Had been looking for a translation like this for a long long time. Was so glad to find this book. Carefully avoids any show of emotion or bhakti, which is expected in books associated with this topic; strictly according to the meanings of the original text; leaves the interpretation to the reader, at some places with suggestions and possible alternative meanings. What adds value to the book is the original Sanskrit text. Highly highly recommended.

The House Between Tides: A Novel, by Sarah Maine

Review

“Scotland’s Outer Hebrides provides the sensuous setting for [this] impressive debut…[a] beautifully crafted novel.” (Publishers Weekly)Maine skillfully balances a Daphne du Maurier atmosphere with a Barbara Vine-like psychological mystery...The setting emerges as the strongest personality in this compelling story, evoking passion in the characters as fierce as the storms which always lurk on the horizon. A debut historical thriller which deftly blends classic suspense with modern themes." (Kirkus Reviews)“Maine contrasts Hetty’s present-day consternation with the past story of Blake and his wife, delivering details at a perfectly suspenseful pace… the historic mystery will keep readers guessing right up until the end.” (Booklist)“The stark setting proves to be the perfect backdrop for Maine's well-plotted debut. The novel weaves secrets from both past and present with a bit of a romance and the feel of the Outer Hebrides to build a mystery that is as eerie and complex as the house of Muirlan itself.” (Shelf Awareness)“Reminiscent of the Gothics of the 1970s, THE HOUSE BETWEEN TIDES by Sarah Maine takes the reader on a stimulating stroll through two time periods, igniting the senses with a classic mysterious aura. The moodiness of the location easily placed my mind on holiday in the past while unraveling the mystery in the present.” (Romance Junkies)"Evocative...Much is left up to the reader to interpret, which showcases the skill of this debut author. The novel is a haunting story of loss and longing in an unusual setting. Recommended." (Historical Novels Review)“I really enjoyed the ambiance of the book… It felt like a great harmony between the environment and the mystery taking place. You could feel the mood of people in keeping with the landscape, the mood adapting to the elements... A very enjoyable atmospheric novel, spanning over a few generations, rich in landscape descriptions and suspense." (Words and Peace)“The House Between Tides reminds me of books written by Phyllis Whitney, Victoria Holt or Mary Stewart in that they all have the same style of writing, moody, dark and atmospheric stories that involve romance and mystery where the male characters are often brooding and the women are bound to fall in love them in spite of their moodiness and mystery." (Celtic Lady’s Reviews)

It is a breathtaking read. It is a mix of Susanna Kearsley and Daphne Du Maurier. It is a mystery and romance covering two time periods. There are windswept coastal waters of Scotland and an abandoned home on an island. I read this book in one day! I was guessing until the final pages. My heart is racing because I simply don't know what to say about how gripping this book is. Please let it be your next read.

Comparisons to Kate Morton and Daphne DuMaurier are justified, in my opinion. I don't think anyone would mean to say this author is exactly the same, but it has the flavor of those books and was very engrossing. The settings are gothic, mysterious and haunting, and the story regarding Theo Blake, the old house, and the bones underneath it kept me reading on into the night. I will definitely hope this author writes on!

I enjoy reading historical fiction, and this book has a dual storyline/timeline with both settings in Scotland. Sarah Maine did a wonderful job tying the two stories together. I was even surprised as to the identity of the body because I assumed it was another character. Another reviewer compared the author to Susanna Kearsley, and I would agree. Kearsley is one of my favorite authors. If I had one complaint about this book, it would be about the lack of transition between some paragraphs. Sudden changes from one paragraph to the next (locations and actions) with no transition as to how/why/when characters got there were confusing and distracting. Otherwise, I really liked the story and look forward to reading more of the author's work.

Many have already said this, I realise, but The House between Tides by Sarah Maine reminded me very much of Kate Morton's work. This book started a little slowly for me. I wasn't immediately engaged in either the events of 'now' or those of 1910. I liked both of our main protagonists however: the somewhat down-trodden Hetty; and the coming-into-her-own Beatrice respectively and kept turning the pages eager to learn their stories.Theo Blake's family built Muirlan House and his father uprooted locals to build his stunning white elephant in the Outer Hebrides. Although his memories of the place are bittersweet, Theo takes his new wife Beatrice there in 1910.When the book opens however, we're meeting Theo's sister Emily who's taking ownership of the house and boarding it up - entombing it in many ways - in 1945. Where it lies dormant until inherited by Hetty Deveraux over half a century later. This isn't a riveting read, but it's intriguing. The story unravelling in present day mirrors that of the early 20th century reflecting the debate between: respecting the needs and livelihoods of the local community and the area's wildlife; versus development and desires of the privileged.Read the full review on my site:[...]3.5 stars

Amazing, complex and fascinating debut. Hard to believe this is a first effort. The author uses similar approaches to her subject as Kate Morton does in her books, and this is almost as good as KM'sr "Secret Keeper:" We have two plot lines for the complex subject, one taking place in 1910 and the other in 2010. We follow the developments of both as they intertwine and it is hard to put the book down. One tends to assume certain details that appear to be indicated in the plot development only to find out that the assumption is totally wrong, when the final factual details are revealed.I highly recommend this book and I look forward to this author's further efforts. Her talents are apparent and I hope she will use them and not disappoint us.

I got this book not expecting too much. I'm not much of a romance reader, but I do like mysteries, and I'd been reading a rather boring series that I needed to take a break from, saw this for $1.99, and bought it. Then I started reading it, and basically, didn't put it down til I was done. It's not really a mystery, though there is a mystery at the heart of the novel. And there are two love stories, but not too much for this reader, possibly because the characters were so clearly drawn, and I was involved with them right away (more so with the historical couple at first than the present story line, but I warmed to that as well). The book had so much I look for in a novel: compelling, complex characters, a strong sense of place (oh, how I want to visit the Scottish coast now!), and a sense of history and justice that really kept me going. The inner (historical) story takes place in 1910/1911, and this was a time of profound change for the world in general, but esp. Britain, and I found the conflict between landowners and land users to be powerful--and while I understand the author didn't want to overwhelm the narrative with too much history, I could have taken even more (and I began to read about crofting and the croft clearances and forced emigration from Scotland after I read the book, to give me a better sense of the historical moment). It's a beautiful book, really, and I found myself unexpectedly teary at the end of it.I'm going to read the rest of this author's novels now (one out and one to come). This book was an unexpected pleasure

I enjoyed this dark book, full of grim foreboding due to a corpse found in the old island mansion. You think you know who it is, but you will be surprised. The mystery will hold your attention until the end. I had guessed myself and was dreading the big revelation of its identity. Ha! Well, this story centers on the tormented Scottish painter, Theo Blake, an unpleasant, controlling man who grew insane in later life. I was fascinated by the weaving together of the island characters in 1910 and those in 2017. The author intentionally makes Hettie, the modern-day heir to Muirland House, seem a lot like Beatrice, the unloved wide of Blake. Plus, modern-day James Cameron is so much like 1910 Cameron Forbes. You are rooting for them as the story and plotlines unfold and it ends with all loose ends being rather too neatly tied up in a pretty bow. It was not the ending I expected, but I have to admit, I was relieved. A very good read.

Review

"An enthusiastic history of one of rock music’s most significant supergroups. Rock journalist Doggett (Electric Shock: From the Gramophone to the iPhone: 125 Years of Pop Music, 2015, etc.) traces his protagonists from their origins through their early success in the Byrds (David Crosby), the Hollies (Graham Nash), and Buffalo Springfield (Stephen Stills and Neil Young). As the author shows, the Los Angeles rock scene of the late 1960s was a meeting place for nearly everyone who came to prominence in folk or rock. Prime among them was Crosby, who strutted around in a cape and whose counterculture credentials included introducing the Beatles to LSD. After one night at a popular music venue, Crosby, Stills, and Nash came together for a stoned singing party that gave birth to a new sound. With the addition of Young and the band’s appearance at Woodstock, the legend was underway as well as the melodrama of fights, breakups, reunions, and excess. Doggett frankly admits that he is a fan of the group, and he traces the band’s career from concert to concert, recording session to recording session. In addition to providing the stories behind the better-known songs, the author spends plenty of time on their lives offstage, including their liaisons with the likes of Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins. Throughout, Doggett does a solid job differentiating among the four members of the group, each an interesting, if not necessarily likable, personality. Young gets most of the blame for the group’s breakups, though with four enormous egos, everyone receives a due share. The author backs it all up with voluminous documentation, including interviews with all the participants and ample quotations from contemporary reviews of almost every record and concert, including the members’ solo projects. The narrative is eminently readable, with few dull passages, even when the protagonists are sulking during one of the band’s numerous fights. A must for CSNY fans and anyone who remembers the era when it ruled the pop charts."    —Starred Kirkus Review"Plenty of nuggets for the diehard fan...a more than welcome addition to the band’s bookshelf." Good book for agents that want to "explode" their business but not very helpful for those of us that just want to be an agent and do a good job. Most of the information was how to add employees to your business model. The better book for a realtor is "The seven levels of communication" by Michael J.Mayer; great hands on learning advise!!!!

This book sat on my bookshelf for three months before I even cracked the cover. I wish I opened it sooner. This is a great guide to becoming a successful agent and building a lasting business. The models within are scalable, so if you prefer to set more modest goals and then progress to a million, this book will get you there. This book helps me plan my activities to benefit me now, while being a road map to get my business where I want it to be in the future.

I have yet to obtain my real estate license but purchased this book to give me insight before I get started. This book can be of huge value for any entrepreneur regardless of industry. I am certain my future success will be propelled from the knowledge and wisdom in Gary Keller's book.

As a brand new agent, I read this book hoping to get tips and tricks of the trade. While I did get some great advice for is to grow my business I was hoping to get a few more basic starting out instructions.

I would suggest every new agent read this book.

Explains step by step how to make it BIG in the Real Estate industry. Very easy to read, and the author drills it in your head on what to focus on: Leads, Listings, and Leverage! 7th Level here I come!!

Book has a lot of great advice that can be for any selling career not just real estate. I started to read it and stopped and started over just so I can highlight and take notes! Worth every penny!

Superb book. From the mindset development to specific information on how to create, scale, and maintain a real estate sales business, this is a great book.

Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons: Nature, Literature, and the Arts, by Haruo Shirane

Review

Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons provides a compelling account of how Japan has appropriated, interpreted, and valued nature over the centuries. Haruo Shirane's wide-ranging study tracks the culture of nature in Japan and especially the central role of waka in constructing a vision of nature that influenced all the arts. In its breadth, depth, and accessibility, his book is of great value not only to scholars and students of Japan but also to anyone interested in the intersections of art and nature. (Andrew M. Watsky, Princeton University)A tour de force. Haruo Shirane synthesizes the long and complicated encoding of flora, fauna, toponyms, and annual events of the Japanese landscape and calendar, untangling their synchronic connections and their historical development from the eighth to the nineteenth centuries, from the small cuckoo (hototogisu) as a harbinger of summer in the Kokinshu to the lovemaking of cats as a topic for comic haikai verse in the Edo period. Shirane's book is essential for anyone interested in virtually any genre of the traditional Japanese arts: poetry, costume, painting, noh theater, architecture, tea ceremony, flower arranging―or even Japanese sweets (wagashi)! (Joshua Mostow, University of British Columbia)'Sensitivity to nature' is one of those commonplaces about Japanese tradition that, because of its all-too-easy association with cultural nationalism, tends to set many people's teeth on edge. This engaging and impressive study provides a welcome antidote. Drawing from literary, visual, historical, and religious sources, Haruo Shirane cuts through the clichés to uncover multiple, evolving, and sometimes surprising dimensions of the Japanese relationship with nature from early times to the present. (Kate Wildman Nakai, professor emerita, Sophia University)A comprehensive view of the subject, replete with fascinating detail, and full scholarly apparatus. (David Burleigh Japan Times)As accessible as it is erudite, this volume will appeal to those with interest in any aspect of the arts...Highly recommended. (Choice)A vital contribution to our understanding of the literature, art, and daily practices of Japan over the centuries. (Elizabeth Oyler Monumenta Nipponica)Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons… enables us, for the first time in English, to gain a comprehensive, systematic, and authoritatively scholarly view on how very pervasive this seasons culture is and has been since the Nara and Heian periods. (Japan Review)Shirane is a reliable guide and reading this book will enrich one's understanding of almost any Japanese artifact. (Journal of Japanese Studies)

For most Westerners, Japan today is viewed as a mecca of high technology, martial arts, video games, manga, culinary achievement, flower arranging, or fine art and design. But in taking a longer view, one that stretches back well more than a thousand years, it can be argued that Japan's most enduringly important contribution is its exquisite sensitivity to the changing seasons. In previous publications, art historians, specialists in Japanese poetry, and devotees of kimono design, among others, have all touched on this subject.Never before, however, has such a formidably-talented academic as Haruo Shirane made available in English a rigorous study of the subject. And that study is his 2012 book "Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons: Nature, Literature, and the Arts." Shirane's chronological approach demonstrates how a focus on the seasons first developed in the poetry of the Nara (710-784) and Heian (794-1185) periods and thereafter permeated ever more aspects of life as Japan itself became more sophisticated, prosperous, and modern.Readers interested in further exploring how a seasonal sensitivity shapes the lens through which the Japanese view the world may wish to acquire some of the following books: Liza Dalby's "East Wind Melts the Ice," any book of haiku arranged by season, Ivan Morris's "The World of the the Shining Prince: Court Life in Ancient Japan," and my own "Symbols of Japan: Thematic Motifs in Art and Design." For those wishing to experience the continuing influence of the four seasons in everyday life, even in today's urbanized hi-tech Japan, the following are particularly useful: bakery and sweet shops; tea ceremony venues; restaurants serving bento-box and kaiseki meals; flower shops; and stationery boutiques.

This book gives you about the understanding of true root of Japanese culture. It comes from practical life of tea culture in terms of humble and sincere attitude of life. And it also shows the true Japanese culture from Muromachi era is better influenced to the ordinary people of Japan than in Edo period.

Explains the relationship of the seasons and the winds and the sun to Japanese Art and literature and I loved it and recommend it to all.

Excellent!

Very disappointed that the beautiful color plates appear in grayscale in the Kindle edition, and that lack of proofreading of the converted file resulted in many typos, especially at the beginning of the book, which was annoying because they were so laughable: ckanoyu, kaski, skibakari, matsumuski, "([agi)" etc -Also many hyphenated words appearing mid-sentence, a common issue in converting a PDF to ebook, but easily correctable.Distracting.There is no question that this is an instant classic. It needs to look like a classic too.

It's not a book for me, it's really a jewel. Gorgeous!!!! I'm delighted when reading it since it shows a very interesting world. I'm learning a lot while reading it.It arrived in time, and that's something I also value.

The Ethics of Business: A Concise Introduction (Elements of Philosophy)

Review

For business majors planning to enter the real world, this is the most useful business ethics textbook available. (Nicholas Capaldi, Chair in Business Ethics, Loyola University of New Orleans)Gini and Marcoux have written a great short introduction to the ethics of business. By focusing on the elements of business ethics, such as rationality, exchange, trust, competition, impartiality, loyalty, and leadership to name a few, they have given us a book that can be useful from solo practitioners all the way up to CEOs of large corporations. They use plenty of example and quotes to make their case. This book can serve as a foundation for a business ethics course when supplemented by cases and other material. (John W. Dienhart, The Frank Shrontz Chair for Professional Ethics, Seattle University)This is an unusually clearly-written introduction. Gini and Marcoux are sensitive to the wide range of business ethics opinion. Especially good are their inclusion of entrepreneurial business rather than a preoccupation with large corporations and their emphasis upon achieving the good rather than bemoaning the bad. (Stephen Hicks, Chair, Philosophy Department, Rockford College)Gini and Marcoux have written an eminently readable and practical book that strikes the perfect balance of philosophical depth with accessibility to the nonphilosopher. The book demonstrates for both students and business practitioners how philosophical concepts have significant real-life implications across a wide range of everyday business situations and practices. (Joseph Desjardins, College of St. Benedict, St. John's University)This concise introduction to applied business ethics is refreshingly unlike most business ethics textbooks. While others focus primarily on negative examples of moral failure at the C-level (Enron) or blockbuster financial disasters (Bernie Madoff), Gini and Marcoux (both, Loyola Univ. Chicago) speak to the common activities of ordinary businesspeople. Their work addresses the question of what it means to be a person of character and integrity while engaged in entrepreneurial activity: buying, selling, and interacting with others. Traditional ethical philosophies (Mills's utilitarianism, Kant's duty-based and Aristotle's virtue-based ethics) are presented in a practical, nontechnical manner. The essential components of business activities are evaluated in discussions on the ethics of trust, truth, competition, loyalty, leadership, and the global marketplace. The excellent chapter titled "Work-Life Balance" raises the philosophical question of what our work is doing to us. "Even though work gives us our identity, and even if we love our jobs ... we also need an antidote to work in order to work well," it suggests. Extensive quotes and examples add clarity. Useful as primary or supplemental reading for business ethics courses. Summing Up: Recommended. (CHOICE)The Ethics of Business, by Al Gini and Alexei Marcoux (hereafter, Gini/Marcoux), is . . . spirited and insightful. (Reason Papers)
