I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports/adventure biography. First of all, the format of the book is easy to follow with two narratives, one of Alex and one of the co-author, D. Robert. At first, I wondered why Alex chose this format as he already writes decently. Then, I realized this format provided a third person perspective for the readers to appreciate the gravity of some of the accomplishment. Alex's choice of co-author definitely was superb - I have read several D. Robert's books, always enjoyed them. Secondly, aside from the obvious (but still thrilling) climbing accomplishment/adventure, Alex's sense of humor really came through. The book was very entertaining to read! Finally, I think anyone who appreciates athleticism/adventure, climber or not (I have climbed but am not an avid climber), will enjoy this book for a lot of the "lessons" are universal. A side note, I really appreciate Alex's downplaying on those "lessons" - he doesn't overstate them, but really just tells a story and lets the readers decipher whatever apply to them. It is not "preachy", even though it still inspires the audience.

I became interested in Alex Honnold after the 60 minutes story. I never forgot his name, and just got around to ordering this book for my Kindle during an extended medical leave due to surgery . I thoroughly enjoyed his descriptions of the many "rocks" he's climbed. Having never been a climber myself, I was afraid it would be too technical to hold my interest. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was fascinated by his explaining how and why he's chosen to do this with his life. I also enjoyed reading about his various climbing partners and their adventures. I wish I had heard of him before our family visited Yosemite in 2011, as I would have heeded the park stranger's invitation to spend some time in El Cap meadow with a pair of binoculars to watch the climbers.

Very well written and well balanced book, between narrative and Alex's own writing. Incredible stories that will live on forever. I love the lack of ego in this book. Not many people in this world seem to appreciate the world the way Alex does. Everything is just very honest.This is a must read for climbers and non-climbers. It is about being a good person and loving what you do. Although not everyone can have the luxury to live in a van and climb in world's most beautiful rocks, we can take part in paying Mother Nature some extra appreciation and finding a side kick of something we love aside from our jobs.Glad to have people like Alex in the world everyone to look to for inspiration. Good people are awesome.

In my youth I climbed the route Alex went up in 3 days of the hardest climbing I had ever climbed.I spent the whole book nervously reading, it’s been 25 years since I have been in the route but still remember those cruxes. The achievements Alex has made in his career are incredible. To the non-climbers the choices on routes Alex chooses to solo may seem crazy, to those of us who have climbed seriously know how insanely bold those decisions are. The only place I have ever experienced complete concentration with no outside influences was leading a pitch. I could relate to Alex’s descriptions and emotional battles. He is in a class of his own, I hope to never open a paper to find out we have lost this person.

I was surprised after reading Alone On The Wall to discover that David Roberts is a climber, because when I was reading this book, it really seemed like he didn't "get it". It didn't seem like Roberts really understood or was on board with what Honnold was and is doing--his lifestyle, his climbing, and yes, his free soloing. Maybe it was because he didn't insert his own opinion into things--a lot of Roberts' writing is just summarizing interviews with other people. But there's a ton of people out there who either don't climb or climb more conservatively who have opinions about Honnold, and if I wanted to hear that, I'd read any of the hundreds of articles about Honnold on the internet. This book was a chance to hear from Honnold and find out what he thinks, and instead Roberts' writing is about what everyone else thinks--I just don't care about that.For the parts of the book which were actually written by Honnold--a lot of what he wrote is just responding to what other people say, which yields some insights, but I'd much rather have read what Honnold wanted to say. The problem here maybe is that Honnold doesn't want to say anything--he'd rather be out climbing. Which is great--that's how he became the climber who inspires me. But it doesn't make for a great book.I'll also point out that this book was published two years ago as of this review, and was probably mostly written in the year before that. In that time, I've seen Honnold mature a lot--his interviews on TV and podcasts show a person who has had a lot of emotional and mental growth over the last few years. The Honnold who wrote passages in Alone On The Wall is not the Honnold we know today--the one who wrote this is a bit immature, a bit distracted. I get the feeling that Honnold was pressured to write this book a bit before he was really ready to be writing a book--it's a bit weird to write your story before it's over. I really hope this isn't the last book we see from Honnold, because I think if he were to write a book now or later in his life, it would be a lot better.Contrast this with The Push by Tommy Caldwell. There's a book written by an older climber who knew what he wanted to write. At the surface level, it turns out to be a book that's much less about climbing, but it's far more vulnerable and insightful, and gives readers a much better understanding of what motivated Caldwell to become one of the best climbers in the world.

Was absolutely captivated. Especially by the first 3 or 4 chapters which explain the Video shoots of Alex free-solo climbing and how he became a modern legend. Very interesting as he explains what he's thinking and his mental preparation for free soloing. Also how he approaches his climbs and general outlook on life and risk-taking. If you watch his videos on YouTube, you'll buy and read the book. What he can do on the face of sheer mountain faces is unbelievable and has to be seen to be believed.

Disappointing for a Stonewall Kitchen cookbook. Their other cookbooks are some of my favorites. This one was basic, with recipes like guacamole, popcorn with seasonings, etc. Things I think I can figure out on my own. Was hoping for some inspiration. This book doesn't have it.

This book has many interesting ideas for appetizers. I think it's best use is that it will spark your own ideas for new things to try. I have found all the Stonewall cookbooks to be very well done, enjoyable to read with tasty results.

We had a tapas party for the Rotary Club and they raved about all the recipes! One idea is to put the miniature cupcake pan upside down on a foil lined tray and form the pancetta around the OUTSIDE of the forms for perfect "pancetta cups", page 99.Happy entertaining!

i have often made a meal out of small bites and have since way before it had a name! these appetizers are not only healthy, beautiful and health conscious but creative! the 'stonewall kitchen' cookbooks are pieces of art...and mine sits atop a stack of treasured books in my kitchen. they achieve the deceiving simplicity of flavors perfectly meshed to tantalize the taste and intrigue the senses....you really will want just one more bite and, if you're lucky, one more sip to accompany it.

Love all the Stonewall books and products. I have been to the store a number of timesand get so many great ideas.

I wanted to love this. In part, the story is just hard. Lucy Maud Montgomery did not have an easy life and for someone who wrote such beloved characters, I couldn’t help wishing her story was different, even though I have read her story before. I think the book was well-researched, and the illustrations were beautiful. I believe the book has a younger intended audience, and it is written in a way that suggests it is for children, but some of the content would require care even for adults. I want to give a fair review, but I wish that the writing style contained more beauty, more flow... I think that any time we read L.M. Montgomery, even if we are reading another author’s words about her, the expectation is higher.I would recommend this book to the person looking for a factual account of her life, but not to someone who is looking for more of the worlds she shared in her books.

I purchased this book as a gift for my girlfriend, who is a big L. M. Montgomery fan, and she absolutely loved it. She couldn't stop talking about it, in fact. She loved the writing style of the biography and found the book to be very interesting.

This was interesting and informative. It is very matter of fact and easy to read. Also, the illustrations are really cute. I would recommend to anyone interested in learning basic facts about L.M. Montgomery's life.

Wonderful biography of one of the most famous authors in children's literature. This book is for anyone who has read and loved "Anne of Green Gables," and for anyone who hasn't even heard of it. Rosenberg vividly presents Maud with all her struggles and triumphs.

I really enjoyed this book. I learned things about L.M. Montgomery that I never knew before. Ms. Rosenberg did a wonderful job researching and writing it.

*I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*Instead of consuming this book, I feel like this book consumed me. I fell into it and was wholeheartedly immersed in L. M. Montgomery’s life. Even while not reading it, I still felt as though my heart and mind were with L. M. Montgomery. Certainly, I couldn’t stop talking about it, as my husband could attest. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been completely absorbed in a book, and reading this was such a wonderful experience.L. M. Montgomery, or “Maud,” as she was called, is absolutely one of my favorite authors ever. I’ve read a good chunk of her works (and she was a prolific writer!), so to learn more about her experiences and what inspired her stories–especially those of Anne Shirley and Emily–was a lovely experience to begin with. It’s clear to see that Rosenberg loves Montgomery and her stories as well, because reading this as almost as close as reading a memoir, it was so filled with empathy and emotion. I felt like I was in a conversation with a friend, talking about another friend. It was a sort of: “Did you hear about Maud? She published a book!” kind of thing. Montgomery could be one funny lady.What I most appreciated, however, was the frank discussion of mental illness. Both Montgomery and her husband seem to have had some forms of depression and anxiety, and I am so grateful to Rosenberg for tackling that head-on. The more we talk about these things, the more we share both the struggles and successes of people who live with this diseases, the more we normalize them and are able to seek help in managing them. It’s especially important for young people who might not know how to deal with what they’re feeling and what they may be experiencing to know that even those we look up to struggle with the same thing. I’m so glad this was included.This biography is magical, truly. I felt completely transported reading it and it’s been one of my absolutely favorite reads this year. Every Montgomery fan will find something to love about it, and I’m so glad I was able to learn more about L. M. Montgomery’s life and experiences. It’s about time someone on the left had the decency to repudiate the leftist attitude Walzer rejects there, the blinkered notion that we got what we deserved.Walzer makes the case for a sane global-minded commitment to human rights and shared prosperity. Rather than blather about replacing the nation-state in the name of some fool’s utopia, he focuses on how nation-states can help foster human flourishing across the globe — and what role a “decent left” should play in helping that happen.Above all, it is vitally important, especially with 2020 coming, to note that Walzer’s notion of the left confronts the world as it is now and also the abominations past so-called left regimes caused. He forthrightly condemns the toxic outgrowths of Marxist-Leninism that made the left synonymous, in the twentieth century, with dictatorship and massacre. He received his undergraduate training at MIT, his PhD from the University of California, San Diego, and did postdoctoral work at Stanford. A leading researcher in biopolymer statistical mechanics and protein folding, he has been the President of the Biophysical Society and received the Hans Neurath Award from the Protein Society in 1998. SARINA BROMBERG received her BFA at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, her PhD in molecular biophysics from Wesleyan University, and her postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco. She writes, edits and illustrates scientific textbooks.

When I picked up this book, I was expecting a book on stat mech. This book is not so much a treatment of stat mech. as a very well put together course in physical chemistry. It covers all of the basics from thermodynamics to solutions of electrolytes to polymer chemistry. It does all of this in a very approachable manner that gives the reader a thorough understanding without too much gory detail. Also, the terms in the equations are generally well explained which is a nice touch for an introductory text such as this given that too many books either simply let the equations stand for themselves or define a variable once then reference it hundreds of pages later without reintroducing it. This is an excellent book for self study and leaves a good foundation for readers to move on to more advanced stat mech. books such as those by Pathria, Statistical Mechanics, or Hill, An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics (Dover Books on Physics).

This book is a triumph of technical writing. Ken Dill possesses an extraordinary ability to distill complex technical concepts down to the cogent bits necessary to understand the physics of the situation. The maxim, "make it as simple as possible, but not simpler" definitely applies here. The only major challenge with this book is that a reader may come away with a notion of inflated comprehension. This is not a fault...just a byproduct of the big contrast between the clarity of the Dill (and Bromberg) text and the other, technically obfuscated, textbooks and articles in the field.Easily the best (introductory) textbook on statistical physics that I have encountered, and the only one that I can heartily recommend to a student or non-specialist.

You probably aren't picking this up for leisurely reading. So, good luck. It's a tough work but you need it if you are going into chemistry.

I used this excellent book by Ken Dill for my stat mech class along with Chandler. Dill eases the student through the sometimes painful world of stat mech. The many examples and pictures help the understanding of material. Also, derivations are shown in baby steps so that math and physics deprived students like me can handle the material. Chandler is more eloquent but for a student unfamiliar with the material, it's way above my head at times. The two books are very complementary.

The book gives a overview for statistical mechanics in biophysics. It will be an application oriented book for physicists. The way the book is written might be bit daunting for people completely new to physical sciences. It is an important book for biophysicts and can be used to brush up concepts for people who are already into the field

Dill's book is the perfect introduction to statistical mechanics, especially for those in the biological sciences. I'm a graduate student and read his book before McQuarrie's - which worked out very well. He uses lattice models a lot so that more difficult topics become intuitive. For some, the book may be a little basic. But for those who don't have a solid background in probability or physical chemistry, this book is perfect. Even for the more advanced student, this book is truly a fun read and can inspire creativity.

I'm a grad student in chemistry, and I adore this text. Assuming you have a basic calculus and thermo background, this is all one needs as a reference to accessing more advanced / specialized texts. Even at that, the first few chapters provide a useful refresher on vector calculus and chemical potentials, etc, though I wouldn't rely on this text as your soul source to learn about those more fundamental topics.

Great book. I finally understand entropy and thermodynamics! This is very helpful in my work with the binding and stability of proteins.I have a BA in biochemistry.
