Those knitters who love this book are inspired by the really creative yarn combinations - let's face it there are only so many bag shapes and as for textures? In felting, they all tend to look alike once felted. So what makes a bag "creative" is the color changing, the novelty yarns, the closures and other doodads once the bag is finished. This book is loaded with creativity - I've made all the bags and all but one was great fun. All the bags look great, even those that didn't turn out like the pictures. However, I don't think it's the best book for the new felter. The basic instructions are fine to get the bag felted (especially if you use Cascade 220 which is a 'can't miss' felting yarn.) Even so, the felting process relies on so many factors - water temperature, whether you use a spin cycle, your own knitting tension and also the fact that real mistakes can happen unless you have some felting expertise under your belt. For example, some colors can bleed if you try and change the color palette, the felt can get permanently wrinkled on the bigger bags unless you do a lot of checking - and not all washers are good for felting, etc.Those of us looking for inspiration and ways to expand our bag repertoire love this book as an addition to our library. The grommets, handles, and novelties are useful even if you expect never to felt a bag again.That said, those looking for a first time felting bag book should start with a book such as "Knit One, Felt Too : Discover the magic of knitted felt with 25 easy patterns"

This is a very good book. I have made four of the purses and they are beautiful. I will make two or three others. Although I know how to knit, I am new to felting. The "knitting basics" section is quite good and easy to understand. The abbreviations list is also very helpful. However, some of the pattern instructions could be a little clearer. For example: The flap instructions for the Spring Fling Bag found on page 19 begin with "with RS facing . . ." I know RS means right side but should you pick the stitches up with the front of the bag facing you, or the back? This affects the "ridge" on the top of the flap. I still don't know the answer to this and have made two of these bags. Would also appreciate listing some substitute yarns --- especially the fantasy/decorative yarns. Pursenalities: 20 Great Knitted And Felted Bags

I bought this book after borrowing this from a friend. My first project was the vintage hobo bag on page 16. Not only is it easy to knit, the bag is beautiful!!! We started circulating this pattern amongst our friends and now we are truly addicted. What I love most about this book aside from the patterns is that the author gives clear instructions on the actual felting. She also writes clear instructions on making flaps, buttonholes, i-cords and other details that assist the novice knitters.I highly recommend this book to others.

After making more than 20 felted bags, I consider myself a felting veteran, but I was blown away by the fantastic patterns found in Pursenalities. The patterns are clear, the results are amazing (I really wasn't sure I could do that with yarn until I tried, but the finishing touches on the bags (the zipper pulls and grommets) is where these patterns stand out. I thought I was tired of making felted bags until I bought this book. Now I am ready to keep on knitting!

After looking thru the book, I found many purses I now can't live without! They are cute and some trendy, some more classic..a perfect mix. Can't wait to start!

I wish the yarns used were more accessible to those not fortunate enough to have a yarn shop in the area and have to depend on the chain stores like Michael's that have a very limited selection or mail order which can be pricy. I know substitutions can be made but the yarns have to be researched and I guess the projects haven't inspired the effort, bar one or two. But the instructions are well writted and the pics are clear. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Am still a beginner when it comes to felting and it is nice that the directions are clearly written. Fun

Nice things to say, but when you read the book you quickly discover these are lies.The author tells us history is always progressing. At each stage of history there is a clash of ideas, and then the ideas meld, and another stage of progress begins. This is, of course, Hegel’s theory of the dialectic. Communist all the way. Then he divides society into three classes (The haves, the have nots, and the have a little want more), which is exactly what all communist do. The theory of class warfare is alive and well in these pages.Then we discover how little the individual means to him: “We now live in a world where no man can have a loaf of bread while his neighbor has none. If he does not share his bread, he dare not sleep, for his neighbor will kill him. To eat and sleep in safety man must do the right thing, if for seemingly the wrong reasons, and be in practice his brother’s keeper.” Rules for Radicals (p. 23). That is pure communist thought.Although he talks about means verses ends the result is an examination of the particular ends vs. the particular means. Thus, he endorses violence to achieve a goal if the group seeking the goal decides violence is justified. The author goes through a lot of historical fluff to explain this result, but it is pure communism. Communism embraced violence to achieve its ends from the first. In fact, violence was necessary and desirable. This was the foundation for Stalin’s murder of millions of Russians who did not support his regime. Alinsky’s regimes will lead to the same place, mass murder, but he refuses to acknowledge that fact.Alinsky writes as if he can take or leave religion; however, he bad mouths it at every turn. He finally argues that Christian- Judaeo religion tells us that disregard for the well being of others is immoral. This is wrong in the context he presents the argument. The author is saying it is immoral for The State (group) to ignore the well being of others. Christianity never tells the State to act on behalf of the well being of anyone. Only the individual is encouraged to act to help others. It is an outright lie to say Christianity tells the State to act on behalf of the well being of others.He finally rejects the concept of the importance of the individual by saying the individual is his own worst enemy, thus, the idea of the individual being greater than the State must die.The majority of the book is taken up with how to organize people to influence the government, and he is prone to encourage lying whenever necessary to achieve the murky goals of justice, morality, and order. In fact, the goal is communism by any means necessary including outright violence. He uses techniques taught by Linin and the communist international movement.Thus, the book is a lie from the start because it attempts to hide its true goals through misdirection of language. His real purpose lines up perfectly with communist teachings since the publication of the Communist Manifesto. The results of communism are clear for anyone to see. Millions upon millions killed in the name of "progress."In fact, the idea that the individual is greater than the state is the only political ideal that has ever brought freedom to anyone. Every other path leads to tyranny and murder on a vast scale.AD2

This is a very important work for anyone who's truly interested in "human behavior"and human psychology on many levels, and especially how most people, no matter who they are, can be manipulated. Much of what Alinsky has here has been known for hundreds if not thousands of years, but he organizes his data clearly and makes it very easy to grasp. He was a real "communicator" and probably an outstanding teacher. What he writes is readily recognizable as being implemented with real expertise by U.S. (and E.U.) controlling power groups to an astonishing, and vividly apparent, degree. For years, the radical left considered Saul Alinsky a soulmate. This book, published in 1971 just a year before he died, is still alternately admired or vilified by many across the political spectrum as the definitive playbook for aspiring political radicals who wish to organize opposition and engage in mass action. Alinsky himself is commonly considered a radical leftist, and his detractors consider him and many of the principles outlined in his book as unethical or hypocritical. However, the truth behind these now commonly accepted generalizations is a bit more nuanced.First of all, Alinsky himself seems clear from the outset that he does not advocate for any particular ideology, and in fact says that he detests and fears dogma. And truly, the precepts outlined in this book could be used by almost any movement that believes it can put “people power” to work. These are not just rules for “radicals” as the title suggests. In fact, the passage of time has rendered this title almost obsolete, as the very term “radical” no longer means what it once did. One only needs to read Alinsky to see how different it has become over the last 50 years. It is truly a propaganda victory for radicals that most seem to consider anything good for the masses as an inherently “radical” cause.When compared to the schemes, misinformation, and antics of today’s better known political figures, Alinsky reads like a veritable patriot in many places. When compared with many of today’s most prominent activists, he can sometimes sound almost like a voice of reason. Much of the book is given over to the central issues of effective human communication and organizing. In these respects, it is eminently rational. Consider the following from the Preface:“…there are certain central concepts of action in human politics that operate regardless of the scene or the time…[that] …make the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one who uses the tired old words and slogans, calls the police “pig” or “white fascist racist” or “motherf$%er.”…“Even the most elementary grasp of the fundamental idea that one communicates within the experience of his audience—and gives full respect to the other’s values—would have ruled out attacks on the American flag. The responsible organizer would have known that it is the establishment that has betrayed the flag while the flag, itself, remains the glorious symbol of America’s hopes and aspirations…”Most of Alinsky’s detractors label him a moral relativist and claim he is unethical probably because of his position that the ends can always justify the means. In his own words: "This grasp of the duality of all phenomena is vital in our understanding politics. It frees one from the myth that one approach is positive and another negative. There is no such thing in life. One man's positive is another man's negative. The description of any procedure as "positive" or "negative" is the mark of a political illiterate." Chapter 2, “Of Means and Ends” gets into this issue in exquisite detail. Here Alinsky has included as illustrative of his views an interesting narrative about Mahatma Gandhi, and although some readers will not agree and may label it “rationalization,” it is a very realistic and persuasive discussion.Chapter 5, “Communication,” contains some of the most important ideas in the book. One of the most important principles (alluded to above) is that “people only understand things in terms of their experience. When you can’t find the point in the others experience at which he can receive and understand, you must create the experience for him.”In Chapter 7, “Tactics,” the reader will find the actual list of “rules” that the title alludes to. Strangely, I doubt that most readers will find these rules particularly controversial or immoral.It is hard to tell whether Chapter 8, “The Genesis of Tactic Proxy,” is wrong or is merely poorly stated. Alinsky seems to suggest that all tactics are “accidental” or “response to reaction,” i.e., unplanned. What he may want to convey is the idea that some scenarios play out in unexpected ways, and one must take an opportunistic approach when a good moment presents itself.In the final chapter, “The Way Ahead,” Alinsky makes an interesting observation that seems eerily relevant to the 2016 election cycle. He opines that even if all low income parts of the population were organized, they would still not be powerful enough to drive significant, basic, needed changes, and that they would need allies. He believes organizing the lower middle class is the obvious answer. He goes on to describe what he sees as their typical values (and it is somewhat depressing to realize how little has changed in the time since this was written). These are the so-called “deplorables” that were left behind and ended up swinging the 2016 election.Regardless of political tendencies and what one may have read or heard about Saul Alinsky, this book is worth a read provided that it is read with a critical eye and a challenging attitude. Dr Hollis covers the passage into the middle years, the second adulthood, so throughly and completely it is a wonder this isn't standard reading for all adults! This may be a small book (certainly smaller and more concise than his similar and later work Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life: How to Finally, Really Grow Up) but it covers the topic so well. It seems especially recommendable to people interested in depth psychology and finding a map to navigate this critical and challenging passage.What I especially enjoy about Hollis is the literate sensibility he brings to his writing (often utilizing appropriate references from literature both old and modern), combined with his wise and welcoming experience of being human (every stage and experience has its place and value.... It's all good when we find it's meaning, and the struggle and suffering make it all the more recognizable and significant. The real problem is our modern culture is lacking in clear guidelines, maps and support from wise elders.... The challenging part is it's up to us here and now to create these essential functions.)This book covers an overview of the four stages/identities humans experience in a complete life (childhood and adolescence, which lead to the second adulthood beginning at midlife, leading to acceptance of mortality in old age). It clearly points out how the first half is about establishing our egos, and fitting in to expectations, while the second is about finding our individual voice and real meaning (the resolutions of often long buried questions). As Hollis says, "if we are fortunate to suffer enough, we are stunned into a reluctant consciousness and the questions return to us again." (Pg 19) I could quote so much more to give a taste of his gentle wisdom, but I will share just one more."During the Middle Passage, the insurgence of the shadow is part of a corrective effort made by the Self to bring the personality back into balance. The key to integration of the shadow, the unlived life, is to understand that it's demands emanate from the Self, which wishes neither further repression nor unlicensed acting out. The integration of the shadow requires that we live responsibly in society but also more honestly with ourselves. We learn through the deflation of the persona world that we have lived provisionally; the integration of inner truths, joyful or unpleasant, is necessary to bring new life and restoration of purpose." For some these seismic shifts break out in the stereotypical displays of the midlife crisis (jettisoning relationships and careers, for example) while others stew in quiet desperation and perhaps seek therapy or simply hope the disturbing rumblings will pass. In the author's words, "Anyone in midlife has witnessed the collapsing of projections, of hopes and expectations, and has experienced the limitations of talent, intelligence, and, often, of courage itself."James Hollis, a Jungian therapist with decades of experience as an analyst and teacher, has written this remarkable book which is the best I have seen at elucidating what the midlife passage means and the creative response it demands.Approaching the topic from the rich, poetic, and mystical perspective of depth psychology, Hollis maintains that our second lives call for nothing less than a renegotiation with the universe. In the first part of life, the ego is in charge and has projected unrealistic demands upon people, jobs, institutions and other aspects of the outer world. In the second half of life, Hollis maintains that these projections must be withdrawn and that we must undergo a new, inner journey based on what the soul demands. I am in awe of this book, possibly because its author paid much importance to the inner lives of the characters, unlike some action-filled novels lacking in depth.In the story, Renée Michel and Paloma Josse are the two main characters, who although living in the same apartment building do not know about each other and how much they are alike until more than halfway through the book.Renée Michel is a 54-year-old concierge from humble beginnings but with a developed mind and tastes who hides behind her vocation. Paloma is the 12-year-old, soon-to-be-13, who comes from a rich well-educated family; she despises her family, their snobbery, and the life she is being forced to live. Both Renée and Paloma concentrate and reflect on the nature of true beauty, art, and the meaning of life and death.Without giving much about the plot, I can only say that when one of the tenants in the building die and his apartment is bought by a Japanese man who understands and befriends both ladies, and then the two learn about each other and connect. The story has a sad but poignant ending.Although the novel has an immense amount of sophisticated cultural, philosophical, and enlightening thought, it also has a delicately balanced emotional side to it with gentle and reflective twists and turns and remarkably touching scenes at its end.The story is written from the two viewpoints of Renée and Paloma. The viewpoints are in different chapters and in two different typefaces; thus, it is easy to know who is the speaker. The characters are wonderfully developed and in addition to the original theme of what makes life worth living, the themes of hypocrisy, class consciousness, and the importance of arts and letters in a life make this a unique novel.I loved this novel for its delicateness yet at the same time its intensity and for its referrals to cultural icons and thoughts and the characters’ musings on them. There are some things about the characters that coincide with who I am. This, too, may be part of the reason why I enjoyed reading this book so much.

I never write reviews, but I feel like I am obligated to do it for this book. Too many undeserving negative reviews. Yes, this book has quite a number of prolonged philosophical "wonderings". And that's exactly why I loved it. It was an immersion into somebody else's world - a world of a pretentious teenager, a concierge woman who loves reading (no, not a genius as one review suggested, just a well read person).And their thoughts about the people around them, about the world. I think giving it one star is practically a sacrilege. You can mention that you didn't like it - I can understand that. But the writing is exquisite, it is beautiful. If you don't like philosophy, at least you can appreciate the language.In my world I would give one star to something like the Twilight books - the writing is pretty bad. However, the Elegance of the Hedgehog is nowhere close to something like that. If you like Action books, don't go for it. If you like slow paced books, books that make you think - this is a book for you.

This was quite frankly, one of the most self serving pretentious set of characters I have encountered in a very long time. If it had not been the assigned book for one of the book clubs I belong to, I would have deleted it from my Kindle within an hour of starting. At the 3/4 mark of the book, humanity attempts to take hold, but fails.If you enjoy lon, rambling, pretentious statements and characters that offer little to nothing to care about, this is a perfect book for you.

I felt as if I had found kindred spirits in Renee, Paloma, and Kakuro, old friends whom I had just met. It was joy to watch them find each other, but I must also warn you that the ending, while hopeful, is not entirely happy.This is a very remarkable book, full of deep (but not pretentious) philosophical rumination disguised as the day-to-day trivialities of life in an unremarkable apartment building in Paris.Also, the translation is itself quite remarkable. What must have been very idiomatic French has been rendered as equally idiomatic English (American English, at that). Since I don't read French, I can't be certain about the accuracy of the translation, but I had to keep reminding myself that it was not originally written in English.

The book was hard to get into; the first third is mostly interior monologue of a tired, grumpy, middle aged woman. Since I paid my $9.99 to Amazon, I kept going to get my money's worth. I am glad I did because the remainder of the book was a trip to the philosophical divine. The book is highly original, and does not fit into any genre. I can only recommend it if you are up for an adventure into the purpose of life.

i read 2 or 3 books a week. usually at some point, i reread those books. had to force myself through this book. the first words that came to mind -- pretentious & annoying. there were some interesting &/or amusing bits, but i recommend taking it out of a library instead of buying it. my favorite characters were Leo the cat and the woman who wanted to become a veterinarian. as for the ending -- seriously? i threw the book across the room.

I almost exclusively rely on Lonely Planet books for my international travel-- and this book is no exception. The information on here helped us out tremendously on our recent trip-- it even gave us a good baseline for the cost of renting a golf cart in Ambergris Caye!This is the most recent release of their Belize version, and it's pretty spot on. I know it's tempting to purchase an out-of-date copy, but it's generally worth the extra money to get the current one.

This is a great guide to Belize. It provides terrific, detailed information about each region, plus part of neighboring Guatemala. I knew practically nothing about Belize before reading it, so I was very happy to learn about the differences among the different regions, particularly with regard to how big the crowds are and how heavily developed they are. We prefer less touristy destinations, so that was great information for us. I'm very happy with this book.

Better than Fodors and we used them both on our latest trip.

I wanted a book that covered the whole country, not just the tourist places. I love this book. I learned that there were even more archelogical sites than I knew about. I hope I get to use it someday.

Love Lonley Planet and this book is just what I was expecting and looking for. It has information broken down by region, then within a specific section has things broken down by activities, food and places to stay. It even has suggested itineraries for different amounts of days in country. Would always recommend.

This guide is very deficient. You can very likely plan a better trip just on Google. It doesn't help you to eatimate the time you need in different places, It states very few prices (and Belize seems very stable pricewise). Information in general is very limited. And it's a guide on Belize only! Based on my experience in this trip I will consider a different guide for the next one.

Overall, this was a very nice read. The characters are well-thought out and you really want to see how their relationship develops and if their love blossoms. The author deals nicely with the social history of the era, introducing appropriate social conventions and assumptions and then playing on them and what is deemed "proper" throughout the book. The cons for me were that the book was a bit verbose in some areas, some of the foreshadowing was both heavy-handed and drawn out, and the book contained some stilted/unnatural conversations and inner dialogues of the characters (I understand they were having deliberately awkward relations at points within the book, but some of the language just seemed unrealistic/unnatural). Also, the title is a bit misleading; while she is certainly a reluctant duchess, I fear "firey" is a much too potent word to describe the love they share - more like "respectful and deep". Overall, a very good story with well-defined characters, good plot development with a fair amount of twists/turns/bumps in the road - I enjoyed it and would read more from Fanny Finch.

I enjoyed reading this story. It's about a most unlikely marriage between a nobleman and a commoner. A marriage of convenience for both, as much as Thea was against it. Joseph's mother made a demand that he marry within a week after the season started. His fabric merchant was scraping by to support his wife and 5 children. They struck a deal; he would marry his oldest, Thea, thereby supporting her family and he would spite his mother by marrying "below his station." It does have a HEA with an extended epilogue occurring 1 yr after the marriage. Although I became weary of Thea's distrust again and again and skimmed a few pages of repetition, the book is very much worth reading if you're a fan of historical romances.I received an ARC of this book. A Fiery Love for the Reluctant Duke is an interesting clean historical romance about finding love in an arranged marriage set up for all the wrong reasons.The story is entertaining, even though it is a little slow. I think it could have benefitted from the characters being less stilted and more physical beings. Their behavior towards each other was more what one would have expected from a couple courting than a married couple living in the same house. Keeping things platonic is one thing, but these two are nervous about holding hands.I’d recommend this book to fans of clean Regency romances.

Thea didn't want to marry. Her father was a merchant so it was unlikely that Thea and her two sisters would find suitable husbands. However, her father took his fabric samples to the Duke's new home so he could choose. Then, he invited the Duke to dine with his family. After that, he and the Duke decided it would be beneficial to both families if Thea and the Duke were to marry. Thea was unhappy with this and knew the ton would look down on her since her family was poor. Will this marriage between two people who didn't know each other and didn't want this marriage work? This is a lovely, sweet love story.

Quite an intriguing story about two people one hoping for a marriage of convenience and the other hoping to find love. Their journey through trials of being accepted was very trying to Thea who was really from a working class family. Being married to a duke wasn't easy for her, because she wasn't accepted by his class. The love of money being the root of all evil was a real changing point when she witnessed the changes it brought about in her family. It was quite silly the way they went about accusing each other for things that were unfounded.

Thea Caulfield is dismayed when she learns her father had made a deal with the Duke of Sandon for her hand in marriage. Now she is married to a man she doesn't love. The Duke of Sandon made a decision on impulse out of spite for his overbearing mother. Now he is married to a beautiful woman who doesn't love him. Can he show his wife how much he loves her? Can he get his wife to fall in love with him? Can Thea find love with her impulsive husband? Does she really want to love her husband? This is a clean and sweet romance.

As much as I always enjoy this authors historical romances, I was not fond of the beginning of this one. The Duke seemed too shallow and weak and Thea too petulant and unnecessarily critical. I'm glad I kept reading because the characters developed and the storyline was much more interesting after the first few chapters. It turned into a lovely romance and I especially liked the extended epilogue offered at the end of the book. I would like to see the epilogue lead into another book.

This is an unusual story as the bride really disliked her groom and pretty much set out to make his life as miserable as she was. However as time went on she has a change of heart and after all her complaining she begins to see the value of this man and how much she comes to love him. I almost gave up on them but am happy to say things worked out well in the end. A good tale with good and bad people and events which shaped their lives. You'll like I a lot!

Surprisingly, a product of the PJ series that I like as our grandson enjoys the book and reads it.

My PJ Masks kids loved this little read. It centers around Catboy but the other characters are in it. The graphics are amazing and the book is toddler proof and sturdy so it won't be a one and done like some books made for kids. It seems as though it will last. It's a fandom book so it won't be a Cat In The Hat or other such books we know are more than just childrens tales, but it will draw toddlers into learning to read, and that is a win.

No complaints here. It’s s good size for little hands.

This is an adorable book for a PJ Mask fan. It is small yet sturdy. I like that it is great for my two year old or four year old. There is alot of text within the book so its great for both. Its a bummer when you get a book that only has 3 words on each page. This book has more so keeps the children engaged. We ordered all three PJ mask character books and all were very cute!
