but the finishing touches on the bags (the zipper pulls and grommets) is where these patterns stand out. I thought I was tired of making felted bags until I bought this book. Now I am ready to keep on knitting!

After looking thru the book, I found many purses I now can't live without! They are cute and some trendy, some more classic..a perfect mix. Can't wait to start!

I wish the yarns used were more accessible to those not fortunate enough to have a yarn shop in the area and have to depend on the chain stores like Michael's that have a very limited selection or mail order which can be pricy. I know substitutions can be made but the yarns have to be researched and I guess the projects haven't inspired the effort, bar one or two. But the instructions are well writted and the pics are clear. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Am still a beginner when it comes to felting and it is nice that the directions are clearly written. Fun

He finally argues that Christian- Judaeo religion tells us that disregard for the well being of others is immoral. This is wrong in the context he presents the argument. The author is saying it is immoral for The State (group) to ignore the well being of others. Christianity never tells the State to act on behalf of the well being of anyone. Only the individual is encouraged to act to help others. It is an outright lie to say Christianity tells the State to act on behalf of the well being of others.He finally rejects the concept of the importance of the individual by saying the individual is his own worst enemy, thus, the idea of the individual being greater than the State must die.The majority of the book is taken up with how to organize people to influence the government, and he is prone to encourage lying whenever necessary to achieve the murky goals of justice, morality, and order. In fact, the goal is communism by any means necessary including outright violence. He uses techniques taught by Linin and the communist international movement.Thus, the book is a lie from the start because it attempts to hide its true goals through misdirection of language. His real purpose lines up perfectly with communist teachings since the publication of the Communist Manifesto. The results of communism are clear for anyone to see. Millions upon millions killed in the name of "progress."In fact, the idea that the individual is greater than the state is the only political ideal that has ever brought freedom to anyone. Every other path leads to tyranny and murder on a vast scale.AD2

Alinsky himself is commonly considered a radical leftist, and his detractors consider him and many of the principles outlined in his book as unethical or hypocritical. However, the truth behind these now commonly accepted generalizations is a bit more nuanced.First of all, Alinsky himself seems clear from the outset that he does not advocate for any particular ideology, and in fact says that he detests and fears dogma. And truly, the precepts outlined in this book could be used by almost any movement that believes it can put “people power” to work. These are not just rules for “radicals” as the title suggests. In fact, the passage of time has rendered this title almost obsolete, as the very term “radical” no longer means what it once did. One only needs to read Alinsky to see how different it has become over the last 50 years. It is truly a propaganda victory for radicals that most seem to consider anything good for the masses as an inherently “radical” cause.When compared to the schemes, misinformation, and antics of today’s better known political figures, Alinsky reads like a veritable patriot in many places. When compared with many of today’s most prominent activists, he can sometimes sound almost like a voice of reason. Much of the book is given over to the central issues of effective human communication and organizing. In these respects, it is eminently rational. Consider the following from the Preface:“…there are certain central concepts of action in human politics that operate regardless of the scene or the time…[that] …make the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one who uses the tired old words and slogans, calls the police “pig” or “white fascist racist” or “motherf$%er.”…“Even the most elementary grasp of the fundamental idea that one communicates within the experience of his audience—and gives full respect to the other’s values—would have ruled out attacks on the American flag. The responsible organizer would have known that it is the establishment that has betrayed the flag while the flag, itself, remains the glorious symbol of America’s hopes and aspirations…”Most of Alinsky’s detractors label him a moral relativist and claim he is unethical probably because of his position that the ends can always justify the means. In his own words: "This grasp of the duality of all phenomena is vital in our understanding politics. It frees one from the myth that one approach is positive and another negative. There is no such thing in life. One man's positive is another man's negative. The description of any procedure as "positive" or "negative" is the mark of a political illiterate." Chapter 2, “Of Means and Ends” gets into this issue in exquisite detail. Here Alinsky has included as illustrative of his views an interesting narrative about Mahatma Gandhi, and although some readers will not agree and may label it “rationalization,” it is a very realistic and persuasive discussion.Chapter 5, “Communication,” contains some of the most important ideas in the book. One of the most important principles (alluded to above) is that “people only understand things in terms of their experience. When you can’t find the point in the others experience at which he can receive and understand, you must create the experience for him.”In Chapter 7, “Tactics,” the reader will find the actual list of “rules” that the title alludes to. Strangely, I doubt that most readers will find these rules particularly controversial or immoral.It is hard to tell whether Chapter 8, “The Genesis of Tactic Proxy,” is wrong or is merely poorly stated. Alinsky seems to suggest that all tactics are “accidental” or “response to reaction,” i.e., unplanned. What he may want to convey is the idea that some scenarios play out in unexpected ways, and one must take an opportunistic approach when a good moment presents itself.In the final chapter, “The Way Ahead,” Alinsky makes an interesting observation that seems eerily relevant to the 2016 election cycle. He opines that even if all low income parts of the population were organized, they would still not be powerful enough to drive significant, basic, needed changes, and that they would need allies. He believes organizing the lower middle class is the obvious answer. He goes on to describe what he sees as their typical values (and it is somewhat depressing to realize how little has changed in the time since this was written). These are the so-called “deplorables” that were left behind and ended up swinging the 2016 election.Regardless of political tendencies and what one may have read or heard about Saul Alinsky, this book is worth a read provided that it is read with a critical eye and a challenging attitude. Dr Hollis covers the passage into the middle years, the second adulthood, so throughly and completely it is a wonder this isn't standard reading for all adults! This may be a small book (certainly smaller and more concise than his similar and later work Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life: How to Finally, Really Grow Up) but it covers the topic so well. It seems especially recommendable to people interested in depth psychology and finding a map to navigate this critical and challenging passage.What I especially enjoy about Hollis is the literate sensibility he brings to his writing (often utilizing appropriate references from literature both old and modern), combined with his wise and welcoming experience of being human (every stage and experience has its place and value.... It's all good when we find it's meaning, and the struggle and suffering make it all the more recognizable and significant. The real problem is our modern culture is lacking in clear guidelines, maps and support from wise elders.... The challenging part is it's up to us here and now to create these essential functions.)This book covers an overview of the four stages/identities humans experience in a complete life (childhood and adolescence, which lead to the second adulthood beginning at midlife, leading to acceptance of mortality in old age). It clearly points out how the first half is about establishing our egos, and fitting in to expectations, while the second is about finding our individual voice and real meaning (the resolutions of often long buried questions). As Hollis says, "if we are fortunate to suffer enough, we are stunned into a reluctant consciousness and the questions return to us again." (Pg 19) I could quote so much more to give a taste of his gentle wisdom, but I will share just one more."During the Middle Passage, the insurgence of the shadow is part of a corrective effort made by the Self to bring the personality back into balance. The key to integration of the shadow, the unlived life, is to understand that it's demands emanate from the Self, which wishes neither further repression nor unlicensed acting out. The integration of the shadow requires that we live responsibly in society but also more honestly with ourselves. We learn through the deflation of the persona world that we have lived provisionally; the integration of inner truths, joyful or unpleasant, is necessary to bring new life and restoration of purpose." The eruptions that occur for most of us in midlife are troubling and bewildering: loss of an established identity, depression, boredom, anxiety, perhaps even addiction, and the overwhelming feeling that something is dying and something else needs to be reborn. For some these seismic shifts break out in the stereotypical displays of the midlife crisis (jettisoning relationships and careers, for example) while others stew in quiet desperation and perhaps seek therapy or simply hope the disturbing rumblings will pass. In the author's words, "Anyone in midlife has witnessed the collapsing of projections, of hopes and expectations, and has experienced the limitations of talent, intelligence, and, often, of courage itself."James Hollis, a Jungian therapist with decades of experience as an analyst and teacher, has written this remarkable book which is the best I have seen at elucidating what the midlife passage means and the creative response it demands.Approaching the topic from the rich, poetic, and mystical perspective of depth psychology, Hollis maintains that our second lives call for nothing less than a renegotiation with the universe. In the first part of life, the ego is in charge and has projected unrealistic demands upon people, jobs, institutions and other aspects of the outer world. In the second half of life, Hollis maintains that these projections must be withdrawn and that we must undergo a new, inner journey based on what the soul demands. While this may at first sound theoretical and impractical, in fact Hollis describes aspects of what such an odyssey would entail as it relates to relationships, vocation, and other aspects of living. Hollis says that we already have everything we need to make this journey, however fraught with fear it can be. It's already inside us. I think you will come away convinced.At only 117 pages, concentrated and learned--but not pedantic--almost every paragraph has a sentence that can be pondered, underlined, and returned to. I expect to do this many times.As frightening as the midlife passage can be, Hollis gives us hope. He writes, "We are in the sea-surge of the soul, along with many others to be sure, but needing to swim under our own power. The truth is simply that what we must know will come from within. If we can align our lives with that truth, no matter how difficult the abrasions of the world, we will feel healing, hope, and new life."If you have entered the dark wood of midlife--as Dante referred to it--you will find this book to be an immensely rewarding companion that offers not a way out, but a description of a path through that will be uniquely your own.
