I was so nervous waiting for the editors to finish up Red Mountain Rising that I had to do something all-consuming with my time. Since the beginning of The Red Mountain Chronicles, Margot has come alive in my head in a wildly vivid way. If you’re a fan of Boo Walker's Red Mountain series, you’re sure to enjoy this prequel that introduces the eccentric Margot! Walker’s novella stands entirely on its own and is a pleasure to read - even if you’re unfamiliar with the Red Mountain series.While I couldn’t say that I necessarily related to Margot's passive aggressive nature, I certainly rooted for her throughout the entire story and couldn’t wait to find out what other crazy schemes she’d concoct to release her “pressure valve” while trying to save her marriage.This book is the perfect escape and I love how Walker has the ability to create and develop his characters in a way that makes you fall in love with them.

Since I've read the Red Mountains books, I was excited to read this prequel and learn more about Margot. It was fascinating to read the "story behind the story". In the Red Mountain books, the reader is told how Margot ended up in Washington State, but never given specific details. A Marriage Well Done gives the details, and they are fascinating ones!!!!! In some ways, I wish I read this first because I would have seen Margot as the warrior she really is and I would have appreciated her new life more than when I read Red Mountain.Boo Walker's writing is superb. His characterizations are spot on, the plot moves at just the right speed, and his ability to write dialogue, accurate. He has a way of telling a story that a lot of writers lack. He doesn't over-do the descriptions, but the reader still gets a true sense of the story, the scenery, and the emotions of the characters. Some authors excel in one area, but miss the mark in others. Mr. Walker hits them all.I absolutely loved this book, as I've loved the other books I've read by Boo Walker. This is an awesome read!!!!!

I was fortunate enough to read Walker's suggestion of reading "A Marriage Well Done" prior to starting the Red Mountain series. I followed that suggestion and was pleased to have the background information as I read the R.M. series. The story was well developed and set the tone for arrival of the reader at Red Mountain. I've read the three books of this "trilogy" or the the Red Mountain series and am now on Low Country Punch. I've enjoying having found Walker's work!

Boo's writing makes you feel like you are having a real conversation with Margot. Almost like two friends sitting together talking about life. This book reveals the whys and hows of Margot going to Red Mountain. You laugh, cringe and want to see her succeed and be happy. Lots of great moments in the book. I love all of the Red Mountain Series!

I really did devour the pages of this book and I'll tell you why at the expense of exposing my female instincts. Margot is a woman who barely maintains her sanity and survives a a crumbling marriage by wicked imagination. In the midst of our New England, winter, I found a book to snuggle up to for not enough nights of wicked pleasure. She has a friend in me, this Margot. A Broadway ex, her lust for a passionate marriage accompanied by the perfect meal consumes her. Do we want her marriage to succeed? Hell no, where is the fun in that? I wonder if others are as satisfied as I am with the ending of this chapter in the life of Margot. I ordered Mr. Walker's Red Mountain the night before finishing this delectable slice of life and read chapter one this morning. (Hey, Boo, I am writing this while our 2010 DoubleBack cab from Walla Walla eats some air. In the background Art Tatum croons. Keep 'em coming, Boo.

I recently discovered this author.... and read about his novels.... and saw that this was a prequel to the Red Mountain series.... I love watching characters develop and really getting into their lives when reading, so I got all of these books on my Kindle - then read them in order. A Marriage Well Done is a great story - and does a good job getting you hooked into these characters lives.... I spent most of the novel wondering what was wrong with this marriage... and then moved right on to the Red Mountain series. Impressed with how well a male author captured this female perspectives of the novel too. Highly recommend Boo Walker!

It is easy to see how Margot loses herself in the fight to keep her life as it is and then wonder if that is what she really wants after all. This book is not only a great character study but also gives us the back story for Margot, one of the central characters of the Red Mountain Chronicles. Margot’s journey takes many twists and turns and prompts us to ask ourselves, “how far would I go?”. So, settle in and enjoy the journey, it’s never bland and always richly satisfying😊

This was my first book to read by Boo Walker! Was I surprised! I was hooked! So glad Amazon picked his books up. I was fortunate to have discovered "A Marriage Well Done" as a prequel. I wish more writers would introduce their main characters in this way. You will not be bored!!! Humor is threaded throughout this very real character development. I couldn't wait to read Red Mountain and was not disappointed. 5 stars!

Ended up throwing it away even after I covered Trunps face with the stickers. The quotes weren’t funny enough - would work better has a small desk tear away calendar with just ridiculous quotes. Not even worth it as a gag gift.

I bought this as a gift, and the recipient spent quite a bit of time looking through it. He really enjoyed that it came with stickers.

All the details are there. His description of his transit of "pirate alley" is fascinating and the trip up the Red Sea and through the Suez was unique. By the end of the story, I was sorry to bid adieu to Henry Holt. The Appendix with tips for voyagers is useful. Missing are colorful descriptions non-engineers provide. Missing from those colorful stories are the technical matters Henry Holt provides. It would be terrific if an edition is provided some day that incorporates his presentations to Island Packet's newsletter.At first, it was hard to get into this book. Sticking with it was worthwhile. The ending is very nice. I sensed that the author departed on a quest and found his treasure. I came to appreciate the rather technical view of a world cruise in an Island Packet 350.

These, in addition to Captain Cooke’s daily log, are my most favorite books to read, and Henry Holt does not disappoint. He carefully describes places, resources, charts, and guides he used to make his course across the oceans. Especially endearing are his encounters with Murphy’s Laws, and the simple details he describes to over-come them ~ like clean out the fuel filter, eh? And a couple of good recipes, even. Mental note: Canned cashews, and pens make great gifts! Good read, couldn’t put it down until done. Thank you, Henri ~

Mr Holt is clearly an experienced and well organised yachtsman, who circumnavigated the world and seemed to enjoy his journey. He encountered plenty of difficult weather and coped with it well . At 73 and living in a country with no seaboard, I just wanted to see how he got on.You could read this story at various levels but it reads just fine as an interesting travel story.Bon voyage!

The author writes of his journey around the world in a sailboat. I opened the book with some eagerness, as I have read a number of other authors who have done the same thing. I came away a bit disappointed. The writer didn't put a lot of detail into the day to day life aboard ship during looking passages, which was where my appetite lay. His accounts of time spent ashore at his ports of call made up for it. Good book.

Although I admire anyone who has circumnavigated in a sailboat, this book is nothing but a poorly written travelogue. It is choppy and skips around. There are much better written books on this subject. Save your money, don't buy this one.

I wrote a review of this book (Around the World in Six Years) without really looking closely at the title. I was thinking it was one of James Baldwins books about his two circumnavigations. I found Baldwins books were about sailing but they more than that on many different levels. The author seems to have keen insights into the human condition and the forces that blindly keep us within a very limited view of the horizon we call reality.Around the World in Six Years was interesting but seemed to me much less subtle and insightful than the Baldwin books. It seems to me that sailing in poverty creates a much different perception of "the journey".

He gets rather loose with his flashbacks and his timelines, so you're not always sure where or when you are. But his travels are very enjoyable, and so is his recounting. Hard to believe he's 70 years old.

Henry provides detail and storylines for his solo quest for a circumnavigation. He shares the trials and tribulations of sailing the open sea and the daily grind of maintenance aboard a sailboat. Great adventure.

On March 2, 2007, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)—an American organization that fights for civil rights and justice—presented a special award to a rock star. His name was Paul Hewson, but everyone called him Bono. He was being honored for the work he had done to raise money for the poor and sick, especially in Africa.   When Bono took the stage, he wore a dark suit and the oversize sunglasses he was famous for. His band, U2, was one of the most successful groups in music history. They played all over the world to sold-out stadium crowds. They’d won twenty-two Grammy Awards. Their records had sold millions of copies. They had fans everywhere they went.   But it didn’t start out that way. Bono was born an ordinary boy in the Irish city of Dublin, where people who went to Catholic churches did not always get along with people who went to Protestant churches. Bono asked himself what God meant in a world where people suffered and wars were fought. He had taken all his questions and doubts and put them into song lyrics. When Bono took the stage, he didn’t talk about rock and roll. He talked about people who had nothing. People who were suffering. People who needed help. And he talked about one of the most important forces in his life: God. After all his years of questioning, Bono had learned one thing for sure: God wanted people to help one another.   “The poor are where God lives,” Bono said. “God . . . is with the poor. And God is with us, if we are with them.” Bono lived the kind of glamorous life he could only dream about as a boy. He had become a star. But once he had that life, he discovered there were more important things he needed to do. Not for himself, but for the world.   Chapter 1: Dublin     Paul David Hewson was born in Dublin, the capital city of Ireland, on May 10, 1960. His parents were Bob and Iris Hewson. He had one brother, Norman, who was seven years older. His father, Bob, worked for the post office.    Bob and Iris were both Christian, but they were different kinds of Christians. Bob was Catholic, and Iris was Protestant. In Dublin, it was very unusual for Catholics and Protestants to marry. The two groups did not get along. In Northern Ireland, fighting between Catholics and Protestants often became violent. Even as a young boy, Paul wondered why Christianity, which taught that people should love one another, made people hate one another.   Paul did believe in fighting for some things. On his first day of school, a boy bit one of Paul’s friends. Paul shoved the bully into a nearby railing!   When Paul got a Batman costume, he walked around his neighborhood telling everyone he was going to fight crime. Some older boys laughed at him. They pulled his Batman mask down over his eyes so he couldn’t see anything.    The school that Paul went to was for Protestant children. He and his brother went to a Protestant church on Sundays with their mother while their Catholic father waited outside.   As Paul got older he started to think school was boring. Sometimes he didn’t go at all. He just walked around the city of Dublin. His parents started to worry about his grades. When Paul was twelve, a new school opened near his house. It was called Mount Temple Comprehensive School.    It was different from other Dublin schools because it accepted all kids—Protestant and Catholic, boys and girls. The students at Mount Temple didn’t wear uniforms, which was very unusual in Ireland. Paul’s parents thought this new school might be a good place for him.   Paul liked Mount Temple. He got to wear different styles of clothes and became more confident. He made friends with other students, both boys and girls.   When he was twelve, Paul started playing chess with Norman and his father. He fell in love with the game. He wanted to play it all the time. When he heard about an international chess competition in Dublin, he entered even though he was only twelve. He was the youngest person in the whole tournament, so he stood out among all the other players. He liked the attention, even though he didn’t win.    When he wasn’t playing chess, Paul was often borrowing his brother’s records. He liked a lot of popular performers, including David Bowie, the Beatles, and Led Zeppelin. He also liked Rory Gallagher, who happened to be Irish. There weren’t many rock stars who were Irish. When Bono finally shopped for his very first record, he bought John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s song “Happy Xmas (War is Over).” It was a Christmas song asking the world to end all wars.   Even though he didn’t live in Northern Ireland, Paul was still very aware of the Troubles there. That war was very close to home.   On September 10, 1974, when Paul was fourteen years old, his mother died. She hadn’t been sick, so it was a complete shock to everyone. Iris had collapsed at her own father’s—Paul’s grandfather’s—funeral. Suddenly she was gone. Paul, his father, and his brother were left alone.

About the Author

Born in Jackson County, Michigan, in 1900, Holling Clancy Holling graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1923. He then worked in a taxidermy department of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and spent time working in anthropology under Dr. Ralph Linton. During this period, he married Lucille Webster and within a year of their marriage accepted a position as art instructor on the first University World Cruise, sponsored by New York University. For many years, Holling C. Holling dedicated much of his time and interest to making books for children. Much of the material he used was known to him first hand, and his wife, Lucille, worked with him on many of the illustrations.

This book has it all! My 7 year old daughter was equally interested in the plight of Minn and the scientific diagrams in the margins. I highly recommend this for both boys and girls. This is one of the best science meets storytelling books you will find.

My boys loved Minn. And to be honest, I really did, too. It is like a science lesson and a geography lesson and a small history lesson all in one book. This isn’t a sit and read all the way through in one sitting kind of book. I love the beautiful artwork and sketches. I added activities along the way and turned it into an event. We learned a lot that we didn’t know from Minn.

This enchanting children's book gives an inside look at the life of a snapping turtle. You will forever have a love for turtles after sharing this book with your kids!!!!

You have to be familiar with this book to know how truly fascinating it is for older children (and adults). It is an oldie but goodie, full of drawings and maps to accompany the tale of the turtle. Every child even vaguely interested in nature should have this book for their very own.

My kids are working through Holling's books right now as part of a geography program. Loads of factual information about the historical times, geography details and nature facts, yet still keeps the kids asking for more. I like that each page has a full color, full page illustration and each chapter is one page long. - makes it easy to break into pieces.

Wonderful story of a turtle traveling down the river. A classic I read in 4th grade in the 50's. Get it for your animal-loving child.

Great! My son needed this for an English class. Nice large book with great pictures and good size text.

I found this a difficult read but rewarding. I guess I'm used to reading lower level books but this one is rich in vocabulary and language. I thought it would be too hard as I was reading it to my daughter but she was able to excitedly tell me back what I had just read to her and has referred back to the story and title of the book often. :) Happy Mom
