Cynthia Gabriel, I hope this becomes a mainstay for every mom. A mom centered resource companion that journeys with her through the postpartum period. It gives women simplistic guidance all in one place.As a postpartum doula and advocate for maternal mental health, this is a must read for EVERY new mom. Realistic expectations and a support system are dire in the fourth trimester for any mom, let alone a new mom. I believe we fail our moms terribly by putting so much emphasis around labor and delivery with little focus on the postpartum period. As the book reads, we need more balance between prenatal care and postpartum support. Our western culture needs to embrace mothers during this crucial time. When a baby is born, so is a mother. I will recommend this book again and again.

I had hoped that this book would give me tips with "how to proceed" now that I have my baby in my arms. But unfortunately, it did not have any information in it that I would consider useful. It was also organized very poorly. Almost nonchalantly. The information was broad and somewhat vague. Really not worth it.

Such a helpful book for the days and months right after baby arrives.

Excellent book!

This book is such a gift to new parents! Cynthia does a wonderful job combining traditional wisdom, science and commonsense recommendation. "The Fourth Trimester Companion" avoids judgement and instead helps families find and feel confident in the best parenting approach for their own baby. She identifies true problems that families might encounter postpartum, but also explores what is normal adjustment after a baby (from sleep to sex — the postpartum sex chapter is especially great!). This book doesn't just rehash the same old advice, but offers a fresh perspective from an experienced mother, anthropologist and doula. As a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, and doula trainer, I'm recommending "The Fourth Trimester Companion" to all of my students, clients and the doulas I train. Get it!

If you are going to have a baby, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! It absolutely saved my life after my first baby came. The amount of practical wisdom and guidance combined with the invitation to really learn to trust myself as a mother was the best form of support I could have imagined! Cynthia is clearly an experienced birth professional who has learned a tremendous amount from her many years of experience, which she generously shares with us in this book. She is quite thorough in her explanation of the different phases a woman naturally experiences postpartum, which made me feel so much more sane and way less alone. She provides so many resources for new moms to get additional support, which is critical during such an intense time. Cynthia describes how to navigate all of the changing relationships post birth – from partners to grandparents to other children, to animals. It’s by far the most thorough and comprehensive book out there on the postpartum period.Honestly, I have reccomendedthis book to everyone I know who is having or just had a baby. I wish I lived closer to her so that she could be my doula when I have my next baby.

The Fourth Trimester provides practical and insightful information for new parents that can prevent much needless struggle! Cynthia has extensive experience that she incorporates into this book in an easy to read format.This would be an excecllent baby shower or new baby gift that would be always appreciated!

This was my most important, go-to resource when I was struggling with the first 6 months of being a new mom. Thank you for writing! I wish all parents could have a copy.
