This book is great! So many recipes and the pictures make my mouth water. A must for any Peruvian-American kitchen. Disregard the comments that suggest that this book is a disappointment. Many people are complaining that ingredients are not easily available. Did you expect that Gaston Acurio would change the ingredients of traditional Peruvian cuisine to satisfy the American market? Not to mention that if you try just a little harder you'll find that most if not all ingredients are available at international grocery stores or Latin markets. Peruvian food is unique, you should have known that when you bought a book containing solely Peruvian recipes. The only drawback to this book is that the translation can be lazy at times, though if you're familiar with Peruvian food you should have no trouble overcoming this. Enjoy, you won't regret this purchase.

I believe this is one of those cookbooks for which you need to spend a lot of time getting used to the style of writing the recipes and listing the ingredients, to learn how to "interpret" the recipes. So far, all of the recipes I've tried from this cookbook have either had major errors in them or have been sketchy on preparation or what constitutes a "serving." By the way, the empanada recipes say, "Serves 4." What that means is that each person can have 1 little empanada.Part of the reason that the cookbook is so thick is that some recipes are repeated: If you're making empanadas, you do not need to have the recipe for the dough repeated for each type of filling, but that's what this cookbook does.The Chupe de Langostinos (shrimp chowder) recipe required quite a few changes to have flavor, according to a Peruvian cook I consulted. The estimated prep time for that recipe was grossly underestimated.Be prepared that you will have to make many ingredient substitutions. Peruvian cuisine takes advantage of fabulous ingredients that can be found no farther from Peru than, perhaps, Chile or Ecuador. Fortunately, the Internet helps you to find adequate substitutes-- adequate but not authentic.What's best about this cookbook is its appearance. Wow! Real fabric on the hard-bound book, sections color-coded along the edge in shades that mirror what's in the fabric. The two woven ribbons for marking pages are sturdy and of good quality. I will stick with this cookbook. I'm fortunate to have a friend who's a Peruvian chef & cook to help me in making this cookbook's recipes work.

Love this book! some say ingredients are “hard” to find haven’t been looking hard enough! lol i purchased stuff here on amazon if i couldn’t find it here at international grocery stores near me.the only down fall on this book is that i noticed some measurements were off. i’m peruvian so when i was making some stuff i knew right away it didn’t sound right. for example, alfajores required like a splash of butter to make the dough... i ended up using almost 3 sticks of butter to make the dough and they came out perfect!awesome book just needs to be revised for sure!

Gaston is the king of Peruvian cuisine and this is a must have. The translation in English is not always exactly spot on so it helps to have knowledge of Peruvian ingredients and produce. A beautiful book for the shelf too!

The book by itself is good as well as the recipes. I agree with other comments poor translation and not accurate. Hope they improve it.

I was happy to receive my book in the mail so quickly. The outside cover is textured and beautifully designed. The cookbook is exactly what I expected, being familiar with Peruvian cuisine, it has authentic recipes from Peru. I can't wait to try some of these recipes out!

I have spent quite a bit of time in Peru and am a fan of Gason Acurio. However, this cookbook was a disappointment to me. It seems like it was rushed to be published, and it shows. Some translations are poor and quantities listed in recipes are questionable.The worst part to me is the index. Why couldn't they also list the names of the dishes in Spanish also? For example, Lomo Saltado (one of the most ubiquitous dishes found in every Peruvian restaurant) can't be found under Lomo Saltado but instead is is listed under Stir-Frys as beef tenderloin. Causa is hidden under potatoes in the index. Rocoto Relleno is under chiles as stuffed rocoto chile. I'm still trying to figure out where there is a recipe for plata rellena is.As much as I wanted to love this book, it is literally the last Peruvian cookbook that I reach for when I'm looking for a recipe. I really hope someday they will edit/revise this cookbook.

Excellent cook book. I am not peruvian but I am the cook in the family and am always cooking for peruvians. They said the food tastes authentic, and I think it tastes great! Only issue is the recipes are supre oily and salty and I've found I have to dial both back quite a bit.

Please note that these cards are free to download as .pdf file on the scratch website. You would need to cut, fold, and glue the cards together. If this if for home use, perhaps the free version is the best way to go. However, keep in mind that you will be using quit a lot of color ink. So which is cheaper in the long run...printer ink or just buy these cards that's already nicely precut for you in bright engaging colors?If you are an educator and will need cards for multiple students to handle, then I recommend these.Something to note, it says 75 cards but that does not mean 75 lessons. There are 10 lessons total, and groups of ~ 5-7 cards makes up for one lesson. For example, a lesson on animating a dancing sprite may consist of 5 cards or more. The cards are numbered and clear to follow but you do need to follow it in numerical order for that lesson. However, you can jump around on the lessons...although some are more advance then others.

These cards provide some nice introductory activities that kids may enjoy if they want some guided activities on Scratch. It's nice to have a printed version, but everyone should know these cards are available for free online.

This is a great way to introduce the Scratch interface to my students. They love the tasks and are surprised with the control have over the Sprites. While they "play" with the Sprites, students are introduced to loops, variables, axis, and radius, to mention a few. I teach technology and have used this in a STEM camp and my classroom but these might also be used as a center in a math class.

A good step by step way of teaching how to create a primitive video game using Scratch with children.I plan on using it with 4th & 5th grade students.

These are nice. A good size. I wish the projects listed the skills practiced. I want to know the basics, like is this activity for sequence, looping, functions, variables, and such. I can do this on my own, but was hoping it would be within the product. These activities are great starters for kids learning to code.

I like the durability of the cards. Very colorful and engaging!

There have been some wonderfully descriptive reviews written for this book. Rather than reiterating once again what happens in the book, I'd like to come at it from a different point of view.My husband and I used to have houses and apartments we rented out, and in the late '70s and early '80s we rented to Vietnamese families. We also had Cambodian families and once a Laotian family. They made great tenants. They always had the rent ready and never asked if it would be all right to be late. They also fed us when we came to collect. It gave us a loved and wanted feeling, contrary to what we experienced with some other tenants. We ate some amazing things, understanding that it was not polite to refuse. I expect it was just as well our tenants did not know the names of their dishes in English. I think we were happier that way.Then around 1985, I think, the flow of Asian tenants dried up. We waited, but they did not come. My husband and I talked it over and decided to go looking for an answer, and perhaps find some new Asian tenants. Knowing there were Vietnamese places of business on East University Avenue in San Diego where we lived, we went there and stopped in first at a place which published a Vietnamese newspaper. We relayed our question to the lady working there. She listened politely as I explained, and then looked at us a little oddly."I can answer your question," she said, "but do you really want to know?""Yes," we said."I cannot speak for the Cambodians and Laotians. I only know about the Vietnamese. Your tenants may not have spoken enough English to tell you this, or did not want to speak of it because they wanted to forget a terrible time, but I am sure you know that they were rescued from almost certain death at sea, if they were refugees. America was the first country to open her doors to them, allowing them to come in. For that they are grateful, incredibly grateful. With the help of sponsors, kind people like you rented to them. They subsisted on Welfare and other government programs and they went to school, paid for on their behalf by your," she paused, smiled, and amended, "our government. They studied hard, became citizens, took their degrees, and went to work. No more Welfare because no more assistance was needed. Now," she said, "they are doctors and nurses and lawyers. Some will soon be judges. They are plumbers and masons and carpenters. Some," she smiled wider, "print newspapers for our people, especially the older people for whom a new language is difficult. But the tenants you are looking for do not come because they no longer need to rent houses and apartments. Now they are buying their own."I've thought of that lady and her words many times since then. That is the way it's supposed to work! Take advantage of what is given, go to school, achieve as well as you can (and they could!) and go to work. It was the first time our Welfare system made perfect sense to me.Dr. Vinh Chung speaks of just that thing in his book as he tells the story of the lives of his mother and father in Viet Nam, their escape and near death at sea, and their miraculous rescue. In the beginning of the book he speaks of the degrees attained by himself and his ten siblings, people who could not speak a single word of English when they arrived and were painfully trying to adjust to a culture which bore little if any similarity to their own. But their love of education shines out, their parent's refusal to accept mediocrity because they wanted a better life for their children than they had and they recognized and pushed their offspring to accept the opportunities before them.This is a great book, absorbing and never dull. I should add it is written with a wonderful sense of humor. Except for the part when they were at sea, I chuckled all through the rest of it. Dr. Chung has a great way of laughing at himself. I truly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

The book deserves a wider audience -- among those more inclined toward the secular, toward humanism, toward science, and especially those with an interest in sociology.There is nothing in the book that should put such readers off. On the first page of the Forward, written by Richard Stearns, the President of World Vision U. S., Stearns writes:"All along the way good people, and many good Christians, intervened with a helping hand."A father is frantically running, carrying his ten-year old son, who is near death, to a hospital in a strange land. A woman stops him -- a stranger. She speaks French, which he can't understand. She hands him a few bills and he is able to take a cab to the hospital. Leaving the hospital, again carrying his weak son, another stranger hands him $5, and he is able to take a cab back to the refugee camp. A stranger tucks a $100 bill into the shirt pocket of a three-and-a-half year old refugee boy who is rushing through the San Francisco airport with his family, and that $100 enables the Chung family to buy food in their new home in America. We know nothing about the religious perspectives of these strangers. We do know that they were good, decent, humane. And there is no religious test that people must pass before they may pay taxes to support programs such as food stamps, subsidized housing, and free school lunches -- programs that helped to save the Chung family.Anyone who has an interest in "the boat people" who fled Vietnam after South Vietnam fell to the communists in 1975 will find this book enlightening. Who were they? Why did they leave Vietnam? How did they get to the United States? And how did things go for them here in America?The Chung family is Chinese, with roots in Vietnam going back several generations. They owned one of the largest businesses in the Mekong Delta -- a multi-million dollar enterprise.When the communists took over in 1975, they confiscated the Chung business, and the Chung home. Over the course of the next few years the Chung's reached the conclusion that, if they remained in Vietnam, they would spend the remainder of their lives in poverty. They made meticulous plans to escape, and departed their community of Soc Trang a few at a time, so as not to attract attention. They went to Ca Mau, where they boarded a boat that the Chung's had bought -- a boat large enough for their extended family, and 16 other families -- a total of 290. They left in June, 1979, just as the typhoon season was beginning, intent on crossing the pirate-infested South China Sea, with food and fuel for only a few days.On the second day at sea, pirates boarded their ship. After robbing them the pirates rammed their ship, hoping to sink it and drown them all.On the third day they reached Malaysia. They beached their boat and scuttled it in hopes of not being turned away. When they jumped from the ship into the sea on the Malaysian coast they left behind almost everything, including their shoes. Malay military took them into custody, and marched them for five days from one sandy beach to another. Vinh describes how his nine-year-old sister Yen's tender feet were scorched by the hot sand. During this march their mother (her eight children ranged in age from 12 to twin boys 18 months old) had a miscarriage and was hospitalized for nine days. The family did not know where she was, and she did not know where her family was. She was almost shipped off to France without her family; her family was almost shipped "to an island refugee camp" without her. She was reunited with her family less than an hour before they were removed from Malaysia.The way they were removed from Malaysia is one of the most awful parts of their experience. The 290 of them were divided and put in four small boats, and were told that they would be towed to a refugee island, a couple hours away. Instead, they were towed out to the middle of the South China Sea -- 20 hours -- and cut loose; abandoned to die. Within hours each boat had drifted out of sight of the others.On the fourth day of being adrift, they had their second encounter with pirates. This time the pirates didn't try to rob them -- perhaps the pirates knew that they had already been totally stripped of anything of value. The pirates simply tried to overturn the boat and drown them. Two boats were working in tandem, with a rope stretched between them. The rope broke, and the engine on one of the boats stalled. That is all that saved them.They drifted in the South China Sea for six days, under an unrelenting sun, without food or water, and had essentially given up and were waiting to die, when they were rescued by the Seasweep, a ship sponsored by World Vision.After 100 days in a refugee camp in Singapore, they at last learned that they had a sponsor -- a small Lutheran Church in Fort Smith, Arkansas.Without knowing a word of English, and facing ethnic hostility, they began to make a new life in Fort Smith, with the help of local churches and government programs designed to assist impoverished families. For a while four of the brothers had no assigned place to sleep -- it was first come, first served. After the laundry was done, pants went into one hopper, shirts into another, and again it was first come, first served, as the eight sons looked not for what was theirs, but for what fit. Vinh, the author, tells us that none of them ever said, "That belongs to me." When their father, Thanh, decided that they should open a restaurant, the older children dropped out of college for five years and all of the family worked in the restaurant without pay.This family, working together, was able to achieve "the American dream." The children hold 21 degrees, including five master degrees and five doctorates. Vinh, the author of Where the Wind Leads, is a dermatologist. Yen, the nine-year old girl who had a knife held to her throat by a pirate in the South China Sea, is an ultrasonographer. Another is in science management; another a senior systems engineer; the twin boys, who at 18 months old had been dropped, kicking and screaming, into pillow cases so they could be hoisted aboard the Seasweep, are both optometrists; another is a family physician; another a dentist.As other reviewers had said, this is a compelling read. Vinh has a great sense of humor, the book is very well written, and while the family's faith is evident, there is no attempt to impose it on others.

This is a strong and moving book. It is well written and has earned its 5 stars. It is the story of family---more so than any book I have ever read. Vinh has 10 siblings and Is blessed with a mom and dad who always put the children first. After the Americans pulled out of South Vietnam the communist from the North occupied. 95 members of one family fled the brutality of their enemy. They endured inhumane conditions as they searched for a country that would allow them to enter. This is a vivid account of what can happen to refugees who try to escape to safety. They were picked up and saved from the South China Sea ---when all were near death from lack of water and food. Even in America the family suffered from Ill treatment, discrimination, poverty and lack of language skills, but they made it. America did not make it easy for them but only here could they have accomplish the same degree of success. This book is a tribute to hard work, family and American freedom. The author remembers little of the brutal escape to freedom because he was only three years old. However, as an adult I am compelled to point out his life achievements. Vinh Chung graduated Harvard magna cum lauds and graduated from HarvardMedical School, He studied at University of Sydney as a Fulbright Scholar and completed a master of pharmaceutical science. He also holds a master of theology from the University of Edinburg. Wow. Give a guy a little freedom and see him fly!!!

About the Author

John Hull was born and raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He became enamored with the Avanti upon viewing it in 1962 at the ripe old age of 11. A suggestion....Any future editions of this book should be renamed "Avanti The Manufacturing Story".Hull brings together the various lives of the Avanti, a story that spans no less than five decades, four production factories and enough owners and principals to fill several of the fiberglass luxury cars.The book traces the history of the Raymond Lowey designed coupe from its inception as a potential savior /image car for the venerable Studebaker company to its latest incarnation as a Mustang re-clothed in body panels that manage to be both retro and futuristic at the same time.Hull knows his subject well as a one time CFO for the latest resurrection effort and as the editor of the Avanti club magazine. He does a commendable job in putting the pieces together. Minor criticisms include not using many direct quotes from important figures. Hull paraphrases a magazine interview (which he references) with #3 Avanti owner Stephen Blake and a panel discussion by owner #4, Mike Kelly. Why not use the men's own words?My biggest complaint is what you won't find here... details of the cars themselves.Aside from a nice production total which finally answers who made how many, and where, most technical details: engines, performance specifications and importantly, prices are missing. A few answers are tucked away in ads and company literature pieces that have been reproduced (often too small) but I think he could have made a stronger effort to help the reader place the Avanti in the general automotive world. Later versions are noting as being produced on Monte Carlo, Caprice, Firebird and Mustang chassis. I would have like to learn how those were accomplished. Did the factory arrange to buy chassis and drivetrains...or did they have to buy a entire car and "throw away" the original bodies? Hull mentions that there were several donor-car proposals for the late 1990s AVX project. It would have been nice to see them. They have been published in a recent issue of the Avanti magazine, so I know they're out there.Most photos are reproductions of factory pieces. Unfortunately, nearly all the shots of the Studebaker cars (which make up the majority of the total Avanti population) are limited to a pair of prototype cars. They are interesting to see the, but six pages of the same two cars? Sadly, no new photos of the 63-64 cars are included which would help the casual reader learn to what extent the original cars are lovingly maintained and restored by faithful owners. Also, factory production shots of the Studebaker -era cars are missing along with details of advertising. The factory record setting effort is mentioned only in passing.If you want to learn a technical history of the car, I'd recommend "Avanti Limited Edition Extra" a collection of old and new magazine tests and articles complied and published by Brooklands in the United Kingdom and a subscription to the Avanti Magazine published by the Avanti Owners Association International.So, it's a nice book for an Avanti owner or fan to have. But a newcomer to the car will only be getting half of the history for the car that won't die.

An excellent book about the Studebaker Avanti. If you love them like I do you'll want a copy of this book. Excellent pictures. Get both editions by the same author.

John Hull is an Avanti afficionado who was intimately involved with one of the most recent efforts to revive this marque. The numerous color photos of the various incarnations of this Raymond Loewy design will appeal to the Avanti enthusiast as well as to anyone who wants to "see" the evolution of this sleek, 'glas-bodied classic. The text is both accurate and concise, presenting a balanced view of the history of the car that has far outlived its parent company, the Studebaker Corporation.Each successive chapter discusses the evolution of the Avanti beginning with its Studebaker origins, through the stewardship by Newman & Altman, Kelly, Cafaro, Bunting, and Seaton - culminating with the 2006 transition to Cancun, Mexico and the arrest of Mike Kelly on Federal charges related to his hotel businesses.The production data from 1962-2007 is the most comprehensive and accurate compilation ever offered. Overall, this is an excellent overview of the fascinating history of this American classic.

"The Complete Story" may be a bit misleading if you're an Avanti fan looking for the complete story. If the photos were removed from the 126 page book, the reader would be left with about 35 pages of text to tell the complete 45 year story. Not that the pictures aren't interesting, many are quite nice, rare, and unusual. Avanti fans will enjoy them. The text, however, tends to ramble in places, lacks insight into important aspects of the Avanti's history, and leaves the reader, at least this one, wanting more. Perhaps, "Avanti A Brief Overview With Pictures" would have been a better title. That said, it was probably worh the Amazon price. I would have been disappointed if I had paid the suggested retail price.

An informative and worthwhile book for anyone interested in Avanties.

It does take you from inception to the end of the Avanti. It stimulated me enough to join the Avanti club and get their quarterly mag.

If you love the Avanti, you'll love this book! Lots of great pictures and details about the changes the car went through over the years.
