This is an autobiographical story of the author's visit to a western mining town many years ago. It is easy to read, full of lots of humor and colorful characters. I borrowed a copy to do some research and liked it so much I decided to buy my own copy.

I lived for 15 years in the Silver Valley. My husband worked for both the Sunshine Mine and Bunker Hill Mine. His father worked and retired from the Sunshine. Our family enjoyed many years of living in this mining community, enjoying the natural beauty of the Coeurd'Alene river and camping, fishing and hunting in the area. Fritz Wolff's account of his life in that area and his memories of the mining community/industry were a pleasure to read. He wrote of places and people and things familiar to myself and members of my family. I hope many will want to read this book just because it's an interesting read.

This book describes a young man working in a mine during the summer. He learns the importance of cooperation while taking on one of the most dangerous jobs. He learns from the local populace how close the community is and the friendliness that exists. He also finds the local history is quite colorful and deep in tradition.

I was raised in the community in this book and know the places and faces very well. This is a very fun and comfortable read. The author will warm your heart immediately with the recollections of his youth and how this summer was a turning point for him. He looks back with a twinkle in his eye. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

There have been attempts over the past 3 decades to humanize the mining business. Fritz's tale, seen through the eyes of a college kid 60 years later, is one of the finest. I know or knew several of the people he describes in his narrative; they'll vouch for his authenticity. Thank-you, Fritz. You have ennobled my friends.

One of the best books I've read on mining history in the Northwest. Very personal and funny.

enjoyed reading about Shoshone county Idaho and mining and locals.

Purchased this book bcause of personal interest in the area . I felt it took on an elegantarian view and was a bit arrogant. While the authors descriptions appeared accurate his technical description of the whorehouse/brothel is way of base.

I saw this book at our local public library toddler time. My granddaughter loved it, so I bought one for her. She loves animals, especially elephants, and the zoo, so this was a perfect book to introduce the issues of loss of animal habitat and the need for us to preserve areas for animals to live in the wild.

My 18 month old is obsessed with this book, we read it for hours every day. There are no words, just a Where's Wally style hunt for the elephant, parrot and snake. The book also addressed the theme of deforestation and urbanization that I look forward to be able to discuss when he's older - there is definite longevity with this book. We received it as a gift and already plan to buy it as a gift for others as it's been such a hit.

I was not aware that there are so many varity,s of flames and related graphics. This is an excellent book to jump start your efforts. It also includes some great links to the many suppliers and artists that define the world of automotive art.

This is an excellent guide to painting flames for someone such as myself knew to airbrushing. I'm not what one would call artistic so the book is great in that it lays the steps out for someone more "left brain" dominant to follow.

This is a very inspirational book! great tutorials and very nice information about some general fields in custom painting. If you feel you like some flame works, you'll find this book leads you to flame almost anything around you... BEWARE! maybe you never stop!I suggest to read this book together with "How to paint your car" also from Motorbooks, this one first because maybe you'd like to start with some nice graphics before putting yourself on a whole car painting job.

This is a cute book. There are two things that caused me to give it three stars: 1) its size. When I think of a book made up of photographs, I tend to think of a large, glossy, sits-on-your-coffee-table sized book. 5" x 8" matte was a surprise. Yes, I should have paid more attention to the description, but a small book didn't cross my mind. 2) The location of the captions/information about the photographs. I understand not wanting to place type over a photograph that fills the page. However, 81 photos out of the 100 contained in the book had white/blank space either around the photograph or on the opposite page that could have contained the simple description that is given at the back of the book. i bought this as a gift for the woman who taught me to knit. she really enjoyed it. its a really cool look at knitting throughout history with pictures you really dont think of when you hear "knitting" --- the only thing we didnt really love is that all the discriptions are referenced in the back. i get the point to not take away from the aesthetic of the photo. but its a bit of a pain to have to flip through to the back to read about any of the photos. -- also, even though the size is listed. i failed to really pay much attention to that it the book is smaller than what i imagined. which is fine, just so if anyone is thinking the way i was, let it be know that it is not a very large book :)

This is, as has been said, a charming book. It shows knitting in social contexts over time, and I enjoyed looking at it that way. It is, however, a small book - less than 5.5" by 8", so the images are not large. Some are full page, others are snap shots that are a fair bit smaller than a full page. The photos are not, in general, particularly clear. If your interest is in details about the actual knitting, you may be disappointed, but it's a nice collection.

Not sure why so many give this one four and five stars nor what I was hoping for (maybe more text to accompany the photos?) but this was a total waste of money and time. Definitely not anything I would look at more than once. There are more and better pictures on Pinterest - and all for free.

I love this book. It is as unadulterated as knitting itself. The photos speak volumes about this craft. I had quit knitting in favor of quilting and given my supplies to my daughter, but now I want to go right back out and buy more needles and wool and be part of history again!

I like the photos but I did expect a coffee table book. The size IS in the description though so mostly my own fault for not paying attention. 5.2 x 0.6 x 7.9 inches

This is a little book full of charming vintage photos of people knitting. Wish the captions ere on the same page as the pictures rather than in a list a the back. It's a bit inconvenient to have to keep flipping back and forth.

This book of photos is wonderful! I have looked through it several times. Seeing so many stars from the past made it most enjoyable!

About the Author

Stephanie J. Coopman (Ph.D., University of Kentucky) is Professor of Communication Studies at San Jose State University. She served as department chair for five years and chair of the SJSU University Council of Chairs and Directors for three years. In addition to teaching public speaking since the start of her career, she has conducted numerous training sessions on public speaking and communication pedagogy. Seriously, most of this is common sense. The textbook is well written, but it is not worth $30 for an ebook rental. Either way, I got what I paid for, and it went into my Kindle library immediately.

I ordered the loose leafed version but got an actual book, but the book looks like it was chewed up by a dog. It should work for my class, but still not pretty to look at.
