Amazon has the bad habit of lumping reviews of multiple editions of a book without regard as to author/editor or publisher, to the detriment of the buyer's choosing an edition, so I write to make a few comments on the 984,562 editions of "Paradise Lost" listed for purchase. I have used the titles as listed by Amazon to help find the editions I refer to, and, with the exception of the books by Kastan, Lanzara, and BookCaps, the ones I discuss below are ones I own and am familiar with. The version with an introduction and comments by Pullman has text that is large and readable, line numbers and some nice illustrations, taken from the first illustrated edition, published in 1688. It is a nice copy for those who want just the text of the poem. The text is based on Stephen Orgel's 2008 Paradise Lost (Oxford World's Classics) which has been modernized presumably with respect to capitalization, spelling and punctuation. The comments by Pullman are worthwhile, but, while he may be a very good writer, he is not a scholar of Milton. Unlike Orgel, there are no annotations or notes to explain Milton's often arcane language and allusions. For readers seeking annotated versions, I suggest the following. The ultimate edition of Milton Alastair Fowler's Milton: Paradise Lost: it has been called the Bible of Milton scholars; one review I saw called it suitable for graduate students majoring in Milton. It is one of the few available based on the first edition of "Paradise Lost", published in 1667, but Fowler states that it also includes the additions made in the second edition of 1674 --- the version that most of today's editors use. Know that Fowler has produced a very, very scholarly version with many, many notes, sometimes to the point that they leave only two or three lines of the poem on the page, so I strongly urge using the "Look Inside" feature before deciding to buy it. I recommend Fowler's 1998 Milton: Paradise Lost (2nd Edition) edition in used paperback ---- reissue in 2006 edition with a new cover and much higher price. The blurb from the publisher on the Pullman webpage misleads the reader by mentioning "This is the first fully-annotated, old-spelling edition ..." It ain't (as the small print says). I can't find the actual book this blurb refers to, there are several that might be the one mentioned. One such version, with very favorable recommendations, is Barbara K. Lewalski's 2007 Paradise Lost that reproduces the original language, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and italics of the 1674 text. Its annotations are on the same page. Again, I would again urge potential buyers to "Look Inside."(Incidentally, I was able to find a .pdf copy of it online).Another annotated edition, again with those on the same page, that sticks close to the original 1674 text (but with some minor modernization) is Merritt Y. Hughes' Paradise Lost (Hackett Classics), first published in 1935, and revised in 1962. It is advertised as one popular with college professors for their classes, whatever that may mean. From what I gather, Fowler has replaced Hughes as the scholarly version to use.The edition by Hughes was taken in 2003 by David Scott Kastan (Paradise Lost (Hackett Classics)) and edited more extensively, again with the annotations on the same page. Incidentally, Kastan's comments on how he edited, along with comments on any editor's choices when dealing with Milton, are well worth reading, and can be found under "Textual Introduction" using the "Look Inside" feature. I urge reading them to understand how and why there are so many different editions of Milton.Yet another annotated edition that comes close to the original is by John Leonard's Paradise Lost (Penguin Classics). The ad for this version states that the text has been modernized to the degree of reducing some capitals and italics, and correcting the spelling and some punctuation. It is annotated, but not to the degree of Fowler --- but the notes are at the back of the book rather than the bottom of the page as seems customary and which I personally find difficult to use because of constantly having to flip between pages. Again, I would urge potential buyers to "Look Inside."There are many other scholarly editions available in addition to the ones I have mentioned here, including one online at the John Milton Reading Room at Dartmouth College. For those who might like a less challenging version of "Paradise Lost", I suggest BookCaps "translation" (Amazon's words, not mine) Paradise Lost In Plain and Simple English or at an even less difficult level, Joseph Lanzara's John Milton's Paradise Lost In Plain English: A Simple, Line By Line Paraphrase Of The Complicated Masterpiece. Should those prove too difficult, there might be somewhere a copy by Classics Illustrated comics, although a search by Google turns up nothing --- perhaps they never published one.Since each edition of "Paradise Lost" has its strengths and weaknesses, how does the buyer go about selecting an edition for purchase? To me, it's rather like buying a car --- ultimately based upon personal preference, but in this case, rather than engine and body style, determined by the way the editor has modified Milton's language and added annotations, and their degree of adherence to his original language --- some editors produce as little modernization as possible to retain Milton's original meter and rhythm for reading aloud, while others try for a more modern sound. I would suggest using the "Look Inside" feature, to see what the editor has done, to help making a decision.Whichever edition you buy, may you find great enjoyment in reading what I consider the greatest epic poem in the English language --- although you might agree more with what Donald Sutherland's character, Jennings, had to say about it in the movie "Animal House": "Now what can we say about Milton's "Paradise Lost"? It's a very long poem. It was written a long time ago, and I'm sure a lot of you have difficulty understanding exactly what Milton was trying to say. ..... Don't write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring too. He's a little bit long-winded, he doesn't translate very well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible."

I have three editions of Paradise Lost—Alastair Fowler's, Scott Elledge's and David Kastan's—, and this is definitely the most suited for my object and needs. David Kastan undertook a throughout update and revision of Merritt Y. Hughes' praised notes to Paradise Lost, and, although I haven't yet read Hughes' original work, I'm inclined to think that Kastan lives up to his illustrious predecessor. This edition includes a fine introduction to the poem, a glossary of uncanny words found in it, copious notes on historical, mythological and biblical allusions, and commentaries on Milton's style and poetics (they are neither as extensive nor as "scholarly" as Mr. Fowler's notes, but I find them more straightforward and elucidative to the average reader). Truly a work worthy of Milton's epic.

Milton is a genius, but the introduction and commentary on the poem are atrocious. It reminds me of Chesterton's comment about John and Revelation: "Though St. John the Evangelist saw many strange monsters in his vision, he saw no creature so wild as one of his own commentators."A far more helpful guide to Paradise Lost is Leland Ryken's volume in his series Christian Guides to the Classics. The detail is not as granular, but it's a far more reliable commentary on the poem itself.

I am a huge fan of Paradise Lost itself, but I want to confine this review to the Kindle edition of the Dover Thrift Editions. The Kindle edition has the text of the poem with straightforward formatting. Line breaks were consistent with what you would expect from print edition. There are no line numbers, but I have yet to see a kindle book with line number in poetry. My biggest complaint is that the footnotes, of which there are many, are not linked into the text, making them practically useless in the Kindle edition. It is difficult to switch back and forth between two locations without links, especially when you are not sure what part of the text will have a footnote. So, 5 stars for Paradise Lost, but just 3 stars for the Kindle edition. I would try and find one with linked footnotes.

The best way to read one of the foundational classics of the Western world is to take a class at a university from a professor who specializes in Milton and baroque English authors. The second best way is to buy an edition like this one and read everything between the covers. Paradise Lost plumbs deeply the Greeks, Romans, the Bible and other religious and secular literature. In addition, it is a commentary on the English monarchy and the storm that overtook it with the execution of Charles I in 1649. Milton played a role in that drama, and it is embedded in Paradise Lost. By the time he started writing, a restoration was afoot, and Milton had to be careful not to indict himself for his enemies, who were looking for an excuse to arrest him. In other words, to simply read only the surface story is to miss almost everything, though the story itself is wonderfully told.I read the Kindle edition. That made it easy to pop from text to notes as they came up, deepening my understanding, but a paper book with a couple of bookmarks would be almost as easy. Paradise Lost is the work of a believer, and if you are a believer not afraid to read outside the Bible, your efforts will be rewarded. If you are a lover of literature, as I am, this is the mother lode!Paradise Lost is written in verse. This version modifies the English for modern readers. Even so, it will be a project. Set goals, stick with it, and you will be rewarded. I came to look forward to my nightly reading. My goal was 100 lines a night. Usually, though, I went over. If you've ever wanted to read one of the big ones, read Paradise Lost. It's not a classic just because bookish scholars like it!

Ignore the other review, this book is written by Rick Riordan, and is a very entertaining read. It helps offer insight into the asgardian universe and adds more story to the characters. Definitely worth the money, especially while waiting for the hammer of Thor.

This was so funny! I loved every page ! It's like the Greek gods and goddess book , only a lot more funny with interviews with some of the Norse gods ! Great lines and a little look into the next Magnus chase book!

Another entertaining Rick Riordan companion book. This is set up as the handbook newly deceased heroes would be receiving upon entering Valhalla. It's tone is humorous and light-hearted, everything we would expect from a Riordan book. We're given a brief overview of Norse deities, mythical beings, and mythical creatures. This book doesn't go super in-depth with any of the topics, but I found that the information provided was just right for what you'd need to enhance your enjoyment and understanding of the Magnus Chase series.Guide to the Norse Worlds was published shortly before the second Magnus Chase book (Hammer of Thor), and I think that's an appropriate time to read it. You could probably actually read it before even starting the series - it would help you get into Norse mythology a bit before you jump into book one. I don't think there are any spoilers for book one; it is literally a brief handbook of Norse mythology, and Magnus Chase (or the events of book one) are not actually mentioned at all.Overall - this was a very handy, entertaining companion book. Not a full 5 stars only because it is rather brief, and there's not a ton of new information that couldn't be gleaned from reading the first Magnus Chase book. But enjoyable, nonetheless, and a helpful guide for those not familiar with Norse mythology prior to reading the Magnus Chase series.

I have just started reading the book. So far it is entertaining.

Perfect guide to The Sword of Summer. I actually read this prior to reading The Sword of Summer and it was extremely helpful to have a little background knowledge before I dove into the book. Great read on its own as well.

what a great companion book. super easy to understand, little funny too. first rate for someone who loves the series and his books!

Love his work...he doesn't disappoint. Another great informational work. He has a way of telling a story that makes you keep reading

I found this to be interesting, informative and fun. I really enjoyed the fact that he included a pronunciation guide at the end. Those Norse words are hard to pronounce. I recommend Magnus Chase: Hotel Valhalla Guide to the Norse Worlds.

Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor's Story

From School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—Sachiko Yasui was just six years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on her hometown of Nagasaki. On August 9, 1945, she went from playing house with her friends to burying them. Yasui also lost a brother that day and would lose many more family members because of radiation sickness. Growing up, she was ostracized for her status as hibakusha, a bomb survivor. Despite her trauma and the bullying she faced, Yasui endured. She sought out inspiration from the likes of Helen Keller, Mohandas Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. Their works allowed her to make peace with the events in her life. Stelson recounts hearing Yasui speak at a ceremony to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This event would spark a long and intimate process in which Stelson repeatedly met with and interviewed Yasui in order to tell her story. Frequent historical notes provide context to the events happening in the narrative: Japan's role in World War II, the issue of racism in the war, President Truman's ultimatum, the effects of radiation sickness, the U.S. occupation of Japan after the war, and more. Back matter includes a glossary of Japanese terms used in the book and detailed maps of where events took place. VERDICT This sensitive and well-crafted account of a Nagasaki bomb survivor is an essential addition to World War II biography collections for middle school students.—Deidre Winterhalter, Niles Public Library, IL

"As Fat Man hurled toward the city of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, Sachiko Yasui, 6, was playing house. She ducked for cover, awaking hours later just 'half a mile from the [bomb's] hypocenter,', buried beneath mountains of debris, her mouth clogged with ash. Stelson first heard Sachiko speak in August of 2005. From 2010–15, Stelson traveled to and from Nagasaki, conducting a series of five interviews with the singular Sachiko. The result is a story of staggering hardship and extraordinary resolve. In it, Stelson outlines the plight of Sachiko, her family, and other hibakusha ('explosion-affected people'), from the Yasuis' lengthy trek to safety in nearby Shimbara and decimating radiation sickness, to the grueling restoration of a barren city. The narrative is further supplemented by two-page educational tidbits, interspersed throughout. Here, Stelson addresses the Japanese government, Emperor Hirohito and prime minister Hideko Tojo, internment camps, the U.S.'s stifling occupation of Japan, and 'long-term effects of radiation.' With Sachiko forever in the foreground, readers learn of her grievous loss, devotion to education, regard for peace (and its devotees: Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Helen Keller), and her fairly recent decision to give voice to her experiences. Sachiko and her story, much like the resilient Nagasaki camphor trees she so admires, are an indelible force. Luminous, enduring, utterly necessary."―starred, Booklist (Journal)"Caren Stelson's 'Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor's Story' presents with equal clarity the devastation of the atomic bombing on one small girl. Six-year-old Sachiko was playing outside with friends half a mile from the hypocenter when the bomb fell on Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945. Her four friends died instantly, but all of Sachiko's family except her 2-year-old brother survived the initial explosion. Within days one brother died of radiation sickness and another from infection. Sachiko, her sister Misa, her mother and her father all suffered terribly from radiation sickness; Misa died of leukemia without ever being strong enough to attend school.Despite their shattered lives, extreme poverty and desolation, Sachiko's father spoke to her of peace: 'Hate only produces hate.' He taught her about Mohandas K. Gandhi and about Helen Keller, who visited Nagasaki in 1948. As hibakusha, or 'explosion-affected people,' Sachiko and her parents remained in the mushroom cloud's shadow: Her father died of liver cancer, and Sachiko herself overcame thyroid cancer but had to work hard to regain the ability to speak. She worked as an accountant and studied the words of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. As the 50th anniversary of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki approached, Sachiko found she had something to say. For the next 20 years she traveled in North America and Japan, spreading a message of peace.Caren Stelson met Sachiko Yasui in Minneapolis in 2005 and made five trips to Japan to interview her. While the book contains historical notes, informational sidebars, photographs and maps, most of the narrative is Sachiko's account, magnetic and chilling in its simplicity. Stelson lets Sachiko become the hero of her own story; her quiet survival is an inspiring trajectory of redemption. Like McCormick, Stelson has created a book that is both personal and universal, both thoroughly researched and real."―The New York Times (Newspaper)"The result of extensive interviews with Nagasaki atomic bomb survivor Sachiko Yasui, Stelson's sensitively crafted account spans fifty years of Yasui's life, starting in August 1945 when the bomb was dropped (she was six years old) and ending in August 1995, when Yasui agreed to speak publicly about her experiences for the first time. Stelson structures her narrative around Yasui's decades-long struggle to find the courage to share her traumatic story with others; her eventual decision to finally speak up―'What happened to me must never happen to you'―is movingly foreshadowed when, years after the bomb, Yasui fights to regain her voice after radiation-related thyroid cancer takes away her ability to talk. Stelson wisely uses a limited-omniscient point of view, allowing readers to see events through Yasui's eyes but not become overwhelmed by the horrors she endured. Her tragic tale is full of terror and despair, but hope and peace also loom large, as Yasui finds strength and inspiration in such figures as Helen Keller, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. Interspersed with ten brief, informative essays ('Racism and War,' 'Radiation Sickness,' 'The H-Bomb,' etc.) and illustrated with numerous photos, this is a significant addition to the available material."―The Horn Book Magazine (Journal)"Books about the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki for young people are plentiful, but very few focus on the hibakusha, survivors of the bombings, and this important biography notably fills that gap. Sachiko Yasui was 6 when an atomic bomb exploded half a mile from her home in Nagasaki. After briefly describing the impact of the war on Sachiko's life, Stelson focuses on the immediate aftermath and the years that followed, culminating in 1995, the 50th anniversary of the bombing, when Sachiko began sharing her experiences publicly. The narrative effectively conveys the long-lasting effects of the bombings, including such radiation-related maladies as leukemia and thyroid cancer. Stelson acknowledges that the "necessity" of the atomic bombing to end the war with Japan is debatable. Although Stelson interviewed Sachiko extensively, direct quotes, which would add significant impact to the narrative, are not used, and oddly absent is any sense of Sachiko's feelings about the bombing. Hibakusha typically speak of the atomic bombings as an important lesson to the world and display a sense of goodwill and understanding rather than animosity or bitterness. There is also no discussion about why the United States bombed Nagasaki so soon after Hiroshima, giving the Japanese so little time to assess and respond to the first attack. An important perspective on the atomic bombings, a controversial decision that continues to provoke passionate debate."―Kirkus Reviews (Journal)"Sachiko Yasui was just six years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on her hometown of Nagasaki. VERDICT: This sensitive and well-crafted account of a Nagasaki bomb survivor is an essential addition to World War II biography collections for middle school students."―starred, School Library Journal (Journal)"Sachiko Yasui was 6 years old in August 1945 when American forces shocked the world by dropping two atomic bombs on Japan. When the bomb code-named 'Fat Man' hit, Yasui was a half-mile away from ground zero, playing with friends in a cave that was used as an air-raid shelter. Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor's Story (Carolrhoda, Ages 10 and up) follows Yasui as she grows up and recovers from the damage inflicted that day. One sibling was killed, two older brothers died soon after, and Yasui's little sister died of leukemia at 13. Still, Yasui felt fortunate that she and her parents survived. Author Caren Stelson tells Yasui's story with warmth, sympathy and the vivid details of Yasui's life before and after the bomb exploded. Filled with powerful archival images, the book also sensitively describes the historical context: the players in World War II, the effects of radiation sickness and the details of postwar American occupation of Japan. Stelson mentions recent controversies about wartime commemoration in both Japan and the United States but focuses on Yasui and the peaceful philosophy she and her family adopted despite what happened to them. Quoting Gandhi―'Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind'―Stelson celebrates the fact that Sachiko Yasui lived on to teach such ideas to the next generation."―The Washington Post (Newspaper)"Fifty years after surviving the atomic bombing of Nagasaki as a six-year-old, Sachiko Yasui began to share her story. This moving work of creative nonfiction offers Yasui's account of life in wartime Japan, the 'unspeakable seconds' of the bombing, her family's struggle to survive, the deaths of her siblings from radiation sickness, her thyroid cancer, and her decades-long struggle to find words as a hibakusha, a survivor of the bombing. Photographs and short essays on topics that include 'Racism and War,' 'Little Boy and Fat Man' (code names for the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively), and 'Long-Term Effects of Radiation' provide illuminating background. Throughout, Stelson highlights defining moments in Yasui's life, such as her father's grief over Gandhi's death, Helen Keller's visit to Nagasaki, and Yasui's awareness of nonviolent protests led by Martin Luther King Jr., which influenced her eventual commitment to speak ('Sachiko knew this: the world must never again see nuclear war'). This powerful narrative account of one person finding her voice after insufferable trauma encapsulates a grim era in global history."―Publishers Weekly (Journal)“Sachiko,” a nonfiction book by Minneapolis writer Caren Stelson, turned up on several 2016 lists, drawing nominations for the National Book Award and the Minnesota Book Award. It’s a slim book with a powerful wallop.Sachiko Yasui was just 6 when the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Her first-person account describes the blast and its aftermath, as survivors struggle to find food and water and later die of burns and radiation sickness at overwhelmed hospitals.Following Japan’s surrender in the war, Sachiko finds herself living in a half-finished house, with classmates who don’t understand her radiation sickness and mock hibakusha or “explosion-affected people.”As she grows older, Sachiko takes strength from her father’s deep study of Gandhi and a postwar visit to Japan by Helen Keller. “All the world is suffering,” Keller says. “But it’s also full of the overcoming.”The story’s first-person account and deep sense of humanity offer young readers a chance to grapple with the hard truths of war. Don’t fault this reviewer for terming the atomic massacre of the civilians of Nagasaki, " a holocaust largely ignored.” Prior to the imposition, beginning in the late 1960s, of an exclusive, proprietary relationship between the word “holocaust" and the suffering of Judaic people in World War II, “holocaust” was freely employed to describe any mass death by fire, which is indeed the dictionary-definition. Since when has Orwellian Newspeak invalidated a person’s right to use a word from the dictionary? All holocausts should be commemorated. What the US government did to Nagasaki after Hiroshima was a horror of unprecedented proportions. There are a few important books on Nagasaki, including "A Song for Nagasaki: The Story of Takashi Nagai-Scientist, Convert, and Survivor of the Atomic Bomb.” What is special and remarkable about "Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor's Story,” is that it’s intended audience is young people, yet in its Zen-like simplicity it makes for compelling reading for adults. The directness of the prose and illustrations makes for a personal account of this great evil that is both clear and poignant. To anticipate the standard alibi concerning the supposed “necessity” of burning alive the people of Japan: Japan had been wanting to surrender from 1943. I am a former reporter for the Associated Press and my colleague in the media, the distinguished journalist Walter Trohan, informed me that he could not report that fact in the Chicago Tribune, due to war-time censorship. He gleaned the fact about the Japanese surrender offer from FDR’s chief of staff, Admiral Leahy. It was published in the Tribune days after the war ended. Japan had sought a conditional surrender. Mr. Truman atomic bombed Japan to impose an unconditional surrender. As for the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor: it was aggressive warfare, and therefore a crime, but it was an attack on a military base, not an American city. In the face of Nagasaki, we should learn humility and the lesson of this and every holocaust: may we never let it happen again. Remembrance is the hinge upon which that pledge depends, and this book assists both us and our youth to remember the horrors of “The Good War” which, in our chauvinism, we too often like to forget.

This book is absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful, and such an important story to share. After reading Bomb: The Race to Build and Steal the World's Most Dangerous Weapon by Steve Sheinkin with my 12 year old, I wanted to read something from the point of view of the Japanese who were victimized by the bomb, and this was the perfect follow-up book for that purpose. That said, my 12 year old had a very hard time reading about the events that transpire in the first few chapters of the book, and asked me if I would stop reading it to him. He said it made him sick to his stomach. So of course I set it aside. The story of what happens to Sachiko and her family following the dropping of the bomb is very disturbing. I hope in the future my son will feel ready to finish the book. I think it's essential that we inform ourselves about what happened to families like Sachiko's, and what is really at stake when we talk about nuclear weapons and war.

Just finished it. Going to recommend it for my book group. Very well written. I am a former journalist so I appreciate the very direct, factual approach. Not maudlin, but empathetic somehow. Photos, illustrations accompanying the text right on point. It helps to place the Nagasaki and Hiroshima in perspective via map, harbor, description of its locale to other parts of Japan. This book might well have accomplished making me a complete peacenik...not Ghandi, not MLK Jr., Sachiko. .

Sachiko is a heartfelt and sensitive story about a life journey from despair to hope. It tells the story we don't know of the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Japan. Six-year old Sachiko Yusui was playing when her life was suddenly turned upside down. Her entire family suffered instant death, death by radiation poisoning or a lifelong struggle with cancer. She herself was bullied and ostracized because of her radiation exposure. But Sachiko was resilient. Her father was her guiding light and through him she learned about the non-violent philosophy of Gandhi. Inspired by the example of Helen Keller she regains her voice that she lost due to thyroid cancer. Eventually she emergences with the strength to become a tireless advocate for peace. An inspiring saga for young and old alike. Longlisted for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature.

What an amazing book! Absolutely addicting. Sachiko endured more in her first 12 years of life than many do in their entire life. So brilliantly written, and a very hard truth. I was beside myself reading this book. Must have!!

Book was a gift for my husband. It arrived quickly and I know he will enjoy reading it. Thanks1

Well worth the time to read - for young adults and adults. We all need to understand what happened in the world in 1945 and Caren Stelson tells the story.

Good.

Silent Travelers: Germs, Genes, and the Immigrant Menace

Review

"Fascinating... Kraut's narrative shows that it has always been easier to blame immigrants for epidemics than to attack the infrastructure of the disease." (New York Times)"Kraut chronicles the medical assimilation of immigrants through a series of public health and curative initiatives... For those interested in the public and private response to immigrant health problems, this book is a great read." (Annals of Internal Medicine)

From the Back Cover

Epidemics and immigrants have suffered a lethal association in the public mind, from the Irish in New York wrongly blamed for the cholera epidemic of 1832 and Chinese in San Francisco vilified for causing the bubonic plague in 1900, to Haitians in Miami stigmatized as AIDS carriers in the 1980s. Silent Travelers vividly describes these and many other episodes of medicalized prejudice and analyzes their impact on public health policy and beyond. The book shows clearly how the equation of disease with outsiders and illness with genetic inferiority broadly affected not only immigration policy and health care but even the workplace and schools. The first synthesis of immigration history and the history of medicine, Silent Travelers is also a deeply human story, enriched by the voices of immigrants themselves. Irish, Italian, Jewish, Latino, Chinese, and Cambodian newcomers among others grapple in these pages with the mysteries of modern medicine and American prejudice. Anecdotes about famous and little-known figures in the annals of public health abound, from immigrant physicians such as Maurice Fishberg and Antonio Stella who struggled to mediate between the cherished Old World beliefs and practices of their patients and their own state-of-the-art medical science, to "Typhoid Mary" and the inspiring example of Mother Cabrini. Alan M. Kraut tells of the newcomers founding of hospitals to care for their own the "Halls of Great Peace" (actually little more than hovels where lepers could go to die) set up by Chinese immigrants; the establishment of St. Vincent's Hospital in New York as an institution sensitive to the needs of Catholic patients; and the creation of a tuberculosis sanitarium inDenver by Eastern European Jewish tradespeople who managed to scrape together $1.20 in contributions at their first meeting. Tapping into a rich array of sources - from turn-of-the-century government records to an advice book aimed at Italians financed by the DAR, from the photographs of Jacob Riis to the records of insurance companies and visiting nurse services, as well as poems, songs, stories, and letters of patients - this book evokes an intimate sense of the poignancy of the immigrant odyssey. Amid growing concern over using AIDS to exclude immigrants and ongoing debates about multi-culturalism, this look at how earlier generations struggled with such problems is especially valuable.

Arrived on time and as described.

Arrived as expected. Good shape

A necessary book I needed for a medicine class in college. It was perfect and helped me pass the class!

I confess I only read one chapter. This is alas one of those books that doesn't want to show you anything or explain something to you. It wants to preach to you. I wants to make you feel guilty for what others have done.I refuse to get my underwear in a tangle over quarantines. If pressed I would probably favor more and stronger quarantines - not open door policies. This book is only for those who want to feel guilty about public health policies.Public health officials have long striven to protect millions by inconveniencing a handful. Sensible people thank them for that service.

I read this book for a graduate course on American immigration, and I enjoyed it (as much as one can enjoy a book on public health.) I found it to be thoroughly researched, interesting, and compellingly tied to current immigration and health issues. The book is not driven by any political agenda, and sticks to describing history using evidence gleaned from government and medical records, personal anecdotes, and the facts as they were remembered by those who lived them. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about the history of American immigration as it related to health, disease, medical prejudice, and nativism.

Extremely well laid out, this iconic book is valuable to get a birds-eye view about the Children's Book market and personal remarks from some of its known publishers and agents. (I really enjoyed these "Q&A" interviews with editors, author suggestions and other 'side-bars'.) Still, this book is what I would call a 'scaffolding tool'. I mean, you have to read this book with an attentive spirit, take a lot of the information seriously, but then RESEARCH more. AND do not take all items stated as 'Bible'. As a reference book, it's already aging! For example, there is a superb section "Book Publishers". Most publishers are listed. With each listing is the address & webpage, acquisition team info' (editors, etc.), the type of books they publish, how to contact them and other information. However, a writer intended to be published, must go to each website, cross reference and update the information you find.I bought this book in 8/2009 (mind you this IS a 2010 reference) and in my own efforts, looking at each publisher's web site, I found enough info' in the "Book Publishers" section to be 'incorrect'. Of course this makes sense...the book was likely written and finalized at the beginning of this year!Keep in mind, the market is fluid, editors change jobs, companies are tightening their acquisition preferences and some have very, very clear specifics relative to how and what to submit and most importantly, even if you should submit a manuscript(Seriously, some even tell you their preferred envelope type. FOLLOW their directions to a 't').Do you homework! Good luck!

I like to use this Children's Writer's Market to search for Publishing Houses, and Agents. Although this book is from 2010, it can still be used as a good starting point for your research. You will still need to go online and research each listings for new Editors, Agents, and Submission Guidelines because in the publishing business there are always updates and changes. This book also list good advise for new writers and illustrators as well as interesting industry pointers and websites. Look for a newer version for more updated facts.

This book didn't give me the information I was looking for. I am an Illustrator and currently work with local Authors. I know the market is constantly changing. I would go online and research before sending out any artwork. The information given at least gives you somewhere to start. My advice would be "Get an Agent"The seller was awesome though, the book came in to me in great shape and even though I'm a bit late on the review, I would buy again from them!

Extremely helpful. Tons of publishers, editors, and what they're looking for in this book. If you're trying to get published, you NEED to get this book. Not sure about the word count? if they send your dummy book back? what publishers are looking for? does a publisher accept multiple submissions? how many 1st-time authors a publisher accepts each year? Almost EVERY question you need to know can be found in here. This book also includes some great tips and articles for aspiring writers to read. You need this book. Informative and extremely helpful!

Let's face it...this is four years old now, and if there's a 2014 edition of CW&I Market, I stand amazed...so much is now online. However, the benefit of the hard copy is that you can take a highlighter pen to it and mark the markets you might want to revisit. Maybe I'm waxing nostalgic for that approach, but it had it's merits. All that said, this is solid product that is also probably antiquated at this point.

Many of the entries list publishers as no longer accepting unsolicited manuscripts. I really did not find this book to be helpful or worthwhile. On the contrary, it left me with the feeling that children's publishing is an exercise in futility. If you want to get published, write a book about how to get published.

Very happy with this book and the price couldn't be beat! The information inside is very help as well and love the layout of this new version! I have a previous version as well and both are very help, not repetitive like I thought it might be. Good buy for someone looking to get into or that is already into writing! You really MUST buy this book!

This is a big book with information that is good and useful, but I also have found there are other books that would be more helpful in what I was trying to learn. I wasn't familiar with some of the terms used and it made it hard to understand some parts. I needed more examples, especially when it came to picture book writing. It may be better for someone writing chapter books or young adult books.
