About the Author
MONICA KULLING is a poet who has published over forty books for children, including picture books, adaptations of classic novels, and biographies. Known for introducing biography for children who are just learning to read, she has written about Harriet Tubman, Henry Ford, Houdini, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Amelia Earhart, among others. Her award-winning Great Idea Series features biographies of inventors and their captivating inventions. She is also the author of Merci Mister Dash! and Mister Dash and the Cupcake Calamity. Another excellent entry in this series which introduces children to some unique inventions and their inventors. The invention of the Zamboni by Frank Zamboni is discussed here with interest. A brief biography of his life from birth, the importance of his brothers in his life as they worked together in the ice business, then electrical, and how Frank came up with the idea to invent a machine that would do the job of maintaining the skating rink ice which was taking 90 minutes manually. Kulling never talks down to her audience in this series and presents colourful and interesting subjects and unique inventions. This book, as well as others in the series, is appealing to an adult as well as the intended picturebook juvenile audience: always the sign of a well-written children's book. I love Benoit's illustrations as well. They have a clear 1930s/40s look to them giving a distinct atmosphere to the story's historical setting. Another winner in the "Great Ideas" series.
Summary: Anyone who’s ever gone ice skating, or watched a sports event that took place on ice, has observed the giant Zamboni machine that drives around the rink and quickly resurfaces the ice. But 70 years ago, there was no machine, and it took several men 90 minutes or more for that resurfacing. And for Frank Zamboni, owner of the Iceland rink in California, that was too many man hours. Fortunately, Frank was a tinkerer who knew a lot about machinery. He had come up with an innovative way to design Iceland that resulted in smoother ice than other rinks. Busy with his family, shut down from working on his machine by World War II, he worked on his machine for nine years. Many people said what he was trying to do was impossible, but her persevered, and in 1949, his machine took to the ice, and did in minutes what had previously taken over an hour. Frank named his new machine after himself, and today, Zamboni machines are on every continent…except the ice-covered continent of Antarctica. 32 pages; grades K-3Pros: The story of an ordinary man who saw a problem, persevered, and succeeded in solving it. This would be a great book to include in a unit on inventors and inventions.Cons: The poem at the beginning about ice skating is cute but seems sort of unnecessary.
Clean Sweep is truly a great book... It's well written and engaging for children aged 5-10, or frankly anyone curious about the history of such a cool machine! It's chock-full of amusing and interesting anecdotes and it definitely kept my students' attention!I received this book in exchange for my honest review...
