It took me a few chapters to get into this book but once I did, Wow! The story revolves around Dita, a young Jew, who is placed in the family blockof Auschwitz and takes on the position as librarian. Books are banned and the position is extremely risky. While reading The Librarian, the characters began to feel like family and I could literally feel their pain, hunger, fear and sorrow. The details provided about the conditions of Auschwitz is beyond imaginable. And to think that Dita has it much easier than the inmates in Auschwitz I. The number of innocent lives taken by the Nazi party is horrific, as well as the causes of the deaths. I found the takes of the doctor's experiments to be the absolute worse. I can not help but wonder what type of monster it takes to do the things he did especially to childre . This book leaves you sad and feeling empty but at the same time grateful that there has been nothing similar since. Great book. Highly recommend.

I just finished Night by Elie Wiesel so when I came across this book I thought it was going to be another powerful read. I really wanted to like the book but the story started off weird. Within chapter 1 there was a young girl name Dita running all over the place. She was out of control, climbing up on a stove and jumping off, knocking over stools and being an unruly young child (I perceived her being around 7-9). All the teachers were frightened and telling her to stop. They were terrified she was going to get them in trouble or worse. Then in chapter 2 it is explained that Dita was a 14 year old girl who was given the responsibility of protecting illegal library books in Auschwitz. The job was given to her by teachers/grownups. Then why was she behaving that way in chapter 1? Why would they give her the responsibility to care for something that could lead to death if she has undisciplined behavior? Why would the adults give that responsibility to a "child" in the first place if they truly understood their situation? Is this a second Dita or the same Dita just older? I reread chapter 1 because obviously I am missing something. I thought it was me. I don't know if this book is poorly written or just a bad translation. It was confusing so I decided not to go on after chapter 2. I may pick it up again in future but as of right now, I'll move on.

While the topic of the Holocaust can make for some pretty depressing and saddening reading, I'm always on the lookout for any "untold" stories. Untold to ME, that is. I'm sure others already knew about this lady, but I had no idea. As a real-life librarian, the premise of a "librarian" in Auschwitz intrigued me. It was a heartbreaking, but satisfying journey to read this story. The amount of courage this young girl had just astonishes me. I'm in awe of how she was able to stay strong and think of others in the midst of such horrendous atrocities. I highly recommend this book.

I have read many Holocaust books in my life, not really to learn anything new about WWII, but to learn new stories about those who lived through this event, and honor those who had the misfortune to be alive, living in those unbearable conditions.I hold books like the Nightingale, all the books by Roberta Kagan, Saving Sophie, Finding Rebecca, Rebecca’ s Key, The Invisible Bridge, and of course The Diary of Anne Frank, as well as The Librarian, close to my heart, just as Dita held her books close to her during her time in Concentration Camps. The author met Dita many years after the war, and wrote her story for us all to know, admire, and be amazed by her spirit, and bravery. He even goes on to tell what happened to each of the Natzi leaders in the epilogue. There is even a surprise connection with Anne Frank.Through this horror, many children are taught to read, learn about history, geography, the wonder of books by loving teachers, who try to keep things as normal as possible for the children. If I could, I would put this book, along with Anne Frank’s Diary, Into every child’s hands, as well as every adult’s. It really is a gift.

As a veteran reader of Holocaust literature, I found this book to be informative. That is, it's the first account that I've ever read from inside the "family camp" at Auschwitz. The author's description of the teenager charged with the security of the camp's 8 books is necessarily fictionalized to a great extent; many details and some dialogue could not have been contemporaneous facts. However, this is a small issue. Whereas I thought I had a fairly comprehensive understanding of this concentration camp (and others), I wasn't aware of the specific conditions that prevailed there, that the inmates established a school so that children could benefit from some sense of normalcy, and that parents and children actually lived together (within reach, or in nearby barracks) for extended periods. They certainly experienced awful conditions, which adds poignancy to the "librarian's" nightmarish personal history.

This book was a really good read. It brings hope to a dire situation. It will expand your love for books in a way like no other.

This was a great story based on a real person whom the author was able to meet at one point. When you think of these young teenagers in a setting like Auschwitz and how much older they really had to be, it’s a heartbreak on to of the already soul-crushing events of the Holocaust. The story sometimes moves a little slowly, but since it’s not entirely fiction, some of the small details were probably important to include.A quick read for adults and worth the read.

Recently I asked a friend how to recommend this book and how one could not recommend this book. I have read dozens of Holocaust books, but never one like this one. You are there in Aushwitz while thanking G-d you are not really there. The story is amazingly haunting, yet one everyone must read. Books are precious, as are libraries. This particular library and its librarian are stunning examples of what the Germans tried unsuccessfully to do.

Cora, who is a Very Good Girl, winds up with something she doesn’t want but truly needs: a Very Bad Crocodile! Full of joy and silliness and mischief and mayhem, it also teaches some deep and wise lessons about knowing and feeling one’s own feelings, and having the courage to speak up for one’s own needs, even when the people in charge, who are supposed to be wise, don’t want to listen. Something many children may need to hear — and may be a few grownups, too!I would recommend this for all young readers. The language may be a little advanced for age 4, depending on the child, but the ideas and the illustrations will still carry the story; the language in the concepts could probably be interesting up through age 7 or 8, because there is enough to take from the story and the pictures as a jumping off point for further conversation. The mad, bad, wild, butt-biting crocodile also adds enough interest for any children who, on the face of it, might resist a story that seems to be about a nice princess. On the negative side, it’s unfortunate that this is yet another children’s book that seems to show the world as consisting only of Caucasian people. The princess & castle type of story takes place in a fantasy Early Europe, when “European” was synonymous with “Caucasian.” So the author is just being consistent with this. Still, if we can imagine talking, magic crocodiles, maybe we can imagine less homogenous human characters in our contemporary books. This may be a consideration for families, like ours, that seek diversity in their reading.

Read this out loud to my 5 year old twins. They loved it! They haven't started kindergarten yet (to gauge comprehension levels). We read a chapter or 2 a day. These chapters are not dense like a novel, but they are more word heavy than a preschooler's book. There are 7 chapters with about a picture every time you turn the page to help their imaginations along. The print is fairly large as well. An older reader would also enjoy the subject matter. My 5 year olds just aren't reading yet and when they start, it won't be on longer books like this. Overall, cute book.

My granddaughter is named Cora, so of course, I bought this book. She is a baby so I read it to her older brothers. I took a picture with my iPhone of the lovely cover and printed it out and framed it for Cora's room. This is an idea for anyone who wants gets pictures for a kid's room, such as the cover of Goodnight Moon or this book.

While the basic story is formula {it is another princess...groan) the author's treatment and superb writing set this one above a ton of others. Best crocodile ever! And Cora is not TOO "princessy". This story actually does a lot to redeem the stricken princess theme. Total delight.

Wonderful story. Beautiful, color illustrations that kept my newly turned 7 year old twins extremely engaged. My girls are just starting to read early chapter books, and I am always on the look out for chapter books with color illustrations - it just helps keep them interested. Reading is hard work for them at this point, and color illustrations have made the transition from picture books to chapter books a lot easier. We loved this book!

For those of you with children between the ages of 4 and 8, I highly recommend Princess Cora and the Crocodile. It's the story of a young princess who longs for one day of freedom from her strict nanny and overprotective parents. Help arrives in the form of a naughty yet lovable crocodile with a hankering for cream puffs. Cora is a winsome and adventurous heroine and children will be both horrified and delighted by the crocodile's bad behavior. Schlitz's amusing story is marvelously enhanced by Floca's playful illustrations. In my opinion, this is one of the best children's books of the year.

My 5 year daughters love this book! It is the story of a young princess who wishes to break free from her stodgy existence. With the help of a troublesome crocodile, she's able to experience a day off. When she returns, the crocodile has made such a mess of things, that the king, queen and nanny relent to her requests for a change to her daily routine.

One of our favorite books in our family. We love it as much as our 6-year-old daughter. We have easily read this book 5 times during the first month we had it.

#953,307 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I got this when it was on sale, I'm a Funko collector and thought it would be interesting to check out. I wasn't really a fan of anything in here besides TMNT, but surprisingly the TMNT issue was not my favorite part of this collection. I didn't read the Ghostbusters issue, I'm saying that upfront, Ghostbusters just isn't something I've ever really been interested in, so I don't have very much to say about it. The TMNT issue takes place in the original cartoon universe and while I liked it okay, it wasn't quite what I was expecting. It was funny, but the comedy mostly comes from the references to all the cliches from the old show and I liked that to some extent, I just wished there was a little more to the humor besides that. I didn't like it as much as I wanted to, but it was okay. The real surprises for me were the X-Files and Judge Dread issues. The X-Files is a show that I have seen a couple episodes of, I can appreciate it, but it isn't something I watch regularly or anything. The X-Files issue is made up of shorter stories and I really enjoyed them. They're all really funny and I was surprised that I ended up liking it more than the TMNT issue. Judge Dread was also made up of shorter stories, and they were also really funny, I loved the one with the dog. The Strawberry Shortcake issue was okay, again I'm not a big fan so I don't really know anything about Strawberry Shortcake, but it was enjoyable enough. The art for all of these are all done in slightly different versions of the Funko Pop style, I thought it was pretty cool, but if you're not really a fan of Funko Pops, then you probably won't like it very much.Overall this was an okay collection, but I really only recommend it if you're looking for some laughs and are a Funko collector and fan, and a fan of at least two or three of the franchises in here.

It is my view that folktales - tales of such quality that people kept the story alive for centuries - are excellent literature for people of any age. Anne Cameron aims her retellings of Northwest Native tales at a young audience but all of us can enjoy all of them.In this tale, Spider Woman saves the earth from the birds of torment - Spider Woman uses a spider web and a tall tree to hold the earth in place - and to put most birds of torment into their proper place on the other side of the sky blanket. An aside - one bird of tormet not expelled is tooth-ache, the subject of the oldest known written tale (from Mesopatamea).

We travel to CR yearly and I’ve contemplated buying a home there, expanding my business, or investing in a greater way. This book covers many of the common concerns, as well as some of the hinky laws and banking issues that make it difficult as a US citizen. I’m still on the fence, but have a better understanding than from what I’d obtained down there. Would love to take these folks to dinner in Playa Langosta; they have a great consulting opportunity with those of us baby boomers considering the plunge! Pura Vida!

A lot of good ideas....but the authors aren't good negotiators....they said to expect to pay about $85. a day for a rental car ... I left for Costa Ricatwo days after I got the book in the mail....and I got a car for $38.00 per day. I have a Capital One Venture card ( which is a card that coversphysical damage to the vehicle your renting ), so all I needed was the liability ( which by the way was the same card the Page's said they used ??).They will try to hit you with a huge damage deposit (like $5,000 !) I talked them down to $3,000. That's a deposit you get back a few days after renting.

Interesting read. I've visited Costa Rica (Tamarindo and Playa Flamingo) a few times but never thought of moving there. I've met a few American's that have made the same choice. I enjoyed learning what's it's like to be an expat in Costa Rica.

This is a good, quick read for anyone thinking of relocating or even visiting Costa Rica for an extended period of time. Although most of the “action” takes place around a small area of the country the book gives a good overview of what to expect when in CR.

I bought this book before taking a trip down to Costa Rica because if I move or don’t move there is a lot of very helpful information on how the country works and local options. David and I are retiring to Costa Rica, and we have purchased books in the past, on line search, and this book is full of information for the common traveler or someone considering moving to Costa Rica. We worth the purchased, we are very happy that we came across this book. This book covers from hotels, to grocery's, cars....

Very informative...LOVE the title...too expensive

Dangerous as the world is today, let us not succumb to the false security and protection that a dictatorial coup d'etat may lead us into l

It is 4 AM and I have just finished reading, in one sitting, the Kindle download of a book that I only intended to skim because I thought that I knew the full story. What was compelling was encountering the courage and decency of this whistleblower and that of the few brave journalists willing to honestly tell his story. That and the justifiable contempt for those in the housebroken media and compromised government who felt the need to besmirch the character of those willing to bear witness to crimes that almost everyone else in a position to know chose to ignore. The result is a page turner survey of just what the Snowden leaks tell us about the creation of the modern surveillance state and a reminder of the deep wisdom of this nation's founders in insisting on the Constitution's Fourth Amendment. This is a brilliant book that you will want to pass on to that neighbor absolutely convinced that the hollowing out of liberty has made us safer. Glenn Greenwald reminds us just why the Guardian and Washington Post won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in publishing the documents that Edward Snowden made available and how outrageous it is that his effort to inform the public of attacks on their freedom has left this brave young man a hunted fugitive.

A brief note before you purchase this book:This is not a book written for the purpose of telling you the US government is watching your every step and every move, everyone knows that. And the author did not waste time replicating news articles you've already read through the media outlets. I finished this book within 5 hours, and thought it was well written and well worth your time.Greenwald, one of the original journalists who revealed Snowden's leaks last year, did a remarkably good job on going over the history of U.S.'s surveillance tactics. In his new book, No Place to Hide, Greenwald briefly goes over his adventures/experience on meeting with Edward Snowden and revealing US's NSA surveillance program. Greenwald explains the difficulties and obstacles that were involved before the story went live, mostly by reluctant lawyers, and news agencies such as NYT and Washington Post. For those curious, Greenwald also explains in detail the true intentions of Edward Snowden.Later chapters of the book reveal Greenwald's opinion on the recent NSA leaks, and his classification of US as a surveillance state.Keep in mind that Greenwald was previously a columnist, and his writing style of a columnist is clearly seen throughout the book. This is not merely a book with facts, but a book with opinion, with logical and concrete evidence that not just the U.S., but other state actors are well, are progressing into what George Orwell wrote in his infamous 1984 novel (Orwellian state).Greenwald ends the book by warning the consequences involved as we progress into the Orwellian state and the issue of journalists not being journalists, but being government puppets instead. This is a highly recommended book for those who wish to read into detail one of the biggest government leaks in the history.

The answer to the question posed in the title of this review is a definite yes, and follows vacuously if, as the author of this book asserts, that the National Security Agency (NSA) collects data at the scale claimed. This scale covers every person on the planet, and therefore the NSA views everyone as a potential terrorist. Information on everyone is collected and then stored in the NSA’s data repositories, which indeed must be massive in order to store this magnitude of data. Edward Snowden, a former contractor for the company Booz-Allen-Hamilton (BAH), has revealed that the NSA is engaging in this activity. Snowden was placed by BAH in the NSA to engage in security work some of which was classified as Top Secret. As this book and ensuing documentaries reveal, because of moral and ethical reasons Snowden made the decision to abrogate the trust the NSA placed in him and put himself at risk for an extended prison term because of the information he chose to place in the public domain. The author of this book makes a good case for the morality behind Snowden’s decision, and therefore readers who formally viewed Snowden as a “criminal” or a “narcissist” may make a different assessment of his character after finishing the book. There is no doubt that Snowden did not view his decision as one of self-aggrandizement, and in fact exercised restraint in the sense he chose to not reveal information that could put people at severe risk. It might be a leap to call Snowden a “hero”, but he certainly possesses a level of intestinal fortitude that is unmatched by anyone in the government, whether the United States government or otherwise. The details of some of the revealed information are included in this book as images, with some of them actually looking as though they originated in PowerPoint presentations. That this may be the case reflects the obsession that many, especially those connected with the Department of Defense (DoD), have in using PowerPoint to not only summarize ideas but also to codify the information in them as valid, authentic, or profound. Therefore it was difficult for the reviewer to accept the author’s (implicit) premise that the information in these images as reflecting anything of genuine importance to those readers who want to understand the extent of the NSA’s illegal surveillance. Typical government/DoD PowerPoint presentations, even though quite impressive from an artistic point of view, reflect a naiveté about scientific and technological matters in general. There is no reason to believe that this is not the case also for the NSA, in spite of the imputation of technical and mathematical competence given to it.And this raises the further question as to the efficacy of the NSA in doing the analysis and data mining that would actually put individual privacy at risk. Many in the press have claimed that the NSA hires thousands of mathematicians and analysts and this is no doubt true. But what is not obvious from the press or from this book is the extent that this technical pseudo-army is able to extract damaging information about citizens or indeed any really useful information at all. The mere presence of thousands of analysts and mathematicians in a government agency may reflect the usual practice of patronage and other faulty and unethical governmental hiring practices rather than actual technical competence. But one could also argue, and it seems to be the belief of the author, that the NSA is technically competent to use the gathered information to find individuals who it deems are “harmful” to the interests of the United States. Then since the NSA has no qualms in violating the constitutional rights of US citizens by collecting “metadata” then it would not be an unreasonable assumption that it would collect the actual content of phone calls, Email messages, and so on. It would also not be unreasonable to assume that the NSA would deliberately alter the content of messages and phone calls in order to embarrass certain individuals or groups as part of their security strategy or simply from just pure meanness. There is ample precedent in history for the meanness of governments.
