When my migraines began to turn the corner and become chronic I began to search for some answers. I had been aware of, and mostly faithful to, the low tyramine diet the author refers to. While I had ID'd some major triggers - smoked meats, MSG, pepperoni -that would make me sick very quickly - I never focused on the subtler ones (nuts, citrus, my beloved kombucha to name a few) that can take days to strike.I ran across this book on a FB migraine page and hoped it could offer some fresh ideas. It has done that and more for me. I jumped into the diet cold turkey. Since there are others in my household - my approach was to designate one cupboard, plus one fridge & freezer shelf just for "Mom's foods." I have not had sugar cravings (my achilles heel) and have actually enjoyed taking this time to take care of me. My husband and teen son are fending for themselves in the kitchen while I tackle this new diet. Honestly, I am enjoying meal prepping for myself and I've noticed that I am not having any more of these symptoms, some of which I've had for so long that I didn't even realize they were actually symptoms: abdominal bloating, neck and shoulder pain, migraine, dizziness, irritability, fuzzy thinking, dull skin, puffy face & eyes, general malaise & feeling tired. I don't know if it's related, but I'm noticing less restless leg syndrome too. I will maintain this diet and follow the author's suggestions to the letter when it's time to reintroduce foods. For now, I'm more than satisfied with the results I'm getting and very happy to be on the right track. I am hopeful that many, many others will get relief as well.
If you want a very well designed and comprehensive guide to get yourself motivated and organized to start and stay on a migraine diet, this is the book for you. The author herself suffers from migraines and Meniere's so she has personally gone through the process of altering her own diet to help decrease the symptoms of these health problems. She walks you through a week by week plan that goes gently into this new way of eating and altering your life style. You don't have to go cold turkey unless you want to. There is even a Facebook group for this book where the author answers questions and posts videos of information and recipes. I have been on the diet for 2 months now and have seen a decrease in the symptoms of vestibular migraines for myself. I plan to stay on the diet for the full 6 months recommended by the book before I follow the book's plan to reintroduce foods. This isn't just a list of foods you can't eat. There are lists of foods you can eat as well as neat recipes that use those foods. I'm really thankful I bought this book. I showed it to my doctor and he liked it well enough to write down the title, author, etc. to be able to recommend it to other patients.UPDATE: It has now been a little over one year since i bought this book and started to follow the plan/diet. I have mostly stayed within the baseline of the diet all this time because i believe that the healthy guidelines i've learned from this book have helped to lessen the chronic vestibular migraine symptoms i've had. I am so thankful i found this book on Amazon when i was looking for more information on migraine diets than the 2 page handout i was given by a doctor. This book and the support i've received in the companion Facebook group (group's name is the title of the book) from the author herself and other members have helped me a great deal.
I have suffered from migraines on and off for 30+ years - and no doctor ever suggested that I might be able to control them or lessen their frequency by changing what I eat. Thank goodness for this book! I cannot wait to go through Stephanie Weaver's eight-week transition and see whether it will have an effect on my headaches. I feel terrible that Weaver had to suffer so much before figuring all this out, but grateful that she took the time and made the effort to do so. All the recipes look delicious and I look forward to figuring out what my triggers are so I can avoid them!
One of my primary reasons for purchasing this book was to find recipes that are free of migraine triggers. I had high hopes based on other reviews, but many of the recipes have common migraine triggers such as tomato, citrus, dairy, etc.As for the 8-week plan, I think this book could be good for someone who has not done any food elimination and is just starting the process (the only reason I'm giving it 3 stars); through the process of trial and error, I've already gone through those steps.Overall, this book was really not very helpful for me.
This book has changed my life. I have chronic migraine and was faced with taking rescue medicine that made me feel horrible, or going on preventative medication that came with a huge list of side effects. I decided to give this plan a try this summer before returning to my headache specialist to discuss my progress and how to proceed. Reading through the book the first night brought me to tears. I’ve read countless migraine books but never from someone who wrote with such understanding and supportiveness. The book outlines how to transition into the diet so you don’t feel deprived and are more likely to stick with it. I’m now 15 weeks into eating this way (and adding other lifestyle supports the book recommends, including regular sleep, relaxation, and vitamins that were approved by my specialist) and my migraines have drastically reduced both in frequency and intensity. I have had entire weeks of zero pain, something I hadn’t experienced in years, and I know I am continuing to improve. Please give this book a shot, it might just give you your life back.
As a migraine sufferer for nearly 50 years, I was interested to see a book that recommended something other than more drugs to relieve these severe headaches. I have been following Ms. Weaver’s plan for five months, and the results are amazing! I have gone from 8-10 migraines per month down to one or two. I have made many of the recipes that are included, and they are all very good. Great book; I highly recommend it!
