When your goal is to live Sustainably one primary concern is staying connected. It's one thing to step back to "Little House on the Prairie" days, but with this book you can unplug from cable dependency and support your 'information junkie' needs at the same time. This book, written in a plain, easy-to-understand way helps you to understand the FTA system already in place as well as how to easily tap into it. Photo is my work to setup the FTA Satellite dish.

He mentioned quite a few things which FTA is a field that I've been interested in.Also if someone wishes to explore, some education and learning one can do a start up business. When you look at monthly payments VS own your own, I even owned my own telephones in the 1970's which under CFR 47 PART 68 of the FCC RULES, remember the FCC IS ON YOUR SIDE.Thanks for publishing this bookBTW I'M a Amateur Radio Operator EXTRA CLASS and a AAS DEGREE IT MGT and a former Society of Broadcast Engineer associate member and IEEE Student member which gives you an idea what I know. But this book

I wanted to learn about FTA and evaluate then the possibilities / advantages to start in that line. As an ignorant of this subject I was looking for a book that could explain in plain English what is all about FTA. This book fulfilled my expectations and convinced me to join into this hobbie.Thank you Dennis!

Only a few chapters directly addressed FTA Satellite Operation. The rest of the book talked about surface TV, and Wifi which is well covered in the popular literature. The title is a misleading in that FTA was not covered in most of the book.

There was a lot of introductory tech material on tools, cables, tv's etc. but only two chapters on what I bought the book for. I skimmed all but the receiver discussion and still felt lost shopping for one. I put up my own BUD and did analog C-band in the 90's but it is all quite different now.

This book has more than just satellite info, it talks about all FTA possibilities. I just wish they did more diagrams when talking about theory.

The book is well written. I was hoping for info as to satelite TV equipment vendors but did not find much in the book. To bad the authors web site is not operating.

Disappointing I was looking for a way to get the cable type channels individually

Review

"This is an excellent book. It performs a significant service by its uninhibited exposure of Hegel's dark side."―Michael Inwood, Trinity College, Oxford, International Philosophical Quarterly, Vol. 42, No. 3, September 2002"The organization of the text is first class, the reading of Hegel's texts sensitive and perspicacious, and the writing poised, even elegant. This would be a fine book for a scholar at any stage of his or her career. For a first book it is absolutely exceptional. . . . As a tracing of the influence of non-standard discourses on Hegel, and as a tracking of their effective presence in Hegel's texts from all periods of Hegel's literary production, Hegel and the Hermetic Tradition is now the indispensable text."―Cyril O'Regan, University of Notre Dame, Owl of Minerva, Vol. 34, No. 2, Spring/Summer 2003"This first book-length study of Hegel and Hermeticism builds on both Continental and Anglo-American Hegal scholarship, contributes new perspectives on the gnostic and mystical aspects of Hegel's thought, and is eminently readable! Left- and right-wing Hegelians and theologians may have to revise their estimation of Hegel, if Magee's interpretation withstands critical scrutiny."―Amos Yong, Bethel College. Religious Studies Review, Vol. 28, No. 4, October 2002"Because Hegel claimed to have attained wisdom rather than to be seeking it, Magee cannot count him as a philosopher. . . He draws evidence from both his work and his life."―Reference and Research Book News, November 2001"Magee's splendid book marshals all the available evidence for the Hermetic background and interests of Hegel. This is no small achievement. It involves mastering a side of intellectual history that is frequently referenced but rarely comprehended and an exhaustive account of its application to the formidable philosophical apparatus of Hegel. The result deserves to become the standard reference work for this dimension, not only of Hegel but also of the entire idealist context."―Review of Metaphysics"I hail this book as an important event in Hegelian studies, especially since it addresses issues that have been neglected or dealt with superficially. Now we have a cogent scholarly work that will serve as the point of reference for many years to come."―Antoine Faivre, Directeur d'Etudes l'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Sciences Religieuses, Sorbonne)"Thankfully, there are still some writers today who remember that if one tries to discern what a long-dead author's work means for us without first trying to take the author on his own terms, then one runs the risk of reading into the work the prejudices of the present. Glenn Alexander Magee has written a wonderful book; wonderful because it is the subtext for all the major Hegel literature since the 1930s."―Tom Darby, Carleton University"Glenn Alexander Magee has added a crucial dimension to our understanding of Hegel by showing in abundant detail the deep and life-long influences of hermeticism, alchemy, the Kabbala, and various forms of theosophy on Hegel's metaphysics. . . . Magee gives us a Hegel that Hegel would have recognized on the spot, and we are much in his debt for his doing so."―Robert S. Corrington, Drew University

Was Hegel a Hermetic occultist? Maybe. Glen Magee takes us on a tour of Hegel's writings, but unlike other Hegel scholars, Magee places Hegel against the occultic backdrop of his homeland and upbringing. This allows Magee to take seriously the Hermetic references Hegel makes. But before we can answer that question, we must define Hermeticism. It is a broad tradition of thought that grew out of the writings of Hermes and was expanded and further developed through the infusion of other traditions: alchemy, Kabbalism, mysticism, etc (Magee 1). Magee argues that there are striking similarities and correspondences between Hegel’s thought and theosophic hermeticism: Masonic subtext of initiatory mysticism in Phenomenology, A Boehmian subtext to the Preface of Phenomenology, Kabbalism in his doctrine of Objective Spirit, and Alchemical images in Phil. of Right.Hegel’s journals included diagrams which could only be found in hermetic grimoires. Later in life he began to publicly identify with occultic figures (4). Hegel knew that men like Boehme and others were tagged as hermetics and if he publicly identified with their teachings, he knew he would be seen as a hermeticist.Magee, following Dame Frances Yates, gives a brilliant overview of Hermetic history in the Renaissance.THE CASE BEGINSWhile we have no evidence that Hegel was a Masonic initiate, he collaborated with Masons, wrote Masonic poetry to Masons, and otherwise breathed the hermetic and theosophic air of Swabia.Whatever else one may think about Freemasonry, and regardless of which conspiracies are true (and no doubt they all are), Freemasonry became a repository for hermetic ideas (53). Unlike their Scottish counterparts, German lodges “were teeming with magical, theosophical, mystical ideas” (56).We know that Hegel was influenced by Lessing’s play Nathan the Wise (55) and Lessing was a Mason.Memory as Occultic Practice“Philosophy establishes nothing new; what we have brought forth by our reflection is what everyone already took for granted without reflection” (Hegel, EL, 22, quoted in Magee 85).Hegel acknowledges he is within the mystical tradition (EL, 82).Memory mediates a society’s passing down of Absolute Spirit (Magee 87).Magee posits the Mythology of Reason as the key to unlocking Hegel (88).Speculative Philosophy holds up a mirror (speculum) to the Idea itself: it allows the Idea to comprehend itself (88). In fact, following the Kabbalist tradition, the “mirror” allows one to behold the deeper essence of Spirit (120).Hegel’s thought seeks to unify conceptual thinking with mythopoetic thinking (91).Hegel’s Magic Words are the categories of his philosophy. Our access to recollection/Memory is through Imagination (93). Hegel does not seek to tell us what “Substance” or “Absolute” is; it seeks to bring it into being. This brings us back to the Hermetic Art of Memory. “Imagination” is to evoke from memory the Perennial Philosophy. In other words, to echo Jung, it draws out from within the unconscious.Kant and the TriadsHegel said Kant rediscovered (wiedergefundne) the teaching about triads, the triadic form (100, PG 29, 37), thus implying it is a perennial idea. Most importantly, Hegel says Kant rediscovered it, not that it derives from Kant.Hegel saw Hermetism and Alchemy as manifestations of a collective subconscious and that is how he could take them seriouly (Magee 103).The Divine TriangleA triangle of Triangles, where each center was also a perimeter. The triangle also has planetary and alchemical symbols. Then there is a letter Hegel wrote to the magician Windischmann on the latter’s mental torments (116). Magee argues that the triangle represents a turning point, a “nocturnal contraction of his essence.”Aristotle had made a connection between aether and pneuma (Generation of Animals 736b29-737a1). The element in the stars is aether. Insofar as we are capable of receiving that form, we have astral substance.Hegel drew upon the implicit Hermetic and Boehmian influences of his upbringing in writing PG. We can see a Hermetic Structure:A = A; All is one (hen kai pan). This is the mystical doctrine of “coincidence of opposites).Alchemical ElementsHegel floods his works with alchemical references like “the foaming chalice.” This allows Hegel to identify Spirit with the Infinite, thus avoiding a bad infinity (147). At the end of this Grail Quest Hegel has claimed to attain “Absolute Knowing.”The Four ElementsWhen Hegel speaks of the square he generally has in mind the four elements (192). The triangle is the symbolic form of spirit, the square of nature. Hegel is saying that man’s consciousness exists within these four elements. And by Hegel’s time, Magee notes, the “four elements/square” had become so connected with alchemy that one couldn’t dissociate the images (193). Further, magicians and alchemists routinely made tables where the elements of one sphere corresponded to the elements of another. Hegel makes such an association in Phil. Nature, sec. 280).Conclusion:Is Hegel a Hermetic? While we don't have any journal that says, "Today I embraced Hermeticism," we can see that he came from an occultic background, utilized occultic symbols, identified with occultic figures in public at the end of his career, and otherwise followed the same Occultic path.

Wow this book! I am a 10-year amateur (though highly committed) philosophy reader, and I have read about the hermetic tradition before... This book is highly enjoyable, for anyone interested in mysticism, it is a great introduction and a bit more, for those interested in Hegel's philosophy, it is a radical different way of looking at his system of thought that makes absolute sense and totally adds up! The book is clear in every way: layout, argumentation, style, etc. and it is absolutely clear Hegel was deep into this ancient tradition by the end of the book. It is one of the best books I have read these last years, congratulations to the author!

Prior to discovering this book, I had come to the realization that Hegel had been influenced by mystics. I had read most of Hegel's Lectures on the History of Philosophy and his attention to Boehme, Bruno, Alchemy, Kabbalah, etc. was fascinating. I also have studied the history of hermeticism so this topic was not as alien as it is to most who come from the Anglophone tradition. When I came across this book, I could not put it down. The thesis is one i had a foggy notion of, but this sholarly work presents the thesis claearly with an overflowing glut of evidence. I cannot praise this book enough. Professor Maggee knows that the history of Hermetic thought in Germany from Meister Eckhart to Hegel is one that simply is unknown in the English speaking world. So before proving the thesis, he provides one of the best history lessons on this forgotten history that i have seen to date. This is must reading for all philosophers and historians. I do not give 5 stars liberally.

This beguiling work opens with the statement, "Hegel is not a philosopher". As we go further we see this is to mean that Hegel is expressing the perspective of Absolute Knowledge, in the echoes of the Hermetic tradition. This book is a bit of a tour de force, although perhaps unsettling to those who inherit the Hegel reshaped in the nineteenth century by the Young Hegelians and others, indeed by the reticent stance of Hegel himself whose interest in Bohme and Eckhart, and early contacts with Rosicrucianism, the Masons, and study of a host of occult and theosophical subjects, tends to be factored out of his biographies. This component of Hegel's philosophic odyssey might never meet the approval of an age of science, yet the context is important to an understanding of Hegel's sources and development, and also on the grounds that much that is obscure clarifies at once if seen in this light. In fact this analysis hits the spot. Too much logical bandwidth is wasted on a sort of logical positivist recoil at the glyphic Hegel. Seen in this light, he is another man entirely and can be taken on his own terms, and with a proper caution that the seeker with a mystic triangle argument stands in ghostly shadows near the dialectician hoping to explicate a law of history (read Left Hegelian, Marxist). It is important to know what you were up to!Very well documented text, with good historical snapshots of this side of Reformation history, made to disappear from most philosophic treatments of Hegelian subjects.

William Penn: Founder of Pennsylvania (Graphic Biographies), by Ryan Jacobson

Review

William Penn is remembered chiefly as the founder of Pennsylvania. This graphic biography (think comic strip) follows Penns life from his boyhood through his growing interest in the Quaker religion and the consequences of his decision to become an active Quaker. Imprisoned several times for preaching before Quaker meetings, Penn decided that it might be best to establish a free Quaker settlement in North America. He had the opportunity to do so when King James II settled a loan due Penns father by granting Penn a large area of land that became the state of Pennsylvania. From the Graphic Biographies series, the colorful format is certain to appeal to todays kids; it is likely to get reluctant readers to take a second look at material that they might otherwise view as boring. Told for the most part through dialogue, this biography is fast-moving, entertaining, and amazingly informative. (Dr. Craig Horle, co-editor of The Papers of William Penn, served as a consultant .) At the end of the book readers will find two pages of facts about William Penn, a glossary, a brief list of Internet sites and books where one can learn more, a bibliography, and an index. --Childrens Literature Comprehensive Database, January 2007############################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################### --Library Media Connection; Vol. 25, No. 7; Pages 83-84, April 2007############################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################### --Children's Literature Comprehensive Database, January 2007

I really enjoyed this and so did my daughter. It was much easier to get through and felt like a very interactive way to approach history. My daughter has since spouted several random facts about William Penn, which makes me think this style stuck. :)

This book immediately captured my student's attention. She read it over and over. Better yet, her regular classroom teacher asked for her own copy.

GREAT!!!!

The vast majority of our industry’s producers only reach a fraction of their theoretical maximum professional potential. This limitation has its roots in the way most producers are trained: They are trained to be stand-alone “retail” agents who are charged to “sell” a certain company’s products directly to consumers. For almost all of them, this is a dreadful daily ritual – definitely not a labor of love!Chris knows there is an easier way and poses this question: “Instead of chasing down prospects, why not have them come to you?”His book then systematically outlines the most effective marketing and advertising campaigns available today. Chris teaches what most carriers fail to teach: How to run an effective multi-segmented systematically executed advertising campaign that “brands” the experienced producer as a highly prized resource for consumers, business owners, and their Centers of Influence.Chris' book focuses marketing on where it needs to be: The Producer. It’s not an insurer, not an investment company, and not some marketing group that brings in sales. It’s The Producer! Chris’ book is completely focused on helping The Producer reach their maximum potential.Chris’ book is comprehensive - it covers just about any imaginable advertising and marketing strategy… from optimized LinkedIn use, to using Instagram, even signage on trucks and buildings! Chris covers it all! Not all strategies will work for all producers – but some of them will!Chris’ creative branding tools are proven to be highly effective with prospective policy buyers and Centers of Influence alike. In fact, he makes the point that the strategic cultivation of non-competing like-minded Centers of Influence enables producers to get out of the daily need to engage in distressing prospecting rituals. Chris has a whole chapter on effective Center of Influence cultivation techniques.I’ve ready many “how to succeed in this business” books over the years. Few of them are so focused on just The Producer. And none of them bring the creativity and practical “how to” implementation recommendations that Chris delivers flawlessly. I highly recommend these 183 pages of intelligent insights as to how you can reach your maximum potential. Once you implement some of the ideas so eloquently outlined in this book, your days of painful prospecting will have come to an end.

I liked the variety of ideas for growing your business. While all may not be applicable or the best method for you, there are great ideas to contemplate while building and growing your business. For me, the referrals and COIs were a great reminder from classes I actually had with the great Chris Carlson. He is that special.

This book will absolutely transform the way you think about "selling". I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to fill their pipeline!

I bought this book after taking a job with a company that seemed to be screwing up VoIP telephony every step of the way. This book confirmed this. With many highlights and dog eared pages, I placed this on my bookshelf at work. When co-workers said something stupid, I referred to this book for additional credibility on what I was saying to them.Great overview of voice over IP. It is not only a Cisco pandering book like many are. It mentiones SIP and open source methods. Many common basic pitfalls and solutions are discussed. This is a perfect book to read for a small business or group to use before buying hardware or being sold a service or product. It is written in generic form so any vendors products and services can be understood before wasting time, money and effort.Do not buy a MAX Call-Taking VoIP telephone system for a 9-1-1 call center before buying this book. Those that have, are living with the problems that could have been avoided if engineers read the basics of VoIP telephony before making such a horrible product.

Good as a reference. Good historical information, too. Helped demystify VoIP jargon and concepts. I was looking for a less comprehensive, but more specific guide to actually implementing a Vonage system, explaining option screens and features. This book was, nonetheless, a good resource that filled in much that I did not know about the technology and its politics.

He gave some great primer on how VOIP Telephony works, very simple not too technical. Easy to understand.

If you are a project management practitioner, involved in site conversions (VoIP delivery and implementation), having this book to reference as required---will be a wonderful addition to your project management reference library.Notable too:> Unified Communications For Dummies Tony Bradley> VoIP Deployment For Dummies Stephen P. Olejniczak

This book isn't for technical people looking to implement a VoIP solution. It doesn't even define the terms one typically finds in eBay auction descriptions. For example, a typical description for a VoIP phone contains statements like:- Support popular vocoders including G.723.1 (5.3K/6.3K), G.729A/B, G.711 (a-law and u-law), G.726, G.728, and wide-band G.722 (Model 102D).- Support Silence Suppression, VAD (Voice Activity Detection), CNG (Comfort Noise Generation), Line Echo Cancellation (G.168), and AGC (Automatic Gain Control)There is no introduction to this terminology in the book. Only a few paragraphs on SIP and nothing on H.323, SCCP, or IAX. Nothing about setting up gateways or servers. No mention of Asterisk or Digium cards or Skype.According to the back cover the author is a business professor which is likely the reason for the lack of technical material. I get the impression he is well-versed in traditional telephony systems but his actual hands-on experience with VoIP systems is very limited if it exists at all.

Great and quick.

This may have been relevant in last decade, or century. Also, I had read the AVaya hype years ago. Had I known this was written by and promoting Avaya, I never would have ordered it.

Review

"Lewis and Diamond persuasively explain the gross misalignment between abstract values and unequal outcomes. In a racially diverse school like Riverview, parents, teachers, and students can value diversity and equality in principle, but they can also behave in ways that exacerbate and reproduce class and racial hierarchies, resulting in an achievement gap that will not disappear with raceneutral policies." - Jennifer Lee, Columbia University, American Journal of Sociology

If you are looking for a sociological analysis of a single affluent school and the ways in which white privilege may contribute to the achievement gap, this is the book for you. If you are a school board member, administrator or policy maker seeking to implement transformative change, may I suggest Chenoweth's outstanding "It's Being Done" trilogy. Tracking guides minorities away from challenging courses. Subtle systemic differences provide disciplinary privileges to white students from privileged families in a school where affluence prevails. An accumulation of differential treatment creates barriers to closing the achievement gap. Is this school, with a white upper class steeped in privilege, parents who evidently can call on lawyers to bail their children out of trouble, really representative of urban schools with high rates of poverty in across racial lines? This is an anecdotal presentation written through the authors' lens. What about the schools that recruit minority students into pre AP, and instead of dumping challenging courses, strive to prepare minority students to accept those challenges, and provide culturally responsive teaching in high level courses? How do we prepare students for the expectations of workplace still dominated by privilege and at times unreasonable expectations? What is the role of instructional leadership in setting high expectations for teachers and staff: is this a book about white privilege, or about a school whose leadership has failed to communicate high expectations for all students through proactive leadership. n

After reading, it became clear me and those around me interested in ending the the educational divide in the U.S., that we as a community could implement what we learned from this 5 year study and change the trajectory of children's lives. We have since raised funds and started a test program called "The Academy" in Fort Myers Fl. where we track and document the effects of providing the type of attention, engagement and support described in the book in coordination with a proven online curriculum. In addition to the award winning online curriculum, “The Academy” focuses on addressing students perception of self and teaching how to dismiss the low expectations applied to them, the dismissive attitudes of previous well-intentioned educators and the pervasive negative influences directed to low-income, people of color in America. In our first 12 week session we started with 12 children below grade level in reading and or math. We implemented many of the corrective concepts described in the book and were amazed at how quickly the children began to respond. Within 4 weeks we went from do I have to do this to can you help me. By week 6 we had open communication and questions coming from our 6th-8th grade students. By the end of week 12 100% of the participating students completing the post assessment were above grade level using the Texas assessment, which is at a higher level than the Florida Assessment. We are now actively working to raise funds to expand the program so we can track document and share the results with the DOE and local school board. We are absolutely certain that the educational divide can be eradicated this decade.

This book is an easy read. The researchers did their homework. Some of the negative reviews say the work is biased. Well, the researchers went into the work with data-- African American students are identified as behind their white contemporaries when it comes to achievement in public schools. This research takes a look at middle class students (black and white) within a middle class neighborhood and determine what variables account for the achievement gap, even in "good" schools.

Such an important read for all educators and parents to understand how we enact systemic racism in our micro decisions and without awareness.

I am a former teacher and I found the book to be probing, informative, and clearly written. This is a must-read and I am very happy that I purchased it.

A thorough capturing of the life of a high school, the good, the bad and the ugly. Lewis and Diamond made the school come alive for me, I now understand one of the entrenched, perplexing issues of the day, the apartheid arrangement of today's schools. They do an excellent job of untangling what people say from what they do. There is a duplicity that is difficult to describe and categorize, but nonetheless it is real and has real consequences. The white students wind up with the good education and GPA, the black and brown kids get the basics. Once this pattern is established in high school, the obvious conclusion is its continuation into college and career. Given the systematic nature of the problem, I did find it hard to determine whose intentions were not being made manifest. All who want to truly understand the education system today should read this book.

Our district is doing a book study with this text with over 130 people in six sites--elementary through high school. It is critical for mostly white school districts to read and consider the outcomes reproduced when we don't change the system to align with our intentions.

Everyone, especially parents and teachers, should read this book if they are serious about educating all of our young people, not only academically, but also culturally. In my opinion, this book would benefit the entire general public.

Review

"To Michael J Glennon, in National Security and Double Government, . . . no matter who is elected to run White House and Congress, they are puppets of a permanent apparatus. In less capable hands, Glennon's thesis might come across as sophomoric. Yet as a scholar who worked on Capitol Hill for years, Glennon is that rare thing: an academic with real world experience. Instead of a rupture between George W Bush and Obama, Glennon sees remarkable continuity. Towards the end of his presidency, Bush was asked what most surprised him about the job. 'How little authority I have,' he said. That is also what people say about Obama." -Edward Luce, Financial Times "Mr. Glennon smartly points out that while lawmakers aren't experts in social policy, education, economics and countless other areas subject to legislation, it is only in the realm of national security and intelligence that they surrender the reins of power. This is a powerful part of his argument: The lack of oversight means there is neither check nor balance on how our national-security policies are implemented or on how they are created in the first place." -Ali Soufan, The Wall Street Journal "Glennon's book is not a breezy read: It's thick with fact and not unappreciative of conundrum. Nor is he glib with proposed solutions: to adequately respond to the threats posed by a below-the-radar second government will require. But if Glennon's book is enlightening it is also scary. And it's not fiction." -Mickey Edwards, The Boston Globe "Glennon has written a unique book that stands out among the collection of post-9/11 works for the way it lashes historical trends to the most contemporary problems of government secrecy, power and overreach in a highly readable way. I underlined passages on just about every page and can't wait to reread it. The 'ah ha!' moments are endless." -Dana Priest, The Washington Post "Michael Glennon's book is important precisely because it pulls back the curtain to reveal the realities of the largely unconstrained U.S. national security state. In doing so, Glennon's analysis shows how the national security apparatus is a threat to the very freedoms its inhabitants and supporters purport to protect." -Christopher J. Coyne, Public Choice "Glennon's argument is powerful and troubling. Whatever the exact diagnosis of a problem that is clearly multidimensional, Glennon is devastating in his critique of Congressional weakness in checking Executive actions and overseeing military and intelligence agencies. Whether or not it helps resuscitate American democracy or serves as an autopsy on its demise, Double Government is essential reading." - Clifford Bob, New Rambler "If constitutional government is to endure in the United States, Americans must confront the fundamental challenges presented by this chilling analysis of the national security state." -Bruce Ackerman, Yale University "Shrewdly updating Walter Bagehot's theory of 'double government,' Michael Glennon shows how present-day Washington really works. In our faux democracy, those we elect to govern serve largely ornamental purposes, while those who actually wield power, especially in the realm of national security, do so chiefly with an eye toward preserving their status and prerogatives. Read this incisive and richly documented book, and you'll understand why." -Andrew J. Bacevich, Boston University "Taking a leaf from Walter Bagehot's thesis of dual government in Britain, Michael Glennon has transported the concept of 'double government' to the United States analyzing the constitutional institutions, or what he calls the 'Madisonian' side; and a cohort of several hundred senior military, diplomatic, and intelligence officials who run the daily business of national security, or what he calls the 'Trumanite' side. This explains the relatively little difference between the Bush 43 and the Obama presidencies. In this brilliant, deeply researched book, Glennon spells out the relation of his overall thesis to contemporary issues such as the Snowden revelations." -Charles G. Cogan, Harvard Kennedy School "His answer is altogether darker and more radical than you'd reasonably expect from a former Senate Foreign Relations Committee legal counsel and current international law professor at Tufts. Glennon argues, in essence, that the national security state has become a runaway train and that presidential elections are contests that determine who gets to pretend he's driving." -Gene Healy, Cato Institute "Michael Glennon has written a brilliant book that helps explain why U.S. foreign policy changes so little over time, despite frequent failure. Barack Obama certainly promised to fundamentally alter America's approach to the world, but little changed after he took office. Glennon shows how the underlying national security bureaucracy in Washington - what might be called the deep state - ensures that presidents and their successors act on the world stage like Tweedledee and Tweedledum." -John J. Mearsheimer, University of Chicago "In this timely book Michael Glennon provides a compelling argument that America's national security policy is growing outside the bounds of existing government institutions. This is at once a constitutional challenge, but is also a case study in how national security can change government institutions, create new ones, and, in effect, stand-up a parallel state. This is a well-argued book of academic import and policy relevance. It is recommended reading for an informed debate on an issue of great significance." -Vali Nasr, Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies "National Security and Double Government is an important and insightful book. It should be read by anyone concerned that Obama's national security policies differ so little from those of the Bush Administration, and by every in-coming President and her staff." -Morton H. Halperin, Senior Advisor, Open Society Foundations "Michael Glennon's National Security and Double Government explains why U.S. foreign policy is prone to recurring failure and resistant to genuine reform. Instead of being responsive to citizens or subject to effective checks and balances, U.S. national security policy is in fact conducted by a shadow government of bureaucrats and a supporting network of think tanks, media insiders, and ambitious policy wonks. Presidents may come and go, but the permanent national security establishment inevitably defeats their efforts to chart a new course. Gracefully written and extensively researched, this book is the most penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy that I have read in years." -Stephen M. Walt, Harvard Kennedy School "National Security and Double Government is brilliant, deep, sad, and vastly learned across multiple fields--a work of Weberian power and stature. It deserves to be read and discussed. The book raises philosophical questions in the public sphere in a way not seen at least since Fukuyama's end of history." -David A. Westbrook, Del Cotto Professor, SUNY Buffalo Law School "My favorite nonfiction book this year is National Security and Double Government by Michael J. Glennon, which argues that the president and Congress are largely figureheads in setting U.S. national security policy." -Tom Jackson, Sandusky Register "In his provocative new book, National Security and Double Government, he [Glennon] analyzes political developments after World War II that should be of great interest to those who follow constitutional law." -Lou Fisher, The Federal LawyerNational Security and Double Government is a well-written and researched work. The author eloquently states his case with support from numerous examples, quotes, and case studies from past political, military, and judicial personnel. Overall, this book provides an important and timely contribution to the current political discourse." -George Washington International Law Review"Michael Glennon is a respected scholar; his book is objective and nonideological; and his contentions and conclusions are carefully documented and corroborated." -David S. D'Amato, The Future of Freedom Foundation"It is refreshing to read a book or article that avoids optimistic but unachievable normative proposals. Glennon's book neatly captures a real phenomenon in the national security arena: executive-branch experts have significant, and sometimes unchecked, power to make critical policy decisions that are hard to unwind."-AJIL, Ashley Deeks, University of Virginia School of Law"Michael Glennon's book is important precisely because it pulls back the curtain to reveal the realities of the largely unconstrained U.S. national security state. In doing so, Glennon's analysis shows how the national security apparatus is a threat to the very freedoms its inhabitants and supporters purport to protect." - Christopher J. Coyne, Public Choice

Why does Barack Obama’s performance on national security issues in the White House contrast so strongly with his announced intentions as a candidate in 2008? After all, not only has Obama continued most of the Bush policies he decried when he ran for the presidency, he has doubled down on government surveillance, drone strikes, and other critical programs.Michael J. Glennon set out to answer this question in his unsettling new book, National Security and Double Government. And he clearly dislikes what he found. The answer, Glennon discovered, is that the US government is divided between the three official branches of the government, on the one hand — the “Madisonian” institutions incorporated into the Constitution — and the several hundred unelected officials who do the real work of a constellation of military and intelligence agencies, on the other hand. These officials, called “Trumanites” in Glennon’s parlance for having grown out of the national security infrastructure established under Harry Truman, make the real decisions in the area of national security. (To wage the Cold War, Truman created the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Department of Defense, the CIA, the NSA, and the National Security Council.) “The United States has, in short,” Glennon writes, “moved beyond a mere imperial presidency to a bifurcated system — a structure of double government — in which even the President now exercises little substantive control over the overall direction of U.S. national security policy. . . . The perception of threat, crisis, and emergency has been the seminal phenomenon that has created and nurtures America’s double government.” If Al Qaeda hadn’t existed, the Trumanite network would have had to create it — and, Glennon seems to imply, might well have done so.The Trumanites wield their power with practiced efficiency, using secrecy, exaggerated threats, peer pressure to conform, and the ability to mask the identity of the key decision-maker as their principal tools.Michael J. Glennon comes to this task with unexcelled credentials. A professor of international law at Tufts and former legal counsel for the Senate Armed Services Committee, he came face to face on a daily basis with the “Trumanites” he writes about. National Security and Double Government is exhaustively researched and documented: notes constitute two-thirds of this deeply disturbing little book. The more I learn about how politics and government actually work — and I’ve learned a fair amount in my 73 years — the more pessimistic I become about the prospects for democracy in America. In some ways, this book is the most worrisome I’ve read over the years, because it implies that there is no reason whatsoever to think that things can ever get better. In other words, to borrow a phrase from the Borg on Star Trek, “resistance is futile.” That’s a helluva takeaway, isn’t it?On reflection, what comes most vividly to mind is a comment from the late Chalmers Johnson on a conference call in which I participated several years ago. Johnson, formerly a consultant to the CIA and a professor at two campuses of the University of California (Berkeley and later San Diego), was the author of many books, including three that awakened me to many of the issues Michael Glennon examines: Blowback, The Sorrows of Empire, and Nemesis. Johnson, who was then nearly 80 and in declining health, was asked by a student what he would recommend for young Americans who want to combat the menace of the military-industrial complex. “Move to Vancouver,” he said. The mounting evidence notwithstanding, I just hope it hasn’t come to that.

I heard an interview with the author and decided to buy the book. The thesis of the book is that there are two governments, one the public and the other the security state and that, no matter what actions the public (e.g. the president) may taken, the security state controls events such that the president or others have a hard time changing them. The analog organization is the mid-1800's british government as described by Bagehot. While the thesis is compelling along the narrow dimension of the security state (which seems to have overtaken our federal government), the shadow government is, in fact, a multi-faceted affair, with civil servants, oligarchs and corporatists also play a role. They may operate through the security state structure to further their goals (e.g. specific spending or tax plans) but they represent a motivation beyond an interest in national security.I've found it hard to go beyond about 1/2 or 3/4 through - I probably would have gotten as much from [...]

It is about time that academia turns its attention to a huge problem in our federal government which has arisen since the end of World War II: namely, a national security establishment which conducts U.S. military and intelligence operations outside the Constitutional framework and free of the accountability otherwise imposed by law. The President has become a mere pronouncer of policies in foreign affairs and national security matters, fashioned by the CIA and the Pentagon, with no meaningful Congressional oversight or involvement of our courts.Prof. Glennon is to be commended for having the intestinal fortitude to write this book and subjecting himself to the inevitable criticism which will follow from the defenders of the status quo. However, I can only give the book four stars, as it has a serious flaw in my opinion. The author subscribes to a benign explanation for the rise in double government, and unjustly ignores the role of the armaments industry and defense contractors in the explosive growth of the national security state. The motivation is money, and the systematic looting of the U.S. Treasury to benefit private industry, which may ultimately prove the undoing of our democracy.President Eisenhower, in his now famous farewell address in 1960, warned us all against the gaining of unwarranted influence by the military-industrial establishment. He saw the dangers posed by policies being formulated and operations being conducted by our military and intelligence agencies when the primary benefits flowed to those with an economic stake in the outcomes, rather than acting in the best interests of our citizenry.Anyone interested in learning how we have gotten to this sad stage, with no real prospects for change from one administration to the next, should read this book.

As a political science student, I genuinely enjoyed this book. Michael Glennon does a great job in analyzing how our national security apparatus truly functions. His Bagehot inspired categorization of Madisonian Institutions and the Trumanite network is a great foundation upon which this analysis is built. Moreover, his analysis is thorough both in its depth and breadth - he cites decades worth of national security decisions and pairs them with very specific policy enactments to show how the national security apparatus really "works". Glennon details the specific incentive structures that are in place that yield the results that we all read about in the news. I was also pleasantly surprised to see how he ties in the issue of an uninformed electorate - arguably the biggest elephant in the room when discussing reasons behind a "crumbling" american political system - to how the Trumanite network has obtained such unprecedented and omnipotent power in the past few decades. A must read for anyone who really wants to know "how it works"!
