Those knitters who love this book are inspired by the really creative yarn combinations - let's face it there are only so many bag shapes and as for textures? In felting, they all tend to look alike once felted. So what makes a bag "creative" is the color changing, the novelty yarns, the closures and other doodads once the bag is finished. This book is loaded with creativity - I've made all the bags and all but one was great fun. All the bags look great, even those that didn't turn out like the pictures. However, I don't think it's the best book for the new felter. The basic instructions are fine to get the bag felted (especially if you use Cascade 220 which is a 'can't miss' felting yarn.) Even so, the felting process relies on so many factors - water temperature, whether you use a spin cycle, your own knitting tension and also the fact that real mistakes can happen unless you have some felting expertise under your belt. For example, some colors can bleed if you try and change the color palette, the felt can get permanently wrinkled on the bigger bags unless you do a lot of checking - and not all washers are good for felting, etc.Those of us looking for inspiration and ways to expand our bag repertoire love this book as an addition to our library. The grommets, handles, and novelties are useful even if you expect never to felt a bag again.That said, those looking for a first time felting bag book should start with a book such as "Knit One, Felt Too : Discover the magic of knitted felt with 25 easy patterns"
This is a very good book. I have made four of the purses and they are beautiful. I will make two or three others. Although I know how to knit, I am new to felting. The "knitting basics" section is quite good and easy to understand. The abbreviations list is also very helpful. However, some of the pattern instructions could be a little clearer. For example: The flap instructions for the Spring Fling Bag found on page 19 begin with "with RS facing . . ." I know RS means right side but should you pick the stitches up with the front of the bag facing you, or the back? This affects the "ridge" on the top of the flap. I still don't know the answer to this and have made two of these bags. Would also appreciate listing some substitute yarns --- especially the fantasy/decorative yarns. I bought this book after borrowing this from a friend. My first project was the vintage hobo bag on page 16. Not only is it easy to knit, the bag is beautiful!!! We started circulating this pattern amongst our friends and now we are truly addicted. What I love most about this book aside from the patterns is that the author gives clear instructions on the actual felting. She also writes clear instructions on making flaps, buttonholes, i-cords and other details that assist the novice knitters.I highly recommend this book to others.
After making more than 20 felted bags, I consider myself a felting veteran, but I was blown away by the fantastic patterns found in Pursenalities. The patterns are clear, the results are amazing (I really wasn't sure I could do that with yarn until I tried, but the finishing touches on the bags (the zipper pulls and grommets) is where these patterns stand out. I thought I was tired of making felted bags until I bought this book. Now I am ready to keep on knitting!
After looking thru the book, I found many purses I now can't live without! They are cute and some trendy, some more classic..a perfect mix. Can't wait to start!
I wish the yarns used were more accessible to those not fortunate enough to have a yarn shop in the area and have to depend on the chain stores like Michael's that have a very limited selection or mail order which can be pricy. I know substitutions can be made but the yarns have to be researched and I guess the projects haven't inspired the effort, bar one or two. But the instructions are well writted and the pics are clear. I guess it's just a matter of taste.
Am still a beginner when it comes to felting and it is nice that the directions are clearly written. Fun
Ya, bought all 3. Guess that says it all.
