I purchased this guidebook as well as the Lonely planet Syria and Lebanon guidebook. I stayed with family so I can't comment on the lodging or restaurant recommendations. I used both guidebooks primarily for cultural insights and sightseeing recommendations.The LP by far packs more information into each page, and I love the advice on how to get everywhere!Also, the map included in this guide is pretty worthless. It is an interesting read, but not a valuable travel guide.
I respect everyone's First Amendment right to spew whatever kind of nonsense they want, including anti-Israel propaganda. But the place for that kind of screed is not a travel guide. Which is what makes Globetrotter's "Lebanon" by Moira McCrossan and Hugh Taylor and published by Globe Pequot so problematic.No fewer than a dozen times throughout the book do the authors quote dubious United Nations resolutions alleging wrongdoing by Israel. When was the last time you saw any UN resolutions cited in a Fodor's guide? Never. And that's the way it should be.The warm and fuzzy descriptions of Hezbollah also have no place in a guide that should stick to describing the sights, not promoting a political agenda.And the coup de grâce is on page 119 where in describing Beaufort Castle in Southern Lebanon they write "More recently it was used by the Zionist Occupying Forces of the Israeli Army." This kind of bias has no place in a travel guide.Putting aside where you stand on Middle East politics this book is clearly anti-Israel. Authors and publishers who can't leave their prejudices at home ought not to be writing travel guides.And the public ought not to buy it.
