I wanted to love this. In part, the story is just hard. Lucy Maud Montgomery did not have an easy life and for someone who wrote such beloved characters, I couldn’t help wishing her story was different, even though I have read her story before. I think the book was well-researched, and the illustrations were beautiful. I believe the book has a younger intended audience, and it is written in a way that suggests it is for children, but some of the content would require care even for adults. I want to give a fair review, but I wish that the writing style contained more beauty, more flow... I think that any time we read L.M. Montgomery, even if we are reading another author’s words about her, the expectation is higher.I would recommend this book to the person looking for a factual account of her life, but not to someone who is looking for more of the worlds she shared in her books.

I purchased this book as a gift for my girlfriend, who is a big L. M. Montgomery fan, and she absolutely loved it. She couldn't stop talking about it, in fact. She loved the writing style of the biography and found the book to be very interesting.

This was interesting and informative. It is very matter of fact and easy to read. Also, the illustrations are really cute. I would recommend to anyone interested in learning basic facts about L.M. Montgomery's life.

Wonderful biography of one of the most famous authors in children's literature. This book is for anyone who has read and loved "Anne of Green Gables," and for anyone who hasn't even heard of it. Rosenberg vividly presents Maud with all her struggles and triumphs.

I really enjoyed this book. I learned things about L.M. Montgomery that I never knew before. Ms. Rosenberg did a wonderful job researching and writing it.

The author of Anne of Green Gables; wanted to hear the author’s life story after taking a tour to Prince Edward Island Canada.Very good book and well done story.

*I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*Instead of consuming this book, I feel like this book consumed me. I fell into it and was wholeheartedly immersed in L. M. Montgomery’s life. Even while not reading it, I still felt as though my heart and mind were with L. M. Montgomery. Certainly, I couldn’t stop talking about it, as my husband could attest. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been completely absorbed in a book, and reading this was such a wonderful experience.L. M. Montgomery, or “Maud,” as she was called, is absolutely one of my favorite authors ever. I’ve read a good chunk of her works (and she was a prolific writer!), so to learn more about her experiences and what inspired her stories–especially those of Anne Shirley and Emily–was a lovely experience to begin with. It’s clear to see that Rosenberg loves Montgomery and her stories as well, because reading this as almost as close as reading a memoir, it was so filled with empathy and emotion. I felt like I was in a conversation with a friend, talking about another friend. It was a sort of: “Did you hear about Maud? She published a book!” kind of thing. I was joyous over Maud’s triumphs and saddened over how much loss and sadness she had within her life, but it’s a comfort to know that for all her struggles, she loved her writing, and those stories live on for us today thanks to her.Rosenberg gives a comprehensive overview of Maud’s life, from early childhood to late adulthood. I love that she was able to include direct quotes from the personal journal of L. M. Montgomery, which added a great touch of personality and authenticity to situation. It’s nicely paced–I never felt as though too much or too little time was spent on one thing. I LOVED some of the humorous anecdotes told. L. M. Montgomery could be one funny lady.What I most appreciated, however, was the frank discussion of mental illness. Both Montgomery and her husband seem to have had some forms of depression and anxiety, and I am so grateful to Rosenberg for tackling that head-on. The more we talk about these things, the more we share both the struggles and successes of people who live with this diseases, the more we normalize them and are able to seek help in managing them. It’s especially important for young people who might not know how to deal with what they’re feeling and what they may be experiencing to know that even those we look up to struggle with the same thing. I’m so glad this was included.This biography is magical, truly. I felt completely transported reading it and it’s been one of my absolutely favorite reads this year. Every Montgomery fan will find something to love about it, and I’m so glad I was able to learn more about L. M. Montgomery’s life and experiences. Thank you so much to Liz Rosenberg for writing this and Candlewick Press for publishing this. It’s extraordinary.

But only the latter would dismiss his arguments out of hand, and that is because he is reasonable and practical, not given over to blind ideological sloganeering. At one crucial juncture he levels well-deserved criticism at Noam Chomsky for his reaction to 9/11. It’s about time someone on the left had the decency to repudiate the leftist attitude Walzer rejects there, the blinkered notion that we got what we deserved.Walzer makes the case for a sane global-minded commitment to human rights and shared prosperity. Rather than blather about replacing the nation-state in the name of some fool’s utopia, he focuses on how nation-states can help foster human flourishing across the globe — and what role a “decent left” should play in helping that happen.Above all, it is vitally important, especially with 2020 coming, to note that Walzer’s notion of the left confronts the world as it is now and also the abominations past so-called left regimes caused. He forthrightly condemns the toxic outgrowths of Marxist-Leninism that made the left synonymous, in the twentieth century, with dictatorship and massacre. KEN A. DILL is Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco. He received his undergraduate training at MIT, his PhD from the University of California, San Diego, and did postdoctoral work at Stanford. A leading researcher in biopolymer statistical mechanics and protein folding, he has been the President of the Biophysical Society and received the Hans Neurath Award from the Protein Society in 1998. SARINA BROMBERG received her BFA at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, her PhD in molecular biophysics from Wesleyan University, and her postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco. When I picked up this book, I was expecting a book on stat mech. This book is not so much a treatment of stat mech. as a very well put together course in physical chemistry. It covers all of the basics from thermodynamics to solutions of electrolytes to polymer chemistry. It does all of this in a very approachable manner that gives the reader a thorough understanding without too much gory detail. Also, the terms in the equations are generally well explained which is a nice touch for an introductory text such as this given that too many books either simply let the equations stand for themselves or define a variable once then reference it hundreds of pages later without reintroducing it. This is an excellent book for self study and leaves a good foundation for readers to move on to more advanced stat mech. books such as those by Pathria, Statistical Mechanics, or Hill, An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics (Dover Books on Physics).

This book is a triumph of technical writing. Ken Dill possesses an extraordinary ability to distill complex technical concepts down to the cogent bits necessary to understand the physics of the situation. The maxim, "make it as simple as possible, but not simpler" definitely applies here. The only major challenge with this book is that a reader may come away with a notion of inflated comprehension. This is not a fault...just a byproduct of the big contrast between the clarity of the Dill (and Bromberg) text and the other, technically obfuscated, textbooks and articles in the field.Easily the best (introductory) textbook on statistical physics that I have encountered, and the only one that I can heartily recommend to a student or non-specialist.

You probably aren't picking this up for leisurely reading. So, good luck. It's a tough work but you need it if you are going into chemistry.

I used this excellent book by Ken Dill for my stat mech class along with Chandler. Dill eases the student through the sometimes painful world of stat mech. The many examples and pictures help the understanding of material. Also, derivations are shown in baby steps so that math and physics deprived students like me can handle the material. Chandler is more eloquent but for a student unfamiliar with the material, it's way above my head at times. The two books are very complementary.

The book gives a overview for statistical mechanics in biophysics. It will be an application oriented book for physicists. The way the book is written might be bit daunting for people completely new to physical sciences. It is an important book for biophysicts and can be used to brush up concepts for people who are already into the field

Dill's book is the perfect introduction to statistical mechanics, especially for those in the biological sciences. I'm a graduate student and read his book before McQuarrie's - which worked out very well. He uses lattice models a lot so that more difficult topics become intuitive. For some, the book may be a little basic. But for those who don't have a solid background in probability or physical chemistry, this book is perfect. Even for the more advanced student, this book is truly a fun read and can inspire creativity.

I'm a grad student in chemistry, and I adore this text. Assuming you have a basic calculus and thermo background, this is all one needs as a reference to accessing more advanced / specialized texts. Even at that, the first few chapters provide a useful refresher on vector calculus and chemical potentials, etc, though I wouldn't rely on this text as your soul source to learn about those more fundamental topics.

Great book. I finally understand entropy and thermodynamics! This is very helpful in my work with the binding and stability of proteins.I have a BA in biochemistry.

This book is a good outline to study for the Oracle Certified SQL Expert exam. I rated it as a guide not a complete book because the author clearly makes that assertion and also because of the price. It is by no means a singular source for preparation and study. I used this book as a guide more than a source of more comprehensive study materials.First, I start reading through a chapter and look at the examples. If you are honest with yourself, almost all readers will see that they will need to come up with more examples to fully understand the topics in depth. You can play with examples and alter them with the schema provided by the author's website to develop a deeper understanding.Second, I go to the Oracle documentation, which is really good. But, you will still need to cook up some more examples inspired by the Oracle docs. While toying with the examples and constructing your own, you will find ambiguities in the documentation when statements are made and examples are not given.Here is one that I think is a good example of having to dig deeper. It covers advanced SQL topics in more depth. I always read a topic from this other book as I come upon topics in this book/guide. Then I play with and alter all of the exampls.There are also many sample exams online. If you decide to use them, beware. You must test each question and answer interactively in SQL*Plus by creating tables and writing queries. Otherwise, you can be mislead. These online sample tests can do more harm than good. Also, if the Brain Dump is considered harmful to the certification by Oracle, Oracle can take punitive action against you. This includes decertification and even stiffer penalties. Oracle recommends you test the brain dump by searching the domain/url of the website selling the brain dumps at http://www.certguard.com/search.asp.Again, use this book as a guide. Fill in the blanks with another source and the Oracle online docs.Again:1. Read each topic in this book.2. Test each query.3. Alter the queries to test your knowledge.4. Look at the Oracle Docs for each topic.5. Test the information by creating tables and test queries.6. Read from a deeper source book.7. Test the information by creating tables and test queries.If you do the work, you will not only pass but you will truly raise your understanding of SQL and Oracle peculiarities.

With 17+ yrs of Oracle Development experience, I decided to step up and get certified as an Oracle Developer (not DBA) and knew that just my work experience would not be enough to pass the exam. So in researching I found the 3 developer tracks to get certified and this was one of them and thus this book I purchased.Although the book is short in length of pages, re-reading each chapter as I read it, took me a while (on weekends) and it reinforced what I already knew and exposed me to features of Oracle SQL that I never used in my work experience (i.e. ROLLUP, CUBE). But having said that I now understand those concepts, and they can serve me well in the future.This is an excellent study guide and I also went to Matthew's blog where you can get insights into "how" to study for this exam and "how" to take the exam. And heed his advice.....use OTHER source material in addition to this guide to help in your exam.I'm now reading Steve O'Hearn's big "OCA Oracle Database SQL Certified Expert Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-047) and once I finish that book I will come back to this Study Guide to refresh my memory.I highly recommend this book and it will be more valuable to seasoned Oracle Developers (5+ yrs of work experience).

I can't speak for everyone else's expectations....butWhen you consider the subject matter and the intended audience (Oracle Database Exam Takers)...This book delivers 100%.... This is an EXCELLENT study guide for this exam and it's worth every penny of it's purchase price. In fact, this book is a bargain!OK, as others have mentioned, it is not an "exam guide" per se. There are no practice exam questions etc. and they are right, this book should not be your only exam resource.However, as a study guide, it is a very useful, and very well thought out. All of the information presented is relevant to the exam. It is very practical and its presented in a concise, easy to read and digest format. There is no fluff or filler. Just a great study guide, which I believe is what it's supposed to be...I have no problem giving Mr. Morris a high-five here.... Great job! Highly recommended!!

Ricky Jay is fascinated not just with sleight of hand and magic, but with the history of the art form. The story of Matthias Buchinger left me wanting more. But alas there probably is no more, as clearly Ricky Jay loved and respected his subject. If there way more he would have found it.The artwork and drawings are excellent, as is the paper and quality of the printing.

I have always had an interest in human oddities and exceptionalism. I purchased this book after reading elsewhere about Matthew Buchinger, who was born without arms or legs yet could write, draw, bowl, play musical instruments and more; and usually better than a person with no limitations. This book details his fascinating story and those of many others with amazing and unusual skills.I found it fascinating. If you have any interest in the odd and unusual as well as exceptional human and animal abilities you will enjoy every page of this book

I'm one of those gullible people who doesn't want to know HOW it works - I just want to watch it work. Bought this on the advice of several magician friends, and was not disappointed. A wonderful, fun book, well written, and even informative.

This is a very fun book to read, and also informative if you are interested in quirky historical facts. I purchased this copy as a gift for my grandson, who can truly appreciate smart, dedicated pigs and other such traveling circus oddities. They were a product of the era, and it is entertaining and interesting to learn this little bit of history.

I really enjoy Ricky Jay's acumen as a storyteller, as much as his brilliant magic skills. This book represents the level of detail and history that accompanies the unusual people and talents that are it's subjects.
