Review

"At first glance, physics and music may not seem the most obvious of bedfellows, but these seemingly disparate fields have much in common. Part-time saxophonist and full-time theoretical cosmologist Stephon Alexander is especially well placed to comment on both and link the two together. Indeed, his book promises to reveal 'the secret link between music and the structure of the universe.' Interwoven with solid physics and personal anecdotes, the book does an admirable job of bringing together modern jazz and modern physics."-Physics World's Book of the Year 2016, Shortlist"I have long been a serious jazz fan and like to think of myself as a budding armchair cosmologist. So I'll forever be grateful to musician/physicist Stephon Alexander, who describes the profound ways in which notes and numbers are connected. Alexander chronicles the great thinkers who have explored these links in the past and shares his own journey in the two fields. He'll help you see how our awe-inspiring universe is on a never-ending, cosmological riff."-Felix Contreras, NPR, Best Books of 2016"Marvelous."-New Scientist"Music lovers are at high risk of being inspired by this exploration of the connections between music and physics.... Alexander elegantly charts the progress of science from the ancients through Copernicus and Kepler to Einstein (a piano-player) and beyond, making it clear that what we call genius has a lot to do with convention-challenging courage, a trait shared by each age's great musicians as well."-Keith Blanchard, Wall Street Journal"In the most engaging chapters of this book - part memoir, part history of science, part physics popularization and part jazz lesson - Dr. Alexander ventures far out onto the cutting edge of modern cosmology, presenting a compelling case for vibration and resonance being at the heart of the physical structure we find around us, from the smallest particle of matter to the largest clusters of galaxies.... His report on the state of research into the structure and history of the universe - his own academic field - makes for compelling reading, as does his life story."-Dan Tepfer, New York Times"Music and physics might seem like polar opposites, one having great emotional potency and the other being a cerebral subject of equations, theories and deductions. Both, however, benefit from improvisers - people who stand on the shoulders of giants, taking earlier triumphs and building on them to create something new. For me, analogies like these, which draw parallels between physicists and jazz musicians, are the most fascinating revelations in Stephon Alexander's book The Jazz of Physics.... The book's attempt to bring together modern jazz and modern physics strikes me as admirable.... It is an intriguing comparison, and it certainly seems fresher than drawing analogies between classical music and classical physics.... Time to put on some Coltrane and riff some new research ideas?"-Trevor Cox, Physics World"[Alexander] gives an engaging account of his uncertainties and worries as he made his way in the highly competitive world of theoretical physics, seeking to acquire the 'chops' needed to deal with the formidable mathematics of his day job along with those needed to solo on the sax after dark.... Mr. Alexander's rhapsodic excitement is infectious."-Peter Pesic, Wall Street Journal"[Alexander's] book, The Jazz of Physics, explores [the] resonance [between science and music] to a depth that far surpasses other works on the same concept." -New Criterion "Groundbreaking...[Alexander] He illustrates his points with colorful examples, ranging from the Big Bang to the eye of a galactic hurricane."-Down Beat "Using his own life as the baseline, Alexander, a professor of physics at Brown University, sweetly riffs on deep connections between music and cosmology.... Alexander's account of his own rise from humble beginnings to produce contributions to both cosmology and jazz is as interesting as the marvelous connections he posits between jazz and physics."-Publishers Weekly"In this loosely autobiographical meditation, Alexander explores resonances between music and physics in Pythagoras' 'music of the spheres,' Albert Einstein's love of music, Coltrane's love of Einstein, and his own ideas as a theoretical physicist and jazz saxophonist. It's a vast, cosmic theme that includes quantum mechanics, superstring theory, the Big Bang, the evolution of galaxies, and the process of scientific theorizing itself.... Alexander's enthusiasm for his subject is infectious."-Kirkus Reviews"This book could just as well be called The Joy of Physics because what leaps out from it is Stephon Alexander's delight and curiosity about the cosmos, and the deep pleasure he finds in exploring it. True to the jazz he loves so much, Stephon is an intellectual improviser riffing with ideas and equations. It's a pleasure to witness." -Brian Eno, artist, composer and producer"The Jazz of Physics is a cornucopia of music, string theory, and cosmology. Stephon takes his reader on a journey through hip hop, jazz, to new ideas in our understanding of the first moment of the big bang. It is a book filled with passion, joy and insight."-David Spergel, Charles Young Professor of Astronomy & Department Chair, Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University"A riveting firsthand account of the power of intuitive and unconscious in the process of scientific discovery. Being both top-notch physicist and jazz musician, Stephon Alexander has a unique voice. Listening to him, you will hear the music of the Universe."-Edward Frenkel, author of Love and Math"Stephon Alexander takes us along on his twinned quest to discover the fundamental principles of physics and of jazz performance and composition. He is a great story teller and he paints vivid portraits of the masters of music and science who guide him on his search, which leads to a revelation of a common pattern and symmetry in the universes created by John Coltrane and Albert Einstein. If you spend one evening of your life contemplating the relationship between art and science, spend it with this book."-Professor Lee Smolin, founding member of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and author of The Trouble with Physics"Is the universe a musical instrument that plays itself? It is according to Stephon Alexander, a string theorist who shares his journey from a crime ridden junior high school to the upper echelons of physics and jazz. Moving fluidly from T dualities to John Cage, he tells how his two worlds blended together like a stereoscopic vision-a sonic cosmos where Einstein and Coltrane naturally meet, and where intuition and improvisation are as important as technique. Whether he's hanging with Brian Eno or Brian Greene, Alexander never loses sight of the math or the melodies, never condescends to his reader but rather uses his own childlike awe and personal charm to take us into the details of chords and equations. It's impossible to resist following him as he 'solos with the equations of D-branes' on paper napkins in jazz clubs, searching for the eloquent underlying harmonies that brought the universe (and us) into being."-KC Cole, author of Something Incredibly Wonderful Happens and The Universe and the Teacup: The Mathematics of Truth and Beauty"Music, physics and mathematics have lived in tune since Pythagoras and Kepler, but Prof. Alexander's book creates a new and powerful resonance, coupling the improvisational world of Jazz to the volatile personality of quantum mechanics, and making the frontiers of cosmology and quantum gravity reverberate like in no other book."-João Magueijo, Professor of Physics at Imperial College London and author of Faster Than The Speed of Light"In this very creative work Stephon Alexander leads us through his remarkable journey from jazz musician to theoretical physics, from the music of the spheres to string theory."-Professor Leon N. Cooper, Laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physics"Stephon Alexander has written an entertaining and important book about how science is becoming more like improvised music. Young musicians and scientists will find a deeper way to connect with their work in its pages. There is also a message about scientific progress: It isn't just about a sterile quest to make a better equation, but also the struggle to build deeper connections between people and between us and the universe at large."-Jaron Lanier, author of Who Owns the Future?

I cannot say enough good things about this book. It was quite amazing to follow Dr. Alexander's journey to the world of physics through the lens of jazz. I have read review with people complaining about the book being autobiographical or even jumping subjects. That actually is what makes this book so interesting to read. I learned some new aspects of physics, it helped strengthen other elements of physics I had heard about in the past, and it was a pleasure to read about his journey into physics, starting with the first trip to the museum and seeing a display of Albert Einstein.I would highly recommend this book to those with a novice based love of physics, those who love both music and science, and as an amazing way to aspire children, teens, and young adults to reach for their goals in their own unique way. I love that his journey was his and not limited to a one way, boring, pre-charted road.

Although I'm a guitarist with over 40 years professional experience in jazz and other American musical idioms, I don't feel qualified to assess The Jazz of Physics by Stephon Alexander. Hence, the 3 star review, by which I mean my neutrality as to the book's qualities. The question needs to be asked for whom this book was written. A serious musician could not comprehend it fully without also having a thorough understanding of both physics and calculus. I have some college education, but unfortunately not those subjects.Chapter 8: The Ubiquity of Vibration contains several complex graphs and equations, for which it is assumed the reader understands all the math symbols used. I'm not sure what books I would need to study to understand it, but nearly all of Chapter 8 is incomprehensible to me. The book's notes don't explain the equations or the Fourier transform any more than the text does.I love the concept that the universe behaves like a musical instrument, but I have no understanding why the author believes this may be the case.If you are more musician than scientist or mathematician, you might want to read How Music Works by John Powell for a read geared more towards the general reader.

A unique and personal take on 'The Meaning Of It All' physics. Alexander's use of memoir to... hold on... I met Stephon Alexander in 2005 while doing research for a screenplay; he was at the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC). Since then I wrote a memoir in which Stephon appears. Here's a bit of it:...I need to explain why I think Stephon Alexander is a special humanbeing, and if you hang in you’ll see how this connects to other things. When we sat down for our interview at Stanford, the first thing I toldStephon was that I’m a dilettante. Stephon stopped me. “That word,” hesaid. “What does it mean?”“Dilettante?”“Yes. What does it mean?”I told him it means that I know just enough about theoretical physics tomake a fool of myself in talking to an actual theoretical physicist.“How do you spell it?”I didn’t really know. I told him there are some “l’s and “t”s but I didn’tknow how many of each, plus there is an “i” somewhere and at least one“e.” Stephon was nodding, taking this in, filing it away somewhere. Then I asked him why he became a theoretical physicist and he saidbecause he was angry at God.Hold on. Let me ask you something. Let’s say that for some reason you’rebeing interviewed because you have expertise at something. Someone, aHollywood screenwriter, say, shows up and you do a formal interview. And let’s say the interviewer starts out by saying something to the effectof how smart you are, but in doing so uses a word you’re unfamiliar with. Here’s the question: Would you stop him and ask what that word means?Neither would I.Why is that? Because our main concern would be how we’re perceived. This would be the case in any situation with a stranger, but especially inan on-the-record interview, and even more especially if the premise of theinterview is that we’re smart.Stephon did not care how he was perceived. Or, rather, he may havecared, but his need to know something, a truth about the world, minorthough it was, was more important. If people – you, say, plus me – worried less about how we’re perceived,we’d worry less about self-image (still another self word), too. Whichmeans we’d be less likely to believe untruths simply because they makeus feel more comfortable about ourselves. Please trust me on something:The belief in untruths is the primary reason why the world is so [screwed] up.In fact, all the reasons why the world is so [screwed] up depend on peoplebelieving untruths. I know that I’m right on this one thing.Stephon Alexander is not one of the reasons why the world is so [screwed] up,which is enough to make him special. In fact, that’s my definition of special,as in special human being. Someone who is not part of the problem of theworld being so fucked-up.And listen. Stephon Alexander knows some secrets of the universe. Trustme on another thing: That Stephon asked me what “dilettante” means andhow you spell it is as much a reason for his knowledge of some secrets of theuniverse as his astounding innate brain power, his intelligence. This angry-at-God thing. Stephon grew up in a poor section of the Bronx,New York. As a child he was confused by all the misery around him. Theconfusion led to anger at God, since he had been told that God createdEverything and Everything must include the misery all around him. Sohe wanted to understand how God could have done this. Stephon, havingbeen blessed with astounding innate intelligence, even as a young personsensed that he would not come to understand about God through studyingreligion or philosophy or anthropology. He was tempted by art, he told me,particularly the art of jazz music. But he decided to dedicate his life to physics, the area of it that looks into first causes. What happened in the beginning. If anyone ever comes close to a real understanding about God it willbe a physicist, someone like Stephon Alexander. It will not be a Popeor an ayatollah or a rabbi or a Buddhist in a monastery or some [screw]ballmother[etc] blabbing away on Sunday morning TV. The reason for thisis simple: Without knowing how things work—what causes what—there isno possibility of knowing anything else. It’s all just words strung togetherand circular reasoning and specious causation and made up stuff and othercrocks of [poop]. All of it.Another thing. That Stephon was tempted to dedicate his life to art, tojazz music, is significant also. In fact, Stephon does dedicate himself to jazzmusic, to playing it on a saxophone, when he’s not looking into first causes. To sum up: In seeking to understand God, Stephon Alexander looks intofirst causes and plays jazz music on a saxophone.I love that.Although he grew up in the United States, Stephon was born in theCaribbean, on an island. I believe that this heritage is part of what makesStephon special. The spirituality of his people. He told me a childhood storyabout his grandmother that gave me the shivers. The island on which Stephon was born is this island, by the way. The littleisland from which I write.#Anyway, it doesn't surprise me that Stephon has written a fascinating book on physics and Jazz music. Not at all. (That his unquestioning faith in Einstein's Relativity theories may be misplaced is a separate matter. Those interested should give Electric Universe theory a look, at thunderbolts.info.)

My Florence: A 70-Year Love Story, by Art Shay

Review

"Florence Shay was a force to be reckoned with, a marvelous, witty, beautiful and well-read lady whose husband Art loved her very much and took some pictures of her that pierce my heart: there she is, glorious Florence. I miss her (and her book shop, too). Art Shay’s photographs bring us into their family, so immediately and warmly that it is a little shocking and quite wonderful."—Audrey Niffenegger, author of The Time Traveler’s Wife"The photographs in Shay’s latest collection portray his late wife’s brimming effervescence in . . . [a] spirit of reverence and love "—Amy Danzer, New City"In 'My Florence' we encounter her pregnant with her first child, and later beaming proudly with their baby daughter Jane in her arms. We see her bringing home their youngest, Steve, greeted by three of their four children at home. . . . [I]t seems that for Art Shay the past really is prologue and continues to be present in the life of this prolific, insightful photographer."—Dorothy Andries, Chicago Tribune"The golden age of photojournalism may be long past, but the work of its giants . . . continues to amaze and inspire. Many Chicagoans may not realize that one of those giants, Art Shay, still walks among us. . . . These are . . . poignant images [of Florence] . . . vivacious and flirty in Las Vegas, hard at work at her book shop, in the latter stages of terminal illness."—Kevin Nance, Crain's Chicago Business

I actually had the privilege of meeting Florence Shay, and I know her husband Art for 38 years now. So I may be a biased reviewer, however I loved the book. It was so full of love and respect for this amazing woman. Art Shay has photographed world events, numerous racquetball tournaments (which is how we met), traveled the world, published books, had big shows, all kinds of fame and glory. But this little book is so sweet and intimate. I was really touched and will treasure it.

I loved it! What a wonderful love story! I had been waiting for it to come out! I am very happy with the little book!

Beautiful story wonderful photographyhistorical and a visual poetry

i used to work for this photographer's son, and florence was a real beauty! talented family :) gorgeous tribute :)

My Florence is a very personal story of Florence Shay, a "companionable, sexy, Jewish mother, elegant and always up to date, who blogged to 30,000 followers until her last days, the literary adviser to basketball players, governors, and rock stars, the loving, devoted wife; and resolute proponent of the written word." What makes the book unique is that Shay is an ordinary wife living an ordinary life around California and Chicago, 1940s to 2012. Her husband Art, whose resume includes a stint as Life magazine's youngest bureau chief and a career as a highly respected photojournalist, tells her story in images. Photographs of a life well-lived up until her death in 2012.At a slim 96 pages, I often wished for even more photographs than were presented. It is clear throughout what made photographer Art Shay an icon at Life Magazine - his images are the every day, the mundane, the everyday life. For photographers and photojournalists know, it is not about what's in the image, it's about the apogee of the moment at which the photographer clicks the shutter. Here, Shay beautifully captured the moments in wife Florence's life - her family, her pursuits, the memories they were making as they raised 5 children and then went on to grandchildren. The cover image is the first he ever photographed of the person who would be his life's companion.Cultural historians will no doubt appreciate the glimpses of mid century life in Chicago. From a brick row type home in Des Plaines, whose interior features ball clocks and slim legged tables. But also tidbits of life after World War II through to the turbulent 1970s. The images move from black and white to kodachrome color as Florence ages. Celebrity appearances in images by Eleanor Roosevelt, Studs Terkel, and Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins seem almost to disrupt the home glimpses - I kept wishing for even more glimpses of the ordinary life rather than the celebrity one.The Shays' may have lived a better life than many due to his work with Life (vacations in Hawaii in the 1970s, the Hacienda in Las Vegas in the 1960s) to have this be a book of the populist style. As well, there are interesting tidbits of the eras - images of briefcase and purse hidden cameras when Florence caught pictures of mobsters, for example. Or staged images of his family for Life articles. They create a bigger pictures of the Shays' life but I found them less interesting than the candid home images.I rate this four out of five stars because I honestly wanted more. There is some commentary but it is sparse and not every picture has commentary. Since a photojournalist is all about the moment, I loved the book the most when it was describing those moments and what prompted Shay to click the shutter when he did. There just wasn't enough of it.The images are somewhat chronological but do jump around quite a bit. Decades may pass in the blink of an eye, for example, and no matter how many images presented, it did feel like there are so many more that will never be seen that could have gone into this book.In all, a very personal story in which the life of a remarkable woman shines through brightly.Reviewed from an ARC.

Beaulieu art book and profile of the artist.

I was only disappointed I couldn't choose the cover color combination. Mine came and it is dark green - the hair is white with the dark green spots. Excellent book, wonderful and complete information, great shots of the art to look at!

I have always liked her work and followed it since the 60's!!Very free and interesting art work!!! Loved it!

High quality reproductions of her amazing work brings much joy. Good text. So happy I purchased this despite the price which seemed steep.

Wonderful color plates of all phases of her work. Very interesting text section about her life and influences on her work. A long and varied career of imaginative creations. I was not previously familiar with her work, but I now see her influence in many many other creative endeavors.

LOVE my beautiful Kusama book. Excellent condition and great price.

I think these books are great and the Amazon Service even better..many thanks regards John

Book is just as fabulously created as her artwork. Color is magnificent, text and commentary just right. A treasure to have!

Really cute book with great pictures. My 6 year old loves it and was so excited Little Golden books came out with Ghostbuster's books. These are appropriate for all ages and the ghost pictures are great. A must have for anyone who loves Ghostbusters or Golden Books. Note: There are some larger words so these are not ideal for beginner readers.

Reading your kids a bedtime story hasn't been this fun in a while. OG Ghostbusters story is great with awesome illustrations. 100% legit for the Ghostbusters fan. Follows the movie storyline and has a good amount to read per page. Reads through in about 7-10 minutes, depending on your style. My kids love this one

Little Golden Books have been a favorite for as long as I can remember! This one is a particular favorite because of the much loved Ghostbusters theme! I couldn't be more pleased to see a book so treasured by a little one! He's not afraid of no ghosts! Why? Because he takes his Ghostbusters book to bed with him every single night! Love the color pictures and story details!

My grandson loves the Ghostbusters. I at first just downloaded the sample of this book, but it stopped short of showing the Marshmallow Man, which is favorite part. He screams with joy when he turns the page and his favorite villain appears. Worth every penny!

This book is awesome! You take the classic Ghostbusters movie, make it kid appropriate, and wrap it up with a gold seal. It was perfect!

Cute book for my Ghostbusters-loving 5 year old son. Great illustrations and sums up the kids favorite parts of the movie. I accidentally bought two books and kept them both to keep one at his Grandparents house. Another classic "Little Golden book' to add to our collection! I've had the book for a little under a week and have been asked to read it to him every night since.

I had little golden books growing up and loved them! They were so easy to find in my bookcase because of the gold bindings. I bought these for my 6 year old nephew and he loved them. The words are big enough for him to read and the quality is great!

I'm a child of the 80s, so of course I purchased this book for my pre-schooler. A bit nervous at first about age appropriateness (why was I allowed to watch this film so young?!?) but it's absolutely perfect. My son even took the book to pre-school to share with his class (apparently four dudes who hunt ghosts is a mind blowing concept to a four year old). The teacher even enjoyed it. "I love this town!"

The Emperor: Downfall of an Autocrat, by Ryszard Kapuscinski

Amazon.com Review

Haile Selassie, His Most Puissant Majesty and Distinguished Highness the Emperor of Ethiopia, enjoyed a 44-year reign until his own army gave him the boot in 1974. In the days following the coup, the Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski traveled to Ethiopia and sought out members of the imperial court for interviews. His composite portrait of Selassie's crumbling imperium is an astonishing, wildly funny creation, beginning with the very first interview. "It was a small dog," recalls an anonymous functionary, "a Japanese breed. His name was Lulu. He was allowed to sleep in the Emperor's great bed. During various ceremonies, he would run away from the Emperor's lap and pee on dignitaries' shoes. The august gentlemen were not allowed to flinch or make the slightest gesture when they felt their feet getting wet. I had to walk among the dignitaries and wipe the urine from their shoes with a satin cloth. This was my job for ten years." (Well, it's a living.) Elsewhere, the interviewees venture into tragic or grotesque or downright unbelievable terrain. Kapuscinski has shaped their testimonies into an eloquent whole, and while he never alludes to the totalitarian regime that ruled his native Poland during the same period, the analogy is impossible to ignore.

I read this book in preparation for a trip to Ethiopia. It really helped me to see the country from a different perspective. As in the book, I found people that love and others that despise Haile Selassie. Besides, the stories told by some of the closest people to the emperor are sometimes amazing, especially seeing the struggle that Ethiopian people have lived and still live. Totally recommend the book!

The Emperor is so powerful that when he elevates someone to a new position, he changes their body language completely:First, the whole figure of a man changes. What had been slender and trim-waisted now starts to become a square silhouette. It is a massive and solemn square: a symbol of the solemnity and weight of power. We can already see that this is not just anybody’s silhouette, but that of visible dignity and responsibility. A slowing down of movements accompanies this change in the figure. A man who has been singled out by His Distinguished Majesty will not jump, run, frolic, or cut a caper. No. His step is solemn: he sets his feet firmly on the ground, bending his body slightly forward to show his determination to push through adversity, ordering precisely the movement of his hands so as to avoid nervous disorganized gesticulation. Furthermore, the facial features become solemn, almost stiffened, more worried and closed, but still capable of a momentary change to optimism or approval. (34)The man becomes old, he becomes slow, he becomes massive and solemn as he attempt to stifle his quirks to fit into that stagnant court atmosphere. Power sits heavily on his shoulders. All of these observations become ironic when one realizes, by reading through Kapucinski’s piece, that in fact the ministers spend most of their time not doing their jobs, but hanging around court just to catch the Emperor’s eye to indicate their “unshakable loyalty”. (50) And that, moreover, the Emperor doesn’t like his ministers to be good at their jobs, so that he “shined by contrast”. (33)Kapucinski doesn’t need to write a voluminous tome in order to convey what life was like under the repressive rule of Emperor Haile Selassie. Instead he chooses a few details that stick out in the mind: such as the specific way in which a new minister’s body posture changes upon his promotion to power. There is something about each of these images that causes the reader to pause and think, and remember them afterwards. Five Stars.

A masterpiece. Strictly speaking it is neither history, nor journalism, but it captures perfectly the insanity totalitarian rule. Every dictator thinks he is a benevolent dictator, and every idiot king thinks he is a genius. This book perfectly captures the flavor of Ethiopian political culture, and those observations as just as true today as they were in the 70's. It ranks up there with Catch 22 as a guide to political absurdity, and rule through gaslighting.

Nothing to dislike here except for the brutal treatment of the royal family which, though not perfect, served its people relatively well compared to autocratic leaders on the African continent. I was there to observe development increase among a wider population in the southwest territory along the Sudan border and am close to finishing a non-political, insider account of those activities from 1963 to the present.

Great book about the downfall of Selassie's autocratic regime in Ethiopia on 1974. One can easily find parallels with the way other dictatorships work and try to sustain themselves. The book is mostly made of impressions from people close to the Emperor and the regime. I don't think it's Kapuscinski's best book (maybe 'The Shadow of the Sun' or 'Travels with Herodotus' are?) but there is no doubt the reading is worth it.The Kindle edition has some minor typos (mainly split words). Nothing that makes the reading too uncomfortable.

The story of how (somehow) Haile Selassie comes to and maintains power. Another revealing, well documented and personal accounting of another African leader taking charge of his country after colonialism. Kapuscinski is undoubtedly the most reliable journalist of the central Africa experience. A must read.

I hate to write anything negative about this book because it is so highly original. The approach, that of relying upon interviews with former palace insiders, would be incredibly effective were it not for the fact that the author decided to embellish their descriptions. Had he not done so, this would be one of the all-time great descriptions of autocratic excess.Still, this description of life within the Ethiopian royal palace during the last days of the reign of Hailie Selassie (a hero in the West because of his successful opposition to the Italian invasion preceding World War II) provides a fine description of the sycophants, bullies, and idiots who hang around to lick up the slops as a totalitarian regime enters its final days.Well worth reading. If you like this book, you may be interested in The Ends of the Earth: A Journey at the Dawn of the Twenty-first Century by Robert D. A very interesting and different take on a history I followed in papers.

PEARLS BEFORE SWINE is the funniest comic strip in production. Every day is like opening a new gift from Stephan Pastis' wacky mind. This compilation of strips includes a number of hilarious comics about Rat's run for President, which are laugh out loud funny. The cover art is worth the price of the book alone. Another winner from Stephan Pastis.

Stephan Pastis is the emperor of fantastic puns and fun with puns! I believe I have every book and I enjoy them so much!

Again, Pastis has pounced on the pomposity of the President, but- there should be more L'il Guard Duck in the episodes.

The collection of strips is typically off the wall and hilarious. Stephan Pastis does a great job of amusing me with sometimes strange humor.

Another great Pearls book!

Husband loved it. All new comics

Hilarious! This guy nails every strip!

You either like this guys comics or you don't understand humor.

Praise for THE ADVENTURES OF SUPER DIAPER BABY"Pilkey's latest is replete with misspellings, pleasingly bad puns and the 'flip-o-rama' feature that slips some rudimentary animation into these preposterously good-humored pages." --PUBLISHERS WEEKLY"Children get a delicious thrill from reading forbidden and naughty things, and Pilkey has filled this niche for the emergent reader." --KIRKUSS

From the Author

Notes (from Pilkey.com)As everybody already knows, this book was really written by George and Harold's alter ego, Dav Pilkey. "I know this is going to sound like I'm totally insane, but George and Harold are very real characters to me. I guess it's because I based both of them on myself when I was a kid. So when I started working on this book, I needed to "become" George and Harold. In my imagination, I stopped being me, and sort of let George and Harold take over. I let them create the story they wanted, without worrying about spelling, or grammar, or moralistic plots which would please adults." -- Dav Pilkey Dav was also inspired by the home-made comic books he receives from kids every day. "The comics that kids send me often have poor grammar and misspelled words, and usually have bad guys who are disgusting in one way or another. But the amazing thing is that these comics are all made voluntarily. Nobody forces these kids to make comic books. They just do it for fun. And there's always something wonderful about that kind of unprompted creativity. I really tried to capture some of that energy in this book" -Dav Pilkey Fun Facts: 1. The lines that Billy's parents shout on page 66 ("Billy, don't be a hero!" "Don't be a fool with your life!") is the chorus to a song that was popular when Dav Pilkey was a kid. The song is called "Billy, Don't be a Hero" by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. 2. George and Harold were interviewed by "Disney Adventures" Magazine right after "The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby" was published. Click here to read their interview. 3. One morning when Dav was painting the illustrations in this book, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake shook the Pacific Northwest. His whole house rocked back and forth for almost 30 seconds. Lots of stuff got broken, but remarkably, his paint didn't spill. 4. "The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby" was challenged (and almost banned) from a school library in the spring of 2003.

It was not long ago that I treated an irrepressible 8 year old boy at the children's hospital where I worked. This kid was something else. He was smart, articulate and bubbly. We got to talking about books, and I told him about Roald Dahl's 'The Twits' (one of my long-standing favourites by that author). "Have you read Captain Underpants?" he asked me. Then he proceeded to regale me with the story of Mr Krupp and Harold and George. I was intrigued. At the follow-up appointment, my patient brought me one of his own copies of Captain Underpants, so I could see what he was going on about. I promised him the next time he came for an appointment, I would have read the whole series. His mom told me later, "You're the only doctor here who's willing to read Captain Underpants. You're doing pretty well."And here I am. I read Captain Underpants and I thoroughly loved it. It is one of the most banned books in libraries in the US, which probably goes to show you that it is extremely effective at engaging its target audience. I laughed in delight, reading the adventures of Harold and George, and remembered all the childhood hours I spent with my brother thinking up practical jokes that landed us in trouble again and again. I remembered the stink bombs, the fart spray, the whoopee cushions, and simply remembered what it was like to be a kid.I have read a few of the reviews that express concern that the series encourages defiance of authority, but I have several points to make in response. Firstly, the authority figures in the book should be challenged. Quite frankly, if kids had to attend a school where the principal punished naughty behaviour by making them clean his house and mow his lawn, I would mount a protest. That is a highly inappropriate punishment. Secondly, I seriously doubt that reading Captain Underpants is going to turn a kid into a criminal or miscreant of the justice system. If you really looked at the kinds of things that turn kids into criminals, reading books is not one of them. Thirdly, Captain Underpants was wonderfully imaginative. It turns mundane things into objects of great potential (nefarious or otherwise). I love that it encourages kids to dream and imagine, and not be confined by the dictates of our time. If not for challenging ideas, we wouldn't know that the earth revolved around the sun, or that gravity makes apples fall to the ground, or that spores from a fungus (penicillin) could be critical in treating infection.Let's let kids enjoy being kids. Heaven knows, growing up isn't much fun. And for the love of all that is cotton-y and pre-shrunk, if they love the Captain, let them read it.

Around when I was in third grade and all the other kids were reading these books, I was very hesitant to read these books and didn't want anything to do with them. About four years later I saw the first trailer for the Captain Underpants movie and didn't think it would really be worth seeing. A few months later I started watching the trailer nonstop and searched YouTube for every possible scene in the movie. A couple of days later I decided that before I saw the movie itself that I should read as many of the books I could so that I wouldn't have to handle the wait much longer. Ten minutes later I finished the first epic novel.I bet you're wondering why my opinion on these novels changed so suddenly. You see, once I saw a trailer for the movie saying that the critics thought it was heartwarming, far more emotional then you'd ever believe, and about the power of friendship and imagination, I immediately fell in love with it. I became absolutely hypnotized by every trailer I saw on TV just like how Mr. Krupp became hypnotized by George's and Harold's ring. I then saw that it got 85% by Rotten Tomatoes and was astonished. The main reason why I fell in love with this franchise in the first place was because I thought it could possibly teach me something about friendship and what it means to truly have a best friend at your side at all times, since I didn't currently have a best friend at my side at all times like everyone else in school did. When I first read this book, I couldn't stop smiling at how close George and Harold seemed to be and just how clever they were with all their pranks. Overall, I don't think I'll ever stop reading these books anytime soon and that I'd recommend it to every child out there and not just the ones in the lower grades. I mean, I was thirteen when I first started reading these books and I'm even a girl! Also, whatever you do, don't be hesitant to read these books no matter how many there are! Trust me, you'll be surprised and humored by what you read in these novels.

This book is great! As a 12 year old, I'm obviously pretty old to be reading this book, but when I was younger, I read this book, and it definitely helped me love to read. I think that this book falls in the 3rd-4th grade age level. Some of the other reviews said that this book would make you hate school and make you say potty talk and stuff. Some even said it woul make your kid a "juvinile delinquet"... (not sure if I spelled that correctly). Anyway, I'm proud to say that (though I can't help the potty talk, but what type of kid can?) I have sraight A's, and I am very good at sports, though I don't know how that has much to do with anything!Anyway, I think that the main characters, George and Harold, are very clever and funny. They must be good at english and art too if they make comic books. I wish my school had signs where you can switch around the letters! Read the book and you will know what I'm talking about.Mr. Krupp is the perfect villian. He actually turns into "the greatest superhero of all time" with a 3-D Hypno Ring. Now the villian has turned into a hero, gets into lots of trouble, and George and Harold have lots of adventures.New villians show up through the series, and George and Harold fight them off. The wisecracks make this book halarious. There is also some random grown-up humor! The stories are not too complicated, and the comics are supercool! As a kid, I suggest to other kids to read this book. You will laugh. If you don't want to act like a kid, if you want to be all grown-upy, I don't know what's wrong with you, but I think that this book is totally worth reading. If you are 8 years old or 100, you will still love this book so much!!Wow, I must admit I'm proud of that last speech!
