The big note to start this review is that if you watched the movie, fine—it was entertaining and you gotta love the actors. However, if you want the real scoop on the real Monuments Men, you must read the book. I’m not sure why Hollywood (does most of what it does) decided to change the characters or make light of the contributions put forth by Rose Valland by intimating her having a crush on Matt Damon’s character. The Monuments Men were courageous and enterprising, pushing to be in active war zones in their pursuit of art of every kind. They worked closely with residents and a broad array of military personnel. Where the bigwigs so often took the credit—shock—these were the men behind the scenes doing their job and saving millions of pieces of art from the destruction of Hitler’s madness. The book follows the team from their inception to the close of their work. The author, Robert M. Edsel, did a brilliant job solidly taking us along the path of the battles while not losing sight of the point of the story. You may find yourself doing what I did throughout the book—gasping in horror as more and more of what Hitler was doing comes to light. I knew about his confiscation of artwork from everyone, everywhere, and yet I was astounded to find out even more of his evil egomaniacal ways. There are descriptions of the men—and Rose—that I noted along the way, James Rorimer, “He had no practice in failure, and he had no intention of starting now.” Ms. Valland, “Destiny is not one push, she thought as she waited to cross a quiet street on that cold Paris evening years later, but a thousand small moments that through insight and hard work you line up in the right direction, like a magnet does with metal shavings.” You’ll enjoy reading about Harry Ettlinger’s journey with the Monuments Men. A German Jew with American citizenship, he served bravely along with the others. George Stout, “’The sun is fine and, after the rat race, I begin to remember that I am myself and not merely a set of functions.’” Having been blessed with the experience of standing in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam—a haven of art—reading that paintings were taken from there made me sad and appreciate at all that was saved. It took them six years for the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives to return what they’d found to the proper owners. This book reads like an adventure story and will keep you interested the entire way through. If you like history and heroes, read this book, don’t just watch the movie.

Priceless treasures were pillaged from the museums and galleries of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and other European nations. All property belonging to Jews were taken. Hitler's dream was to create an enormous museum that would be the envy of the entire world. Instead he launched the most destructive war in history.The allies were aware of the cultural heritage in the areas that they would be fighting. This is why the MFAA was created. The original MFAA officers were tasked with traveling into the war zones and identifying historic sites that needed to be preserved. The stories of what these men accomplished is truly amazing. Time after time they were able to save important buildings from being destroyed.As the book progresses we see another dimension of their work. They began to investigate the Nazi looting. Their job shifted from simply protecting buildings from destruction to locating stolen works of art. At times the book resembles an action thriller story. The theft of priceless works of art. The heroic civilians who work undercover to spy on the Nazis. The small band of men rushing from place to place to save these priceless objects.I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the subject, I enjoyed the writing, I enjoyed everything about it. Robert Edsel has done an excellent job of sharing this important story with us. Perhaps there is no greater evidence of the statement that those who do not study history are bound to repeat it. We never studied the important work of the Monuments Men. As a result the allies were not prepared when Iraq was invaded in 2003. The looting of those priceless antiquities could have been avoided by simply employing a group like the MFAA. Perhaps this book will help to raise awareness so that tragedies like the Iraq museum will not happen again.

I have heard ms godfrey radio and seen her on tv so am somewhat familiar with her work. I am not entirely sure why I decided to to purchase it especially in light of the cover photo. I was totally terrified by werewolf movies as a child. I looked at the table of contents and decided I would likely skip most of the water monster section as it did not strike me as of much interest.I got started reading and found the whole thing quite engrossing. the dog/wolf man section of course scared me silly. I even read all of the water monster section. the st john's river gater man was pretty creepy.the book is well written, moves at a pace to keep one from getting board, and leaves it to the reader what to take seriously. ms godfrey injects possible mundane causes along with the unusual possible explanations for the various creatures. she has a subtle wit. do not read it alone, late at night, sitting near window. I tried. I put it up and finished it in the broad light of day.

An enjoyable book if you like this kind of stuff, which I do. My only disappointments are the amount of time dedicated to sightings of so-called sea monsters, and the fact that the book in my view just tries to cover way too much ground.For me, sea serpent tales and stories from "way back when" are just not very intriguing, nor are all the well-intended attempts to categorize the various "monsters". I think it serves to slow down the flow of the book, and that is why I gave it three stars rather than four, or five. However, I admit that is just my personal preference; your mileage may vary.If you like off-beat, escapist, speculative, semi-spooky fare, as I do, you would most likely dig this book.

I enjoyed this book very much. There are lots of detailed eye witness accounts, and it examines a large range of cryptids. The author doesn't try to sensationalize the subject matter, and she gives a well written and level headed analysis. I like her underlying assumption that strange creatures do exist, and she gives eye witnesses the benefit of the doubt that they *did* see and/or experience something out of the ordinary. She then puts the reports in the context of similar reports, and presents background details about the areas where the occurrences took place. I like that she looks at the "phenomenon" of the experiences as a whole, and that they're possibly related in ways we don't yet understand. She is open minded in her ideas of explaining these occurrences, while also remaining well-grounded and professional. This is a very well written, serious, and unsensationalized book about a topic that is, unfortunately, too often marginalized and not taken seriously. My thanks to the author for providing this thoughtful, and entertaining, book! I look forward to reading her other books.

This is an entertaining look at monster lore in the united states, although I'm not sure I can take it quite a seriously a the author intends it. I like hearing the popular legends and stories that come from various places and thought this book was fun to read, but I'm not sure I believe that most of the accounts mentioned in here have a basis in fact. I believe that the author is recounting the things she was told honestly enough, but I fear there are some cases of mistaken identity when it comes to the creatures. If not, and these really are true and exact relations, then I may have to think twice about going outdoors at night or driving a lonely highway on my own.Overall, this is a fun read with a lot of things to make you wonder about what we really know about the natural...or maybe, unnatural word around us.

The book opens, for example, with “Part One: Monsters by Air”, beginning with “Chapter 1. Feathered Fiends” before moving into tales of Bigclaw, the Micmac Culloo and other historical Big Birds. In a language that is conversational and a tone that is suggests a suspension of disbelief, the writer comes across as neither pandering nor naïve. Godfrey clearly lays out the experiences of individuals in a manner that evokes each the erie mood fo each encounter.One of the book’s chief accomplishments, beyond being entertaining, is taking advantage of opportunities to add additional layers of insight to those topics readers might incorrectly presume they have heard everything about. I purchased this for my daughter, who is only a freshman in high school but, like many of her friends, already stressed about getting into a good college. They seem to believe that unless they load up their schedules with AP and Honors courses, earn straight As, and spend every hour outside of the classroom engaged in the "right" extracurricular activities (student council, robotics = good, art club, choir = bad),, the dream of attending a good college will never come true. Cal Newport, a professor at Carnegie Mellon, provides very different advice in this book -- encouraging students to actually create more free time in their schedules to be open to new experiences, and follow their passions and interests in exploring opportunities that come their way, rather than cramming their schedules full of activities that may spark little joy and not be aligned with interests. Professor Newport's advice will certainly result in a more fun, less stressful high school experience -- it will also make you a more interesting person, the kind of person many colleges would want to have on campus.As a middle-aged woman with no intention of applying to colleges any time soon, I read this book through and found it quite interesting and full of useful guidance on keeping yourself open to opportunities and new experiences and being willing to pay your dues and establish your own credibility within a closed organization -- lots of useful tips here, whether you are 16 or 56. Newport is a good, clear, writer, and the book is full of examples of student successes. Many of the success stories seem daunting at first glance -- not everyone is going to write a best-seller or start a million-dollar company -- but every student can find a unique path to pursue.I highly recommend this for any high school student who has a very rigid and daunting notion of what it will take to get into college. And I recommend it for parents of such students.

***THE BOTTOM LINE***I definitely recommend this book. It has good, unconventional advice on how to succeed as a high school student without being a social reject. This advice will probably NOT be common sense to the type-A students out there who have been raised thinking the successful students do homework from 6p-12a every night. If you know a student who wants to get into an elite university, this book provides evidenced techniques for succeeding toward that end.***A FULLER REVIEW***I picked this book up for my brother, who's in high school. Secretly, I--being a university Freshman--wanted to read it too. The book's lessons can be life-changing if you listen and have faith in Newport's advice.I was the opposite of relaxed in high-school. I was stressed, involved in service clubs I didn't care about, and taking 6 AP courses each semester my senior year. I got a 30 on my ACT, which was certainly nothing spectacular in the eyes of most elite schools. Not surprisingly, my laundry list of unremarkable endeavors, A average in AP courses, and mediocre standardized test scores did NOT get me into Harvard, MIT, Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia...(seriously, the list of elite schools to which I applied and was rejected is embarrassingly long). This book explains, in explicit detail, why my attempt at getting into the elite universities was flawed, and it also explains the optimal way to try to get into elite universities.For high-school students, the book gives excellent advice for lowering stress (e.g. stop working at a certain time each day, do some thinking/reading in solitude, don't give up your entire life for school, etc.). The book also gives excellent advice for improving grades (i.e. note-taking methods, studying strategies, etc.) and advice for doing interesting things outside the classroom. It is a very balanced approach to high-school life that, when executed correctly, will make a student more impressive AND leave her with more free time than the alternative (i.e. my approach described above).For the general public, this book contains valuable lessons about creating a more interesting life. The rules still apply, if you're creative enough to seek the applications. Not working past a certain point in the day, pursuing endeavors that are innovative, and cultivating a reading habit are among the many broadly applicable tips Newport gives throughout the book.My main critique of the book is that it doesn't explicitly spell out how much of your free time should be used for interesting pursuits versus totally social activity (e.g. hanging out with friends). I suppose the author leaves it to you to discern that Friday and Saturday nights are good times to interact with other humans.This book was definitely worth the few days it took me to read through it. If you're interested in becoming interesting (and perhaps getting into an elite university), this book will spell the process out for you.

As a college consultant, I share this book with my clients. It is correct in its content and is written in a very readable style. It's a little on the long side for some teens but it needs to be in order to cover all that's needed. They've really benefited from it and it helps me convey to them the whole picture of what a superstar looks like. The many examples of ways to shine help inspire ideas, too.

woo bought this in 2010. It is 2014, and I completely forgot to write the review I meant to write: I GOT INTO COLLEGE! And not just any college, but an IVY LEAGUE! Great book. Also liked his "How to be a straight-A student" book. Read it, follow it, and you will succeed (insert thumbs up emojji here).

This book has AMAZING advice for the current generation that wants to get into Ivy league schools. If only I had followed this book when high school started... my life would be so much better. Although it has great advice, if one does not follow it, one will not accomplish anything. I still believe someone can change their life if they put their mind into it.

I'm about a third of the way through this book. It is easy to read and presents information in an interesting narrative, with relevant personal stories. It is geared towards students who pressure themselves to succeed. It lends a fresh perspective on the value of allowing time to simply pursue what interests them, not doing things because they hope will impress college admissions officers. Many very bright students with loads of extracurriculars compete for select colleges, but this book says that it is the student who is the interesting person, who has found an area that excites them, which can only be found if the student is not overscheduled, who will catch the interest of admissions officers reviewing hundreds of applications.

I read this book before heading to Norway on a ten-day tour. I wanted to learn a bit about the culture ahead of time, and I discovered this book. Eric writes with a sense of humor about the year he and his wife spent in Trondheim, Norway, attempting to fit in to the local culture. Because he and his wife Katy are American, I figured their perspectives on the cultural differences might be similar to mine, and that was true. Whether or not you are heading to Scandinavia, if you have an interest in Norway and its people, this would be an enjoyable read.

A young man and pregnant wife move to Trondheim, Norway for a year of research. We know about the relatives who came here; this is the experience of one of us who goes there and finds the Norwegians just as strange as the Americans must have been to my grandparents. Along the way we learn about their health care system, their social mores (“Janteloven”), their food and Aquavit, the meat bus to Sweden, what to do when the sun doesn’t come up and the Home Land. Absolutely delightful.

Each chapter heading is a string of one to four hanging fish (like cod drying). They are of two sizes, and the smaller are of three shadings. They form a repeating sequence of six patterns. Has anyone decoded them?

I enjoyed the book very much. I could not put it down, I love reading fish out of water stories. The only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars is the fact that it left me wanting more. I felt like there was a whole other books worth of material he left out. And no pictures in the kindle version, but i'm sure that was the publishers decision.

This narrative describes the experiences of an American couple living in Norway. Their description and reaction to the local customs are interesting for other Americans who plan to visit this country.

I have read this book a couple of times and also sent it as a gift to a relative. Who knew Norway is oil-rich? I didn't! The book gives good insight into modern Norwegian culture. It is funny and very interesting as the author and his wife try to make there way in their new (ancestral) homeland. For instance: some Norwegians bundle their babies up and put them outside to sleep! I have been sleeping with my window open since I read this...evidently cold air is good for you. And I am desperate to try porridge! You will enjoy this book.

Super good read. Well written. My grandfather immigrated from Norway and I am always looking for more and more info and personal views and insights to the people and culture that is my hertitage - this book provided that! Takke!

I loved this book! It was cute and funny and a great light read while my dad, my husband, and I were traipsing around Norway this summer.
